Wow it's a very snowy morning here in Hakuba. It started snowing late afternoon/early evening yesterday and it has obviously been busy at it overnight. How much has fallen? A lot. Asking a few people around different areas of the Hakuba and Otari region this morning and you'll get different numbers. I would say about 40cm here in a rather central location, but I have also been told 30cm and up to even 50cm by some excited friends. Take your pick. Basically, a lot.... and it is still falling now and not looking like it wants to stop. Snow of the heavier variety from where I'm looking. As for the resorts, Hakuba 47 are reporting 30cm of new snowfall at the base of the resort. Happo-one are reporting an increase of 30cm at Usagidaira this morning. Goryu have yet to update their report - perhaps snowed in! I'll try to update that later on when they get it updated. Tsugaike have increased their base snow depth by 50cm and Cortina are reporting 40cm on upper slopes. So anyway, heavy snow continues to fall, clouds and fog and poor visibility. For now though only a slight wind in the village but stronger winds on the mountain. Bit of confusion regarding lifts. Strong winds affecting lifts at 47/Goryu as the time of writing and Cortina is only part open. Happo seems to be pretty much open as planned though we can perhaps expect some lifts to be operating at reduced speed. And surprisingly it's not too cold either in the village this morning, about -3 right now at Happo base. Temperature up at Usagidaira at 1400m is -6.8C with an average NE wind speed of 2.4m/s. This heavy and ongoing new snowfall on top of the weak upper snowpack will have greatly increased avalanche hazard. Staying within resort boundaries is highly recommended in these conditions. Don't take big risks - stay safe and take care out there. There is a ton of fun to be had on the resorts with more than enough fresh snow for everyone. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . The snow continued yesterday and this morning resorts around the valley are reporting up to 35cm of new snowfall since yesterday. The Deep Award goes to Hakuba Cortina this morning with that haul on it's upper slopes. Goryu is reporting 10cm on lower slopes and 30cm on upper slopes with Hakuba 47 reporting 25cm of new snow on the upper slopes. I think we can safely say that whichever resort you choose today you'll be rewarded with some fine snow conditions. Yey! There hasn't actually been a huge amount of snowfall down at village level. The slightly heavier snow of last night changed to drier snow and it is still coming down now this morning. Probably 5-10cm of snow at base levels and just a few cm where I live. It's the snow on the slopes that matters, though, right? It is a cold morning and not going to rise much about -5C today in the village, in fact we are forecast to get colder this afternoon and into tomorrow. It is all grey and white out there this morning with generally limited visibility. Should be great out there! With all the new snow, we have some rather dangerous avalanche conditions at the moment and venturing out to avalanche terrain is not recommended. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Happy New Year from Hakuba. Yesterday it was snowing through the day on the mountains and Hakuba has dry, light snow covering the trails at present. It is snowing this morning as well with about 2-3 cm of fresh snow around the village. Not the brightest and clearest of days with overcast skies and mist hugging the valley... visibility is poor. Current temperatures between around -3C degrees in the village and of course colder out on the mountains. There's not much of a wind at present. Snow is forecast to be falling all day today and through into the following few days as well, so we can't expect to see much or even any of the sun this week. I'm sure people won't complain about fresh snowfall though! The Happo-one Sakka Kitaone Quad was temporarily suspended earlier but all seems to be moving as normal now. There has been around 10-15cm of it fall in the village overnight and up to 30cm being reported from the mountains around Hakuba and Otari this morning. Hakuba 47 reporting 30cm on the upper slopes, as is Hakuba Cortina. There should be a decent layer of new snow on all of the slopes in the valley this morning. It's snowing now and the forecast is for more snow today and tomorrow. Fair to poor visibility on the slopes this morning depending on where you are, and there's hardly any wind to report. Beautiful blue skies all around contrasting with the white of the snow on the mountains make for some stunning scenery this morning. On a day like today, the mountains of Hakuba can still leave you breathless, even for old hands like myself. After the winds of yesterday, all is calm. All is cold as well... Hakuba 47 reporting a temperature of -15C up at the top there this morning and not much warmer at base at -13C. Still, get wrapped up good and it should make for some fine conditions. Up to 5cm of fresh snow on upper slopes, just a sprinkling lower down. Maybe a bit more cloud tomorrow but generally clearer skies up until Sunday, when more snow is due. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . It is a beautiful morning here in Hakuba - bright and clear with thin layers of cloud, but the blue sky is dominating proceedings today. Today is a blue bird day! It is also a cold start to the day, early on about -4C degrees and in the afternoon it should be the warmest at around 2C degrees. There is no wind around either, so it should be a pleasant day out. You want to know about snow? We had some decent snow coming down yesterday and while Goryu are officially reporting 5cm on their website, more like 15cm higher up. Goryu have 45cm as their snow depth (that almost seems too low to me), with Happo reporting 60cm. With the top-up yesterday though conditions should be certainly improved this morning for those lucky enough to be able to get out there. It does not look like any more runs or lifts are opening up though just quite yet. The forecast is still telling us to expect warmer conditions tomorrow along with more sun. Things start to look interesting from early Tuesday onwards though with snow lined up into next weekend and a real drop in temperatures once again. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . As expected, it snowed a fair bit last night with 30 cm of fresh snow reported above the 1600m level. Around the village around 3cm of fresh snow is on the ground. Hakuba 47 are reporting 10cm of fresh snow at base, 20cm up at the top of the Gondola and 30-40cm at the top of the resort. Happo-one say they have 90cm. So some new snowfall - and nice light snow too. It should be very nice up there today. Light breezes this morning now and temperatures are between 0-2 degrees. There is a little bit of fog and cloud about the mountain ranges at the moment, but clear at base levels from 780-1200m. The main highways have been cleared but are wet and could be slippery. We are still expecting that heavy snowfall and possibly blizzard like conditions over the weekend. Saturday and Sunday both look like they might bring with them some very considerable amounts of snow. Can't wait! In resort operations, at Tsugaike Kogen they have an additional lift moving - the Tsuga No2 pair lift. It also looks like Hakuba Goryu plan to have the top Number 3 pair lift operating from tomorrow. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . I bring good news! It is a very snow morning here in Hakuba. Yes, the snow is coming down very nicely this morning but curiously we are without the strong winds just at the moment, though they are still forecast to be with us as this snowfall is due to continue right through the weekend into early next week. We have at least 10cm of fresh snow down at village level at the moment but higher up on the mountain, for example, Happo-one are reporting an impressive 40cm of fresh snow up in the Usagidaira part of the resort. For those willing to venture out in the snow, like I said not as windy as we had forecast but visibility out there is very poor. Can't see much at all really. So need to take special care out there. It is still snowing and should be like this all weekend so it's really exciting to wonder just how much we can get this weekend and how awesome the conditions will be once this passes. Around the resorts, Happo have opened up the Panorama lift and course this morning. Hakuba Goryu have opened the Sky Four lift at the lower Toomi area. This morning also sees Hakuba 47 open up the lower Route 4 course and they now have the Line A and Gondola lifts operating as well. So gradually we are seeing more terrain open up, and with this snowstorm likely to bring us a good amount of snow, we can expect more of that in the coming days. Let it snow, I say! Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 62cm Weather overview Cloud, snow expected Wind - Temperature - Visibility Fair Posted on Friday 7th December 2012 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Last night the snowfall was around 2-3 cm but strong winds blew a lot of that snow off the main mountain at Happo-one which is around 90cm. The village base has not changed and pretty much the same conditions as we saw yesterday with just a bit of snow on the ground now. This morning the sun has been out, but grey clouds persist over Hakuba's peaks and it actually seems to be getting greyer and we do have snow showers forecast for the day. The temperature is between 0 and -3 degrees Celsius it feels fairly mild around the village. Presently there is close to no wind though, above 1200m slight breezes are blowing bringing the chill factor to about -3 degrees up top. Yesterday, the Hakuba Goryu resort opened the Alps No3 pair lift and with it the Grand Prix course. After a days rest, the Line E lift at Hakuba 47 also re-opens today. If the weather forecast is spot on later in the evening as temperatures drop to a freezing -7 more light dry snowfall is expected in the area and then we have that heavy snowfall forecast for the weekend. There is a high chance of strong winds over the weekend as well which may well affect the lifts at resorts. If we get all that snow though, into next week conditions should be very nice indeed. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Now this is definitely more like it! Lots of snow to report in Hakuba and a good 30cm or so in village areas. Hakuba Goryu this morning reporting 50cm of fluffy light snow up top since yesterday, and Hakuba 47 report 40cm. Happo-one are now reporting an impressive 180cm up at the Usagidaira area of the resort. Hakuba Goryu have now opened up the Iimori Milky Way lift. Hakuba 47 are talking about the chance of Line C opening later on today, which would open up more of the mountain. It's all action as the snow arrives. And with the snow still falling and likely to continue through today and into at least tomorrow, I think we can expect to see more opening up very soon. I'll keep you informed. Poor visibility out there this morning but not as windy as we were expecting, should be some very fine snow out there to play in. Exciting! The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . You want snow? We got it! It has been an amazing few days for snowfall in Hakuba and I hope that some of you have been able to enjoy it. Hakuba Goryu this morning is reporting another 40cm of fresh snowfall yesterday, and Hakuba 47 reporting another 30-40cm. Not a bad haul for the weekend?! Yesterday in all my excitement I renamed the Goryu 'Milky Four' lift the 'Milky Way' lift, my mistake - though actually today that lift is now closed and Goryu plans to open up the Iimori area again from the weekend. More news from Goryu is that they plan to have the Champion Dynamic downhill course open as soon as they have got it ready today, and they also hope to open the Champion Expert course from tomorrow. Hakuba 47 are opening up more today. The upper part of Route 1, and Routes 2,3,4,5,6 and 8 are planned to be open this morning so a large part of the resort should be open. At Happo-one, lifts that are open this week are as yesterday. I think we can hope to expect more opening up soon. Tsugaike Kogen are now reporting a whopping 240cm of snow on the upper slopes of the resort, though at the time of writing this morning strong winds on the mountain are preventing anything other than the lower part of the Gondola there from opening. The snow continues to fall, the roads are covered in snow. It's a cold -3C degrees this morning. It feels like mid-winter. Brilliant! (Forecast tells us that conditions should calm down and clear up somewhat around mid-week). The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Hello from Hakuba and apologies for the later report today. We had another 3-5cm of snow earlier on this morning in the village and about 20cm above 1200m, and it continues to snow this lunchtime. It has been a cold morning and even now remains at just around -3C degrees, there is no wind and the snow is nice and dry snow - and so is the air. We are expecting snow to continue through the day perhaps into tomorrow but after that things should be easing off somewhat and we might get to see some sun. For now, excellent conditions to enjoy out there. ------- Official snow depths and operations @ Tuesday 11th December 2012 AM: Hakuba Goryu: Goryu reported another 25cm of new snow up top and 15cm lower down today.
