The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It feels like it is going to be a lovely sunny day here. There is some cloud early on but already lots of blue sky and sunshine and I imagine more as the morning goes on. Another 11cm of snowfall to report since yesterday morning with light snow falling for lots of the day yesterday. It is another cold start to the day, so first tracks should be really great this morning. (I really wish I could be out there this morning!) This report is a bit early, so some of the snow depth numbers have not been updated for the day, because the updated info is not yet available. The snow clouds are forecast to be back tomorrow with snow likely during the day. Looking ahead a little further along it looks like we are going to have another relatively warm spell early next week... ----- The Tokamachi Yuki Matsuri (Snow Festival) is being held this weekend over in Tokamachi city, which is about 45 minutes drive from Yuzawa. It is one of the largest in the region. Unfortunately, when we had that warmer spell recently there was some melt going on and an accident due to a stage becoming unstable and for that reason they have cancelled the Carnival event. All of the other events are still going ahead though including lots of snow sculptures around the central area which are always worth a look. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Just after I posted the report yesterday, it got rather cloudy. And then it started clearing up again by mid morning and it ended up being a fine day, though never totally clear. As I was driving down route 17 in mid afternoon the temperature panel said +3C. I had a really good few hours yesterday morning; the snow was in really good condition. This morning it is cloudy and I can't see much of the mountains and there's some light snow falling and a slight dusting on the top of the car; a few cm in places. It is noticeably not as cold this morning as it has been in recent mornings, though if the forecasts are correct the temp shouldn't be rising much during the day. (Early in the coming week, we can expect warmer conditions...) Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 5cm of fresh snow with Kagura reporting 1cm. The latter are also saying that they expect some stronger winds later on. So, light snow forecast for the day into tomorrow morning. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Light snow through the day yesterday and there wasn't so much in terms of cm on the ground but this morning we just cleared away 17cm which was good to see. It is still snowing now and light snow is forecast for the day, with a chance it might stop sometime before late afternoon. Kagura are reporting about 25cm and Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 15-20cm of fresh snowfall. (Just to explain once again; the reason why we mention the fresh snowfall being reported by those two ski resorts is simply because they put those numbers out in a morning. And good on them, I say. If other ski resorts put those numbers out into the world, we'd mention them too!) Sunshine is currently forecast for tomorrow and as we approach mid week some warmer conditions are likely. Temps may even get into double digits around Tuesday and Wednesday which won't be great for the snow. Yesterday light snow continued for most of the morning with some sunshine in the afternoon and then a return to snow later on, so some mixed conditions. There has just been a little snow down at town with perhaps more higher up. It was pretty busy at the popular resorts yesterday so any additional fresh was being tracked pretty quickly. This morning starts off with some cloud and blue sky over Yuzawa and we are forecast some fine weather with a high of around 6C in town later in the afternoon. It's still looking like we are going to be having a relatively mild week and there's currently some rain on the forecast for Wednesday. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. A dry spell. Beautiful blue skies above Yuzawa yesterday and mild too up to around 8C in town. It felt very spring-like. This morning it is noticeably more chilly at around 1C and it shouldn't be warming up too much beyond that. Cloudy at the start of the day but there's actually some very (very) light snow starting to fall in higher places. Light snow is on the forecast for later on, we shouldn't expect much. But can always hope to be wrong! Tomorrow the sun should be out and will be a little warmer once again. Not too much please! The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. Not been able to report any new cm for a while now... Yesterday there was a bit of snowfall up in higher areas in the morning and Kagura this morning are reporting 1cm of fresh snow. Down in town areas it was up to around 6C in the afternoon and mostly just cloudy. There were a few spots of rain at times, but happily not much at all. This morning it is mostly cloudy, quite bright with some blue sky. Overnight tonight there is a chance of some light snow / light rain, it doesn't look like it will be particularly cold so it might be borderline. Tomorrow we should get to see some sunshine in the daytime. Temperatures around 5-6C during the day both today and tomorrow. --- The Echigo Yuzawa Onsen Yuki Matsuri (Snow Festival) will be held in the central area of town on Saturday (2nd March). There will be things going on between the West Exit of Echigo Yuzawa Station and Yuzawa Kogen Ropeway, with events being held from 6pm until 9pm on the Nunoba area of Yuzawa Kogen resort (close to the Ropeway base station). The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Very happy news to report this morning - for the first time in quite a while, there's fresh snow on the ground! Yesterday was actually kind of disappointing down at town level. It was trying to snow later on but it didn't really manage to get going and it remained wet. But higher up Kagura resort were reporting 5cm of fresh snow early yesterday morning and then an additional 10cm during the day, so that's 15cm up there by the end of the day. (At the start of the day Maiko were reporting 2cm). And this morning we have snow right down to town level. Woohoo! It's great to see a layer of snow on the ground again, and the way it was falling when I got up it felt like mid winter again. I am measuring 15cm of fresh snow here in town as of 7:45am and with snow coming down now I definitely be adding to that in the report tomorrow. Depending on where you are, there's between around 10-20cm of so of fresh snow around base areas this morning. It is still snowing but the snow is due to ease off and we might even see some breaks in the clouds later on in the day. Higher up, Kagura are reporting an impressive 30cm this morning. If that is in addition to what they reported yesterday, I make that up to 45cm. Nice. (They are also saying the top Number 2 lift won't be opening due to wind conditions). It will be interesting to see if they change their official snow depth numbers, though that is hardly important! Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 20cm of fresh snow at base and 30cm on upper areas this morning. This fresh snow is all in time for the weekend too. I expect it will get a few more people out as there is a chance that this snow may well be the last that we get, on lower slopes anyway. I know I'm going to make the most of it... just need to decide where to go! Just love snow. Clear skies, sunshine and (unfortunately) warmth - perhaps as warm as 10C in town - is forecast for tomorrow. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It feels very different this morning after that mini-blast of winter yesterday. Yesterday snow continued falling after my report - that is the 4cm snow that is added to my report today - though it eased off by late morning. There was some blue sky and a bit of sun at times, but the day ended up mostly just cloudy. I found myself over at Maiko Snow Resort and I must admit that with them reporting 30cm I was expecting the snow up there to be softer than it was on the courses. By the sides of the courses was nice but the courses were pretty hard. But anyway, good work out for the legs and that layer of snow is most definitely better being there than if it wasn't there. It didn't feel warm but by the end of the day the snow that had been sitting on top of a stationary car near by place had almost gone... Anyway, this morning the sun is out and it is a really beautiful morning. Totally clear blue skies. It is cold early on too, a few under zero, but forecast to warm up to around +10C later on today. I would expect morning snow conditions to be nice before the sun gets hold of it. Tomorrow should be similarly warm (if not a little warmer) with rain forecast for the night. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It was colder yesterday and bits of rain at times during the day. But the excellent news this morning is the 20cm or so fresh snow on the ground around town areas. Brilliant. We have measured 17cm, 19cm and 22cm in different places - 19cm at the usual point. Kagura resort are reporting 30cm of fresh snow. And what's more, the sun is out just to the north of Yuzawa - it may well end up being just a short period of sunshine and might not stretch down to Yuzawa, but there is a chance we will enjoy a sunny day. Or maybe not! Sun or not, there's a decent layer of fresh snow to enjoy this morning. Apparently the top Number 5 lift at Kagura will be closed today due to windy conditions up there. It does feel a bit windy out there actually so might need to keep an eye on that - I cannot find any info of other lifts being closed just at the moment. Light snow continued after my report was posted but it didn't really result in much more on the ground (the 1cm in the report today is from yesterday morning). Great to see that snow though and with the clearer conditions later in the day I am sure people enjoyed it. Even with the rather blowy wind. This morning there are clear blue skies all around - it's a beautiful morning. Quite cold too but likely to warm up to around 7-8C in town later in the afternoon. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Well how about this then!? This morning Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 10-20cm of fresh snow on their slopes. Kagura are reporting 15cm. We have just measured between 5-9cm in different areas around town level, with our trusted spot showing 7cm. That is a very nice late March surprise. It is just snowing very lightly right now and should be easing off sometime this morning. Quite cold and hanging around zero for now, won't warm up much. Tomorrow - back to sunshine and milder conditions with a high of around 10C in the afternoon. --- Today is the last day of the season for the Muikamachi Hakkaisan resort. Two small ski hills to the north of Yuzawa (Hakkai Sanroku and Itsukamachi) have already closed. The planned closing dates for all of the ski resorts in the Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma region have been updated below. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday was a real surprise - especially as snow was falling pretty much through the day, so there will have been more cm added on the slopes. I measured an additional 4cm of snowfall since the morning. It felt very much like winter once again and while I didn't get out skiing or snowboarding myself I heard some good reports from people who did. It's always good to have a 'bonus' like that in the late stages of the season. This morning it's all change again with clear skies over Yuzawa (some cloud to the north in Minamiuonuma) and early morning sunshine. It's a chilly start. A bit windy too, but hopefully not enough to affect lift operations. I suggest checking as opening time approaches (sorry, we need to get the report posted early this morning so don't have any further info available to share at the time of this report). While it is a cold start to the morning, milder temps are due today and tomorrow (up to around 10C in town) with lots of sunshine forecast. It should be a good few days... and with the prospect of some further snow later in the week too! --- Muikamachi Hakkaisan closed at the end of yesterday. Interesting how that one always seems to close sooner than it needs to. They were still reporting over 2m or so of snow depth. The Southern Area of the GALA Yuzawa resort is also now closed for the season - but the main Central and Northern Areas of GALA Yuzawa remain open as normal, and likely will be until early May. --- Ski resorts in Yuzawa: GALA Yuzawa - 240cm (official snow depth) - The Southern Area of the resort is now closed.
