It's a cloudy kind of morning with some rain expected later on - would be nice if it could hold off during the day. We might also need to contend with windy (southerly) conditions, but the ski areas appear to be planning on opening as normal. Higher webcams show some limited visibility. It is always a bit sad to see 'dirty snow' (see the Hanazono image below). I like to try and think of it as some chocolate sprinklings on top of a lovely cup of coffee. Not as yummy, probably. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 1088cm Posted on Saturday 4th April 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . April is coming in strong today, with high winds from the south and rain likely later in the day (it actually arrived while I was working through this long-winded report). The wind in particular really strips the snow off the ground; there’s visibly less here at Akakan base than yesterday, so we can expect to also see more bare spots up on the mountain. It’s been a strange season. Most people figure we got about half the snow of the previous year. Granted, 2024-2025 was a heavy year, but not that unusual looking back over a longer time period. We had two low years, a good season last year, and another low one this year. Yes, we are concerned about what these trends show. We really only had one serious snow, when we got over a meter on January 26. I think that’s what then gave us some problems with full-depth avalanches later on, like the one that occurred on February 28th at Madarao. That was especially unusual because there were none of the usual signs with　a heavy wet slab, with cracking and gliding normally occurring before the avalanche releases. I know the areas really keep an eye on this, which doesn’t help the four people who were injured, but that was a strange one. Lotte Arai has been affected by this, too, and have been keeping a lot of slopes closed just in case. Despite the low snow, though, this was a year where locals really felt a bit overwhelmed by visitors—and newcomers, in some cases. There basically were almost no Japanese faces to be seen at night in Akakura. The local supermarkets were clogged with big groups now of east Asians, as more stay-and-cook-for-yourself group accommodations have sprung up (no offense to them, as there are lots of individual international shoppers; the Taiwanese just tend to come in big groups and work through shopping together, which blocks the already-hassled locals. We try to be friendly, you know....). One of the local, long-established ski schools also commented that they had almost no Japanese lessons this year, too. That’s concerning, along with information coming out on the new development at Suginohara. A local leader interviewed on NHK, the national broadcaster, basically said that the current main parking lot would be used for the new luxury hotel, which will be priced in the hundreds of thousands of yen (thousands of dollars) per room per night, and that the concept is that day visitors/riders (meaning domestic) wouldn’t be needed. He wasn’t speaking for the developers, but we haven’t heard much directly from the people who are doing the development, only rumors of ¥12,000 lift tickets and the desire to move on to condominium development. Insert big sigh here. It just seems out of place with what Myoko is—I mean, we’re in the heart of a national park, it’s always been a very local place with a deep history and culture. But we keep seeing older friends move out, when their children aren’t interested in the family hotel or restaurant and people are waiving money at them to sell out. Can’t blame them. OK, before we get too depressed here, everything changes once April comes around. The hordes of young Australian ski instructors are gone. The supermarkets are once again accessible. 7-11 is once again a place where you can talk to the clerks (because you, like them, live here and know each other). Our flagship resort, Akakura Kanko Hotel, will be busy year-round because it has the golf course and the ski area, but more than that it has a tradition (it’s been here since 1937, after all) and a style and it’s a key part of the community. I just wonder about the long-term feasibility of a super-luxury hotel catering to non-Japanese who will be here about three months a year. I have been here long enough to have seen the end of the Japanese ski bubble, with its packed slopes and busy hotels (on weekends). We all also see the abandoned hotels left over when that bubble burst, as bubbles always do. It’s kind of an uncertain world out there right now, too. Summer is great. It’s cooler up here than in the lowlands around us, there’s both lots to do if you want and plenty of just relaxation if you like it. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . Hello Skiers & Boarders, Yesterday was icky and gray, but today is a beautiful sunny day, blue skies with white puffy clouds for decoration. Biggest news is that Lift C, aka Prince Romance, aka the double chair at the base of the Furano Zone has closed for the season due to snow melt. This is the normal pathway here, as spring operations are moved to the higher lifts. About one more month of skiing available, weather permitting. Pretty breezy today, so you won't get overheated. Sunday at 1:00 PM is the annual pond skimming event. Always lots of fun to see people dunked into freezing water. As I write this at 8:20am it is actually snowing as it if's mid-winter again. A nice surprise. Maybe/probably the last of the season. I woke up early and had my early morning walk and it was really lovely out there. Too early for specific updates from the ski areas, so the list below remains as it was yesterday. The sun is out and it feels calm. I'm going to get myself up on the mountain this morning. The following lifts are now closed: Hirafu: Ace Number 3 pair, Ace Number 4 pair Village: Morino Chair Annupuri: Jumbo Number 2 pair, Jumbo Number 3 pair A look back at the season so far: until the end of March 2026 Another month has passed and here we are in April already. Just where did all the time go? Here are my observed snowfall numbers for March 2025: March 2026: 50cm March 2025: 76cm March 2024: 70cm March 2023: 32cm March 2022: 81cm March 2021: 79cm March 2020: 59cm March 2019: 45cm March 2018: 49cm March 2017: 83cm March 2016: 109cm March 2015: 139cm March 2014: 113cm March 2013: 164cm I was able to report snowfall at base on 13 days in March, mostly coming in the first half of the month, with a total of 50cm for the month. Looking at records since 2013, 50cm is on the lower end of the scale. I probably say this every year, but look at that 164cm in March 2013! That’s more than we got this year in February. How I’d love to see that kind of March again, but it feels increasingly… muzukashii! And here is how much snowfall I have recorded during previous seasons in April. April 2025: 1cm April 2024: 5cm April 2023: 0cm April 2022: 2cm April 2021: 9cm April 2020: 10cm April 2019: 6cm April 2018: 13cm April 2017: 0cm April 2016: 6cm April 2015: 3cm April 2014: 13cm April 2013: 32cm I doubt I’ll get to add any more this season. We are now approaching the end of the season. Niseko Moiwa plans to be open until 5th April. Hanazono and Village plan to continue until 12th April, with Hirafu and Annupuri hoping to be open until 6th May. It remains to be seen if they will be able to do that. Interestingly, the official snow depth on the mountain at Hirafu today (well, yesterday actually: 325cm) is actually higher than 1st April last year (285cm). I found that rather surprising. So maybe they can. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It’s quiet today after a really blustery Tuesday. Crazy strong winds and lashes of rain, then some deep blue skies and sun, and then more rain and wind. I heard that the wind was so strong that it blew over several vendor’s carts at Takada Park in nearby Joetsu City. They were there awaiting the blooming of the thousands of cherry trees on this old castle ground. Luckily the trees weren’t yet in bloom, or that wind would have ended the floral fun pretty quickly.... Akakan continues to have most of its lifts going; I’m amazed that they still have the base-level Hotel No. 1 still going; we could almost see the snow melting in that wind yesterday. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Good morning from Shiga Kogen. It's a wet and windy morning. Not pleasant! Today is the last day of March and so the last day of the season for 10 of the ski areas making up Shiga Kogen. The weather might prevent some of them from enjoying their last day... best to check with them to make sure of status this morning. Forecasts are showing the potential for some snow later tomorrow, believe it or not, as temps get a bit lower again. We're having some very changeable weather conditions at the moment as we transition into spring. Clearer skies are due again come Friday. --------------------- Ski area planned closing dates Below are the planned closing dates of ski areas in Shiga Kogen. Please note that in the late season, ski areas often scale back operations and/or may be closed on weekdays or on certain days. More details will be added once we get into April.
