Light snow was falling for lots of the time during the day yesterday though it didn't amount to that much; and I'm happy to report more than was perhaps expected overnight with snow on the ground again this morning. Still not a huge amount but resorts appear to be reporting 5-10cm of snowfall. Kagura: 5cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 10cm Maiko Snow Resort: 15cm With a few from yesterday I am measuring 9cm this morning. Snow isn't expected to keep falling for long this morning, easing off leaving us with just cloudy skies. Maybe if we are lucky a bit of sun later on. That is the forecast. But actually, as I am about to post this report approaching 8am, there are already some blue skies starting to appear over Minamiuonuma just to the north of Yuzawa and the sun is peeking through... so it may well end up a fine day weather wise. With that bit of fresh snow, there should be nice conditions to enjoy this morning. The forecast for the weekend is a return to more snow falling and perhaps some windy/stormy conditions. So come prepared! --- There are a lot of visitors to Yuzawa from overseas at the moment, many of them celebrating the Chinese New Year holidays. A very Happy Chinese New Year! This weekend is also the Tokamachi Snow Festival which is always worth a visit if possible with events and impressive snow sculptures. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday was an interesting one! It started snowing, and then it seemed to be clearing up for a bit. There was even a bit of sun for a short while. But then it really started snowing. Heavy snow at times and by 4pm, over 20cm of it had fallen on the top of the car and probably more in places. It was windy too and some very limited visibility in lots of areas. So it wasn’t the most friendly of weather conditions to say the least. At around the same time mid afternoon, the local Niigata forecast was predicting a further (up to) 50cm more snowfall before 10am this morning. Here’s how much fresh snow ski resorts are reporting this morning: Kagura: 40-50cm Maiko Snow Resort: 30-40cm (since last night) Ishiuchi Maruyama: 40cm (since last night) I can never work out why resorts report just snow 'since last night', rather than 'since last report'. It misses out a chunk of snow during the day... As of 8am this morning - and including the snow during the day yesterday - I have measured 48cm. There may well be more than that in places as it has been rather windy with the light snow blowing around lots of the time. But numbers aside --- there's a lot of fresh snowfall! And it is still snowing this morning, with snow forecast for the day and perhaps also into tomorrow. Let's see how much more we get out of this. --- GALA Yuzawa is going to be open as normal today. But it looks like the Tashiro area of Kagura as well as the Kagura Number 1 lift will not be opening due to strong wind conditions (the latter may well open if conditions improve). The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Snowfall through the day yesterday and it has been snowing lightly this morning this morning, though it seems to have eased off for the moment. In addition to the 16cm I measured by yesterday evening, there's another 12cm this morning. So a total of 28cm to add to the reports. Kagura: not announced yet (will update later if available) Ishiuchi Maruyama: 10cm (since 'last night') Maiko Snow Resort: 20cm (since 'last night') We might get more snow during the day today, but like I said for now it has eased off and there are even some signs that things might clear up somewhat with some blue skies appearing in places. Feels like conditions are changing. If it does clear up, with all the fresh snowfall over the weekend, it should be an excellent day to be out on the slopes. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday light snow continued in the morning but by late in the afternoon we had beautiful clear skies over Yuzawa and the sun shining. A beautiful end to the day. Out of the wind it felt fairly mild (and surprisingly 20+cm of snow has disappeared off the top of my garden shed by evening), colder when there was some wind on your face. But this morning, snow is back. Here's how much the ski resorts are reporting: Kagura (main): 20cm Kagura (Mitsumata): 15cm Kagura (Tashiro): 10cm Maiko Snow Resort: 10-20cm And I am measuring 8cm. So there should be a nice new layer of snow on the slopes; a little deeper in higher areas. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Snow was falling for much of the day yesterday though it was generally fairly light and didn't end up with much in terms of a fresh layer on the ground. Kagura resort is reporting up to 5cm of fresh snow and Maiko Snow Resort are reporting just a little without any numbers. There is a thin layer of snow on the top of cars parked since yesterday. There is some cloud around as of 7:30am but blue sky too and we can probably expect more of the blue skies and sunshine during the day today. It's a chilly start, -4C, and will likely rise to around +2C later this afternoon. It seems quite windy as well, though not enough to affect ski lift operations. More sunshine is forecast for tomorrow along with slightly higher temperatures. For those planning for the weekend, there might be some fresh snow falling on Saturday though it doesn't appear to be heavy snow. Can hardly believe that this time next week we'll be in March. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. After that clear start to the day, the skies quickly got overcast during the morning yesterday. It was raining for a while just to the north of Yuzawa, but it was quick to snow in Yuzawa itself - though a rather wet variety as it was fairly mild. (I suspect it wasn't quite as mild as we were told to expect it to be). Anyway this morning we actually have some fresh cm of snow to report and here is what the resorts are reporting: Kagura: 15-20cm Maiko Snow Resort: 15-20cm Not bad! Quality needs investigating but the snow on my car this morning looked pretty decent actually. I have measured 7cm to add to the totals for here in town. It is a cloudy start to the day and that is what the forecast is, with the chance of the sun showing up tomorrow. There's not much in terms of snowfall on the forecast over the coming week especially at lower levels and we'll need to keep an eye on that chance of rain sometime around Wednesday-Thursday. Hopefully forecasts can adjust in our favour. Yesterday we actually saw a bit of blue sky and sunshine for a short time during the day, amongst the nastiness of early morning and later stronger winds. But this morning I am happy to be able to report fresh snowfall. Here is what ski resorts are saying this morning: Kagura: 10cm Maiko Snow Resort: 20cm It's good to see some fresh snow on the ground and feel colder conditions too. There was 5cm on the top of my car which was parked just to the north of Ishiuchi Maruyama overnight and 8cm at our usual measuring point. And it is snowing now - rather windy too. Due to the winds it looks like Yuzawa Kogen is closed this morning as well as the Tashiro area of Kagura (and Kagura is open up until the Gondola). Other ski resorts appear to be planning on opening as normal. With these weather conditions though, there may well need to be adjustments or disruptions. Not the friendliest of weather conditions! Tomorrow is expected to be much calmer and sunny from the start. And warm too, with Sunday getting even warmer. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. There was more light snowfall during the day on and off yesterday and it didn’t really amount to much in terms of new cm, and there was even some sunshine at times in places. It remained quite cold too and didn’t get too far above zero which was a good thing. Visitors for the weekend (and the ski resorts themselves) will be thankful for that delivery of snow after what we got yesterday! This morning, it is sunshine from the start. A beautiful day is on the cards. We have been expecting warmer conditions this weekend and it still looks like what we are going to get. By lunchtime it might be as warm as 10C in town as the sun gets to work. On Sunday the freezing level will zoom right up to around 3500m and we might experience temperatures even above 15C! That’s going to melt some snow and boggle some minds. Very happily, come Monday it should start getting colder and we might get some fresh. Possibly even heavy snow in higher elevations. It's not a lot - just a sprinkling of 1-2cm or so - but it is still better than the rain we had to put up with. Kagura resort is reporting 3-5cm fresh snow and Maiko Snow Resort are actually reporting 5-10cm, so that's good to hear. We are expecting clearer skies during the day today and actually a fair bit of sunshine over the coming week if the forecasts are correct. It was approaching 20 degrees in town yesterday which is pretty shocking, so I am happy to report a real drop in temperatures this morning. Unfortunately, it has also been raining lightly at town level as temperatures level off at around 4-5C today. Some very light snow at Naeba best and some snow falling at higher elevations too but not the kind that is going to build up to anything significant. Hopefully by this afternoon it will be drier and from tomorrow we have lots of sunshine and clearer skies on the forecast right into at least the middle of next week and some warm conditions too (especially from Monday onwards). So it should be fine weather over the weekend. Full on spring snow conditions of course but come with that in mind and there's still a lot of fun to be had.
