On this last day of the new year holidays for most people, it is snowing lightly with limited visibility out on the mountain and a wind blowing it around. We are experiencing a gradual increase in snow, though still less than hoped for. The ski resort this morning is saying that 80-90% of the slopes are open. Forecasts indicate the gradual snowfall to continue over the coming week. Would be great if we got some periods of heavy snow. Photos added at 9:45am. It's one of those 'pre-open' things and, for now, planned just for today and tomorrow, with the proper opening due next weekend. The Chuo Number 1 and 2 lifts, Mikaeri lift and Onsen Number 1 lifts are scheduled to be open to celebrate. Looks like we are on for some major lift disruption at the start of the day - including none of the lifts at Hanazono lined up to open on time. One forecast tells me to expect some 'heavy snow' tonight. I'm really curious about that. That seems unlikely, but I will be sure to let you know how that turns out tomorrow morning. It was a blizzard yesterday, which means the upper lifts were closed, which means all that snow was just waiting for you this morning. I estimate up to 30+ cm up on top, although nearly nothing accumulated at the base. It's bright, blue and sunny, with a bit of haze. High temps will be up to about +8 C today, so perfect, perfect spring skiing conditions. Today is the last day of operation for the Kitanomine side of the resort for this season. From tomorrow until the end of Golden Week (around May 6) you can ski/ride on the Furano side. Tickets are also a bit lower starting tomorrow. Note that night skiing has finished for the year. Enjoy. The threatened heat wave for the weekend has been toned down a little, with now only 2 days above freezing, and down to 9 C instead of 11 C on Saturday. At least that's single digits. Kitanomine is set to open on Monday, Dec 22. BUT, but, but....they sure are doing quite a bit of grooming today. Could it be they open for the weekend? That would be awesome. Monday was weird anyways. Who the heck opens on a Monday??? It's like you're trying to make people NOT come. Anyways, we can keep our fingers crossed that the resort will choose to open on Saturday. Downtown is in pure winter maze mode, much earlier than usual. I'm taking that as a positive sign that it will be a killer season! Only 8 more shopping days until Christmas. Think snow. Think cold. Hello Skiers & Boarders, VERY windy today in Furano, so while the resort initially only opened Lift C down low near the New Prince, that only lasted an hour and they closed that as well. Very, very rare. Got some nice snow yesterday afternoon. With everything blowing around, it's hard to say how much actually fell, but I measured what was there, and there you go. Bad news coming for the weekend...temps are forecast to soar up to +9 C on Saturday and +11 C on Sunday along with some r@!n for good measure. No typo there folks. Just astoundingly bad. Only 10 more shopping days until Christmas. Yesterday the lovely green grass slopes of Kitanomine was a thing, and today they are completely covered in 8 cm of proper whiteness. Yeah! AND, the weather report is showing the little snowman every day for the next several days. This is all good. BUT, here at Furano Now, we don't pull any punches, so I am obligated to mention that warm temps are coming Fri-Sun, with forecasted temps of +5, +7, and +4. This is not good. We'll have to see what that does. Anyway, the resort is reporting 15 cm of new stuff on top. Think snow. --- Ropeway + Lift D (aka Furano Downhill Romance No. 2). The latest Furano Now report can be found here . Happy Golden Week Skiers & Boarders, Yes, Furano is still open and will operate thru May 6, the official end of Golden Week. If you want to get your Spring Skiing on, Furano is one of the places you can do it in Hokkaido. It's been a relatively cool spring so the snow pack is in pretty good condition. If you've never been skiing in late spring, you're missing out. Absolutely NO people, cheap tickets, totally mellow atmosphere, and much warmer than the middle of winter. Spring snow is also great, allowing you to try and get away with stuff you just can't in the winter. Great chance to work on your technique. There has been 1-2 cm of new snow that last few days up on top. That is significant as it shows it's been cold enough to not be a slush fest up on the mountain. Enjoy. Think snow. Ride Ropeway to the top and then use Lift D. At end of day, ride Ropeway back down to base. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . Today marks the last day of operations at the Furano Ski Resort. A good crowd showed up, with about 60 cars in the parking lot. Of course, that translates into exactly ZERO people in the lift line. I rode up the Ropeway with only 2 people at 9:30 AM, and down with 3 folks headed out to Asahidake for some more fun. The official snow base dropped an amazing 25% from yesterday, from 20 cm down to 15 cm, so it’s clearly time to wrap it up. In spring, I’m always struck by the thought that it’s the perfect time for someone to learn how to ski. The snow is forgiving, it’s much warmer, and no crowds at all. Keep that in mind for your friends who ask you to teach then to ski/snowboard. Spring is where it’s at! ---------------------------- Season Wrap Up And so concludes the 2024-25 ski season in Furano. It was long, it was pretty good, but it wasn’t glorious. Like my compadre in Niseko, I’m mostly about the Powder. Regular snow is nice and all, and I know we need it to build up the base etc., but mucho Powder is where it’s at for me. If it’s not the Ultimate, it’s certainly on the Path to Enlightenment, or the Meaning of Life. We all know the official answer is “42”, but if you stop to think about it, wouldn’t 42” of fresh Hokkaido powder be one of the best days of your life? Coincidence? Perhaps not. I’ve had those days, and they’re impossible to forget. Our season total in Furano was just over 5 meters at the base, down about 40% from our average of 8 meters. The Law of Averages being what it is, that means next season should be better. But it wasn’t just the total, it was the manner of delivery. From Jan 1 onward, there were only TWO days that were at least 15 cm, and NONE at 20 cm or more. Sorry, that doesn’t do it for me. Downright depressing actually. Hakuba got slammed this year, which to me means, it’s our turn next year. Fortunately, as always, the normal skiing was great. Furano snow is super dry, and it stayed nice and cold this year, so conditions were excellent for those on a standard ski vacation. This season, I noticed a clear uptick in the number of “serious” powder skiers coming from outside Japan. I think the combination of the weak yen and “the word” getting out there inspired many to take their Bucket List trip to Hokkaido. Unfortunately, Mother Nature didn’t cooperate, but I talked with several visitors who were unfazed and considered this their “Recon” trip in preparation for coming back next year. Like surfing, it’s all about the Quest, and occasionally, everything lines up right. Hokkaido gets more than its fair share. Have a good summer. Stay in shape. Keep dreaming. Above all, Think Snow.
