Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 12cm Snowfall at base this season 87cm Posted on Tuesday 18th December 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It was raining last night but I'm glad to report that this morning it is snowing again with Kagura resort reporting 20cm of fresh snowfall and Maiko Snow Resort reporting 10cm of fresh. I am measuring 12cm to add to these reports and it is continuing to snow now. The more the better as it seems we can expect temps to remain on the mild side with the chance of rain looming on the forecasts over the coming days. Just keep cold please! We'll see what happens but for the moment let's just hope for some more decent snowfall over the next 24 hours. ----- Updated: 8:30am, Tuesday 18th December 2018 ** Official snow depths (where available) and resort specific information. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 89cm Posted on Wednesday 19th December 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Just a slight bit of snow overnight (after some rain, so rather wet), with Kagura reporting 3cm of fresh snowfall and Maiko reporting 10cm (presumably higher up). And as the morning has progressed, the clouds have been clearing and right now there is a lot of blue sky and sunshine over Yuzawa. A high of around 6C is expected. It's a lovely morning. As much as we would prefer the snow clouds to be over us and delivering! We are still looking at warmer conditions late week into the weekend and really hoping to avoid rain and get snow instead. (Obviously). We can just hope temps remain on the lower side of the forecasts. Thanks to that blast of winter last week, it's feeling like we are not quite there yet once again. Ski resorts that planned to be open by now are mostly part open, though - apart from Kagura - it is limited openings as we wait for more snow to get things deep. NASPA Ski Garden and Ishiuchi Maruyama (with the unveiling of their impressive new gear) plan to open from Friday. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 91cm Posted on Tuesday 25th December 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa and Happy Christmas! It is of course Christmas morning and the sun is out. Early on, the mountains are looking beautiful and there is a ice-frosted look to the trees outside my place. We had a bit of snow falling yesterday and while it didn't amount to much down at town level, there has been some fresh on the mountains... more to be found the higher up you go. The only reports of fresh snow that I can find early on this morning is 5cm reported by Ishiuchi Maruyama. We are set for a fine day today, perhaps clouding over later on and with a high of around +4C. Feels a bit windy. On to that forecast - and it is still looking very snowy indeed with snow lined up daily from late tomorrow into New Year. We could be in for some major snowfall which is exactly what we want. Really looking forward to that. Big numbers please. Don't let us down, Nature! - Yuzawa Now: Friday 28th December 2018
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 47cm Snowfall at base this season 138cm Posted on Friday 28th December 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. [** Updated at 9:30am ** ] As I posted earlier on this morning in a quick report - this is much, much, much better! The snow has arrived. Close on 50cm of fresh snow on the ground and probably more on the mountain. Kagura are reporting 50cm of fresh. Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 'more than 50cm'. Ishiuchi Maruyama are also reporting 40-50cm. Loads of snow. And it is still snowing. It feels like 'Snow Country' again. With this sudden heavy snowfall there are a few interesting things going on. The Tashiro area of Kagura is closed this morning due to the weather conditions - Kagura is open up to the Kagura Number 1 lift. Some other areas are opening up courses, but some that were open are actually closed as the resorts get to grip with all of the new snow - for example, Iwappara early on has the top area closed. But Maiko Snow Resort is pretty much full open now apart from one lift. And access to Ishiuchi Maruyama is now ok from all three base areas. Expect things to settle down pretty quickly though and I'd expect more to be open tomorrow. This snowfall is due to continue for at least a few more days so it is going to build up from here. Brilliant. It's what we have been waiting for and it will really transform conditions. So just to re-cap. All of the ski hills in the area - Yuzawa town and neighbouring Minamiuonuma - are now at least part open. The only exception now is (the legendary) Mt Granview, which plans to be open from tomorrow morning. If you are planning on coming to Yuzawa over the next few days, get wrapped up and ready to enjoy these full-on winter conditions. Roads are being cleared but there may be delays and extra care is needed. Enjoy! :) ----- GALA Yuzawa - 100cm (official snow depth) * The Central and Northern Areas of GALA Yuzawa are open * The Gondola, Coach pair, Barouche quad, Sociable quad, Phaeton pair, Victoria quad and Tilbury triple lifts are operating * The Melody, Entertainment, Gigi and Grenoble courses in the Central Area are open; the ‘Snow Enjoyment Park’ is also open * The Broadway, Roman Holiday and part of Swan courses in the Northern Area are open Iwappara - 70cm (official snow depth) * 3 lifts and 5 courses in the central to upper area are open Kagura - Kagura area: 160cm (official snow depth) - Mitsumata area: 120cm (official snow depth) - Tashiro area: 140cm (official snow depth) * All areas and almost all lifts and courses across Kagura are now open * Downhill course back to Mitsumata Ropeway not open yet * The top Kagura Number 5 romance lift should be open from 1st January 2019 Kandatsu Kogen - 85cm (official snow depth) * The Tozawa base pair, Onaka and Musawa quad lifts are operating Naeba - 60cm (base) * Please see our Naeba Now report for daily updates from Naeba NASPA Ski Garden - 85cm (official snow depth) * All lifts are operating * All main courses apart from D and E are open Yuzawa Kogen - Top: 80cm (official snow depth) - Base: 50cm (official snow depth) * Yuzawa Kogen is part open * All of the top Kogen area is open * The lower Nunoba area is now open again Yuzawa Park - 70cm (official snow depth) * Yuzawa Park is part open * The Number 1, 3 and 7 lifts are operating Yuzawa Nakazato - 70cm * Yuzawa Nakazato is part open * The Number 1 high speed lift, Number 2, Number 3 and Number 4 pair lifts are operating * The Joyful course, Number 3 Romance course, Panorama course and Family course are open Yuzawa Now 2018-2019 season Data as of Friday 28th December 2018 Total snowfall at base so far 138cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 11 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 47cm (28th December) November 2018 snowfall 2cm reported on 1 day December 2018 snowfall 136cm reported on 10 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. - Yuzawa Now: Saturday 29th December 2018
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 50cm Snowfall at base this season 188cm Posted on Saturday 29th December 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. What a few days it has been. After the report yesterday we cleared our measuring area and by 5pm there was another 17cm on there. The snow eased off for a while some serious snow shovelling was enjoyed. The measuring spot was cleared again and this morning there is a further 33cm on there. So I make that a very pleasing total of 50cm snowfall since yesterday. 'The resorts that report' are not quite reporting so much as that - perhaps to not frighten people. (Actually, there's some evidence that such thinking actually exists, believe it or not). Kagura and Ishiuchi Maruyama are reporting 30cm; Maiko are reporting 40cm. They're all impressive numbers though. The quick transformation that I was wishing for up until a few days ago has happened with most resorts now at least part open, many of them mostly open and some of them fully open. We have tried to keep the resort-specific information below up to date and correct! And there are now some very nice snow conditions to enjoy. Wind is affecting Kagura again - the Tashiro area is closed again this morning and they plan to be open up until the Kaguran Number 1 romance (pair) lift - if conditions ease off they might get the quad moving. ----- The forecast still has snow continuing over the coming week with perhaps a break in the clouds early week. So it is going to continue building up. Nice. ----- Ski resorts in Yuzawa: GALA Yuzawa - 150cm (official snow depth) * The Central and Northern Areas of GALA Yuzawa are open * All lifts apart from Chariot, Landau Ropeway (to Yuzawa Kogen) and Waggonette are now normally operating * All of the Central Area is open including the ‘Snow Enjoyment Park’ * The Broadway, Swan and Roman Holiday courses in the Northern Area are open Iwappara - 120cm (official snow depth) * All areas now open * 9 lifts and 20 courses Kagura - Kagura area: 190cm (official snow depth) - Mitsumata area: 150cm (official snow depth) - Tashiro area: 170cm (official snow depth) * All areas and almost all lifts and courses across Kagura are now open * Downhill course back to Mitsumata Ropeway not open yet * The top Kagura Number 5 romance lift should be open from 1st January 2019 Kandatsu Kogen - 105cm (official snow depth) * All lifts are now normally operating Naeba - 60cm (base) * Please see our Naeba Now report for daily updates from Naeba NASPA Ski Garden - 140cm (official snow depth) * All lifts and courses are now (normally) open Yuzawa Kogen - Top: 100cm (official snow depth) - Base: 60cm (official snow depth) * All lifts and courses are now (normally) open Yuzawa Park - 80cm (official snow depth) * Yuzawa Park is part open * The Number 1, 2, 7, 8 and 9 lifts are operating Yuzawa Nakazato - 70cm * Yuzawa Nakazato is now mostly open ----- Ski resorts in Minamiuonuma - just to the north of Yuzawa: Ishiuchi Maruyama - 140cm (official snow depth) * All three of the base areas are now open and all lifts are scheduled to open today Joetsu Kokusai - 140cm * Joetsu Kokusai is now mostly open Maiko Snow Resort - Top: 150cm (official snow depth) Not updated - Base: 80cm (official snow depth) * All lifts apart from the Maiko Number 1 pair lift now operating * Most courses now open Muikamachi Hakkaisan - 150cm (official snow depth) Yuzawa Now 2018-2019 season Data as of Saturday 29th December 2018 Total snowfall at base so far 188cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 12 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 50cm (29th December) November 2018 snowfall 2cm reported on 1 day December 2018 snowfall 186cm reported on 11 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 39cm Snowfall at base this season 227cm Posted on Sunday 30th December 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. The snow has continued falling - pretty much consistently since my last report. By 5pm yesterday, I was wiping off 14cm of snow... and there is another 25cm of it this morning. So that's 39cm of fresh snowfall that I have measured since yesterday morning and my friend in a different location is reporting similar. After waiting for the proper snow to arrive - we will have got close to 1.5m of it fall over a period of just three days. What a way to end the year! And - it's still snowing, though perhaps easing off a bit during the day today. In ski resort news, Kagura is only part open again this morning - the Tashiro area closed and only part of the main Kagura area. Kagura and Maiko Snow Resort are both reporting 30cm of fresh snowfall; Ishiuchi Maruyama are reporting 30-35cm. Most ski resorts are now close to being fully open and there is certainly more than enough snow to enjoy great conditions now. - Yuzawa Now: Monday 31st December 2018
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 28cm Snowfall at base this season 255cm Posted on Monday 31st December 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. I might well have said this yesterday, so sorry if that is the case but - what an end to the year! This snow just doesn't seem to want to stop falling. It's like it was bursting to get started and the last four days has been a big long release. I measured another 6cm during the day yesterday and another 22cm overnight. That's at town level, of course. So 28cm to add to my reports - and a total of 164cm over the last 4 reports. Blimey! Resorts are reporting less than I am measuring: Kagura - 30cm Ishiuchi - 20cm Maiko - 20cm It's interesting. Once we get decent snowfall, you almost feel that ski resorts tend to 'under-report' actual snowfall. After all, they don't want to scare folk off do they. Lots of ski hills - especially those catering for families and the like - would actually now prefer the clouds to clear and have some sunshine over the next few days. That would be 'ideal' for the New Year period. Everyone concentrating just on snow though should be very happy with the current situation. Looks like Kagura is open as normal this morning so there should be some excellent untouched conditions to find up there. It is still snowing this morning but we are expecting less during the day today and there might be some sunshine tomorrow morning. We might even get some clearer conditions later on today. But don't worry, temperatures should remain low and there is more snow on the forecast from mid week. Have a fun New Years Eve. --- A message from SnowJapan If you didn’t already know, we are currently running a special ski lift ticket prize draw on SnowJapan. Full details can be found here, so please do go and take a look. We have already received many entries for the prize draw. Good luck to everyone who has entered. Lots of you have very kindly taken the chance to send us comments and thoughts about our website. We don’t often get to hear this kind of feedback, so it really is fantastic to read so many supportive comments and good ideas. We really do appreciate it. Thank you. One thing that comes across is how much our website means to so many people out there. We can of course always see the large website traffic statistics, but in the end, they are just numbers. Comments and words of encouragement from real people make it all that much more... real. At times the volume of things that need to be done can get to feel somewhat overwhelming, so it is nice to hear the support. Hopefully, one thing that comes across to people who know our site is the love, care and enthusiasm that we put into it. We are going to keep on (stubbornly!) doing what we are doing, always trying to improve and move forward. Many of you have asked how you can help support us. The easiest way to help is to simply spread the word about the site - just let other people know about SnowJapan.com. Whether it’s a post on social media, a link on your website, in conversation or whatever. And please don’t forget to mention SnowJapan if you contact any of the accommodations or other businesses that you find on our site. It all goes towards helping us. Thank you again. - Yuzawa Now: Tuesday 1st January 2019
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 19cm Snowfall at base this season 274cm Posted on Tuesday 1st January 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Happy New Year After that extremely snowy last week of 2018, we start 2019 with some clear skies and sunshine. It is a lovely morning. It's not expected to last too long though with snow forecast for later on. This morning I cleared 14cm of snow off the measuring point and there was 5cm on it yesterday, so that's 19cm that I have measured myself to add to the reports this morning. Curiously, Kagura are reporting just 5cm - Ishiuchi Maruyama are reporting 10cm and Maiko are saying 20cm. So we are start the new year in excellent shape and should now be set for the season. What we want now - ideally - is lots of days like this morning with regular snowfall during the night time. Onegai shimasu! No doubt the story of the season won't pan out exactly like that, but it will certainly be interesting to see what happens next and how the season unfolds. For now, let's try to enjoy what we have been blessed with as much as we can. Popular places will likely be rather busy today; maybe things will take a while to get going with a few sore heads. But if you get out early this morning you'll be rewarded with a beautiful morning. The photos today are from GALA Yuzawa, Yuzawa Kogen and Maiko Snow Resort. --- 10:30am update Beautiful morning here! With most areas now open we have made a few changes to the resort specific information below to try and simplify things. We will continue to check and update each ski resort information for every report, and make a note of anything we feel is of interest. We have also added information about 'nighta' operations at ski resorts in Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma. That is at the bottom of the report and we'll keep it there in every report. --- Ski resorts in Yuzawa: GALA Yuzawa - 220cm (official snow depth) * The Central and Northern Areas of GALA Yuzawa are open. * All of the Central Area is open including the ‘Snow Enjoyment Park’. * The Broadway, Swan, Roman Holiday and Super Broadway courses in the Northern Area are open * Part of the downhill Falcon course is open Iwappara - 165cm (official snow depth) Kagura - Kagura area: 250cm (official snow depth) - Mitsumata area: 210cm (official snow depth) - Tashiro area: 230cm (official snow depth) * The top Kagura Number 5 romance lift is open from today Kandatsu Kogen - 155cm (official snow depth) Naeba - Please see our Naeba Now report for daily updates from Naeba NASPA Ski Garden - 230cm (official snow depth) Yuzawa Kogen - Top: 190cm (official snow depth) - Base: 130cm (official snow depth) Yuzawa Park - 160cm (official snow depth) Yuzawa Nakazato - 140cm (official snow depth) ----- Ski resorts in Minamiuonuma - just to the north of Yuzawa: Ishiuchi Maruyama - 200cm (official snow depth) Joetsu Kokusai - 180cm (official snow depth) Maiko Snow Resort - Top: 190cm (official snow depth) - Base: 130cm (official snow depth) Muikamachi Hakkaisan - 180cm (official snow depth) Yuzawa Now 2018-2019 season Data as of Tuesday 1st January 2019 Total snowfall at base so far 274cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 15 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 50cm (29th December) November 2018 snowfall 2cm reported on 1 day December 2018 snowfall 253cm reported on 13 days January 2019 snowfall 19cm reported on 1 day Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 9cm Snowfall at base this season 283cm Posted on Wednesday 2nd January 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday morning was a beauty. And from a quick look round the ski hills around town, things didn't look too busy - at least early on anyway. Perhaps some people needed a bit of a lie-in! Clouds were starting to gather by the afternoon and then snow falling after it got dark. I am measuring 9cm of fresh snowfall on the ground and resorts are reporting the following amounts: Kagura: 15cm Maiko Snow Resort: 10-20cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 5cm So there is a nice fresh layer to enjoy this morning and light snowfall is forecast on and off through today and tomorrow. Friday may be 'back to work' day for lots of people, but it looks like people who can still be here might enjoy some sunny conditions. ----- Ski resorts in Yuzawa: GALA Yuzawa - 210cm (official snow depth) * The Central and Northern Areas of GALA Yuzawa are open. * All of the Central Area is open including the ‘Snow Enjoyment Park’. * The Broadway, Swan, Roman Holiday and Super Broadway courses in the Northern Area are open * Part of the downhill Falcon course is open Iwappara - 150cm (official snow depth) Kagura - Kagura area: 250cm (official snow depth) - Mitsumata area: 210cm (official snow depth) - Tashiro area: 230cm (official snow depth) * The top Kagura Number 5 romance lift is now open Kandatsu Kogen - 155cm (official snow depth) Naeba - Please see our Naeba Now report for daily updates from Naeba NASPA Ski Garden - 220cm (official snow depth) Yuzawa Kogen - Top: 200cm (official snow depth) - Base: 140cm (official snow depth) Yuzawa Park - 150cm (official snow depth) Yuzawa Nakazato - 140cm (official snow depth) ----- Ski resorts in Minamiuonuma - just to the north of Yuzawa: Ishiuchi Maruyama - 190cm (official snow depth) Joetsu Kokusai - 180cm (official snow depth) Maiko Snow Resort - Top: 210cm (official snow depth) - Base: 140cm (official snow depth) Muikamachi Hakkaisan - 180cm (official snow depth) ----- Night time 'nighta' operations (listed in alphabetical order) Below is information on night time floodlit skiing operations at ski resorts in the area. - Yuzawa Now: Thursday 3rd January 2019
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 37cm Snowfall at base this season 320cm Posted on Thursday 3rd January 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Excellent news again this morning. It was snowing during the day yesterday, though not as intensively as last week. I cleared off 5cm of snow since the morning. But this morning I have just measured another 32cm. That's a total of 37cm since my report yesterday. I tend to think that the ski resorts are being a bit shy with the new snowfall numbers that they report now that we have a lot, but for the record here they are: Maiko Snow Resort: 30-40cm Kagura: about 30cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 20cm People like probably most of you reading this report mostly want there to always be large snowfall numbers. Deep is good, ne! For the ski resorts though, if there's too much news about relentless heavy snowfall they sometimes feel that it puts some people off coming. Understandable, I suppose. Personally I get rather excited by the big numbers. So yes it's really great to see so much snow falling again. And I would recommend keeping an eye on tomorrow too as we might get to enjoy some clearer sunny skies. With many people now returning to their normal lives after the New Year period, the slopes shouldn't be too busy either. So tomorrow should be an excellent day on the mountains with great conditions wherever you choose to slide. GALA Yuzawa were hoping to open their Southern Area today but have delayed that... not due to a lack of snow, rather due to the large amounts of snow. The better problem of the two extremes I suppose, but they will want to get that area open as quickly as possible. Some fine snow conditions usually can be found there so keep an eye on that. The 'Yuzawa Snow Link' (interesting new name for the connecting Yuzawa Kogen <> GALA Yuzawa <> Ishiuchi Maruyama resorts) joint lift ticket is now available. With the Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa not yet open, the Ropeway that connects GALA Yuzawa with Yuzawa Kogen is of course not operating yet. You can get from GALA Yuzawa to Ishiuchi Maruyama via the top ski lift. A shuttle bus between the respective bases is operating if you want to get between them. - Yuzawa Now: Friday 4th January 2019
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 10cm Snowfall at base this season 330cm Posted on Friday 4th January 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday the snow kept on coming down. At times it was quite heavy with nice big flakes; at other times just light snow. 7cm of fresh snowfall was measured yesterday evening and an additional 3cm this morning, so that makes for a total of 10cm of fresh snowfall down at town level since my report yesterday. (Both Kagura and Ishiuchi are this morning reporting 5cm of fresh snow). Right now it is generally cloudy but there seems to be a chance of clearer weather and sun a bit later on during the day. We should be seeing a return to more snowfall tomorrow, though it is going to be somewhat milder than it has been. Some of the local forecasts even call for 'sleet' in town - hopefully we will avoid that, and surely it will be snow at higher elevations. I wonder how busy the slopes will be today? Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 23cm Snowfall at base this season 353cm Posted on Sunday 6th January 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It was raining heavily at times yesterday around base levels. A bit grim. Yuck. Not helpful to the snow. So it was definitely a good idea to head up to higher elevations yesterday where it was more like snow (bit wet though). As it got dark light snow was falling down here and this morning we have a very welcome surprise -- I have just measured 23cm of fresh snow. Can't say I was expecting that, but thank you all the same! Kagura are reporting about 30cm and Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 20-30cm. So you can likely expect a fresh layer of around 20-30cm wherever you choose today (pre-grooming of course). Regular snowfall on and off is on the forecast for the coming week. Look to later on Tuesday/Wednesday for the chance of a really decent delivery. Today should see the last of the New Year holidaymakers (well, Japanese ones anyway!) returning back to their normal lives and we'll get back into normal weekdays from tomorrow. ----- All ski resorts in the area are open (either fully open or close to fully open).
