The mountain is covered in wet snow, with nothing deep except on the north side at 1000m. Be careful of getting your skis caught in the heavy snow. Snowmelt will continue during the day. Beware of snow bridges collapsing and falling into creeks. The water is cold. Observations indicate the avalanche risk is low, but cornices are prone to collapse. Do not approach cornices, they can collapse suddenly and are as heavy as a bus. Gate opening times are undecided, please follow the patrols instructions. There are many dangers in the winter mountains other than avalanches. Always be cautious. Never enter strictly off limits areas defined by the Niseko Rules. I don't have any fresh snowfall to report this morning and the weekend is stating with some fairly overcast kind of skies. It's quite bright in places with signs of the sun possibly breaking through. Much of Japan looks set to 'enjoy' (that seems the wrong word) a sunny and very warm weekend. Up here we might not get much of the sunny bit, but it will be relatively warm and I could definitely notice that on my early morning walk today. It was almost... toasty! (Relatively, of course). Tomorrow will be the peak of the warm blip with a return to somewhat colder conditions from Monday. Some fresh snow? Hmmmm, maybe, but I wouldn't expect much. Monday is a national holiday in Japan, the Emperor’s Birthday indeed, and so a few extra locals may venture into the Niseko zone this long weekend. ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base 6am: -1℃, no new snow, calm. Moiwa 800m: -2.8℃, W1.8m/s, no new snow calm. Annupuri 1100m: -4.2℃, W5.5m/s. Village 1000m: -3.1℃, WSW5.1m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -3.6℃, N2.1m/s. Hanazono 800m: -0.4℃, N3.0m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape SW4m/s, Kamui Cape SW22m/s, 1011hPa, wave 1.6m. We have a Pacific high pressure system to the west and strong southerly winds at higher elevations. No new snowfall. The peak gates opened at 10:00 AM yesterday and 3,000 people skied the mountain with no major accidents. Southwest winds are expected to strengthen above 1100m on the east side of the mountain. Gate opening will depend on lift operation. If you are heading towards Goshiki from the peak, it’s recommended to cut out left from the North Face early, at around 1200m, then head west toward Chinpoko Rock. Then from there, down to Goshiki. Below that elevation, you’ll have to traverse two steep streams, both of which pose a risk of large-scale avalanches. Always cross streams 1 by 1. While this morning’s observations indicated a low avalanche risk, there’s always the risk of avalanches from deeper weak layers, known as secondary avalanches. Group leaders and guides should be careful; the mountain is rough from yesterday’s tracks. Never enter the restricted areas of Anbetsu, Haru no Taki or Yu no Sawa in search of fresh snow. Even if you get lucky, others could follow and have an accident. Like the frequent recent avalanches occurring in Europe, blizzards often cause avalanches in Niseko. Here, risk assessment is based on the structural integrity of snowdrifts created by blizzards. Avalanches are natural phenomena and accidents do not occur without people. Ended up that my personal stuff will be on a different day, so I'm here at my normal time. It has been a lovely early morning with largely blue skies and some cloud. Niseko Village this morning apparently enjoyed the novelty of updating some reported snowfall numbers yesterday morning, and are this morning reporting another 7cm at base and 18cm (really?) up top. This is on the same morning that Hanazono reports 3-5cm, Hirafu reports 5cm and Annupuri goes with 0cm. Confusing! Bonkers! All lifts seem to be opening as normal, apart from the King Number 6. I'm not sure what is going on there, perhaps just a temporary delay. OK, so it looks like Japan is going to have a rather spring-like weekend with some unwelcome warmth expected, particularly on Sunday. It does look like it will be much colder again come Monday, but forecasts currently don't show a whole lot of snow over the last week of the month. My observed snowfall for February 2026 is currently at 150cm. We have had fairly consistent snow across reports in February, though numbers have been... modest. Anyway, I'll put my mind to the subject in my monthly roundup at the beginning of March. ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base 6am: -8℃, calm, trace new snow. Moiwa 800m: -8.3℃, WNW8.0m/s, cornice and snowdrift development eased, calm. Annupuri 1100m: -11.3℃, WNW9.3m/s. Village 1000m: -9.8℃, WNW4.4m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -11.0℃, N4.2m/s. Hanazono 800m: -6.7℃, N6.6m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape NW7m/s, Kamui Cape SW7m/s, 1018hPa, wave 0.7m. We are under a high-pressure system, sea and mountain are calm. Wave heights are down from 5m to 1m and wind speeds are down from 30m/s to under 10m/s. There has been major cornice and snowdrift development and the terrain is above 800m has changed. Wind speeds have dropped to around 10m/s for about 12hrs now and snowdrifts are consolidating. The fractured surface at 800m is 50cm deep, with no weak layers and stable above that. Based on the morning observations and assessments, the avalanche risk has decreased, and the summit gates are expected to open today, although a little later than usual . Please follow patrol instructions. Watch out for large avalanches from deeper layers on steep, open slopes on the southeast side at 1,100m. If one happens it will be large, so do not wait in the bottom of valleys or gullies. The snow in the forest is good, consistent with good resistance, but if you fall, it will be deep and heavy. Carry snowshoes or skins. Do not carelessly duck ropes to go off piste. Also, never enter strictly off limits areas. One stupid action can cause accidents. There is no safety in this sport. Don’t be overconfident, gain experience, and always be vigilant. The snow is excellent. Do you have a beacon on? Do you have a shovel or probe? Do you have a short rope? The snow changes daily. While strong wind is causing lots of lifts to be on hold at the start of the day - only a handful of base lifts are starting up at 8:30am - we do have a nice amount of fresh snow, largely coming from later yesterday and overnight. It is one of those days when snowfall observations will very likely differ greatly as the wind is a factor blowing it around. This is well weird. As I prepare this report, on the official Niseko United website, Hanazono, Hirafu and Annupuri ski areas are all reporting 0cm of fresh snowfall. At the same time, Niseko Village is reporting 25cm! Regular readers of this report and that official 'sauce' will know how basically Niseko Village usually reports (or doesn't report as is the case) 0cm every day, even when there is clearly lots of fresh snow. Very strange that all of a sudden we get 25cm on a day when the other ski areas are showing nothing. I don't know what is happening with all that. Still, it probably takes the reported total snowfall of the season at Niseko Village ski area up to about 30cm! :) Anyway, enough about number nerdiness. There's snow out there. We should enjoy it. Pesky wind interference aside, of course. Heads up. I need to see to some personal stuff early tomorrow morning and so I will be later with my report. Moiwa 800m: -8.1°C, NNW 17m/s (gusts 30m/s), observation not possible. Annupuri 1100m: -10.3°C, WNW 14.4m/s. Niseko Village 1000m: -9.0°C, NNW 17.9m/s. Hirafu Hanazono: -8.7°C, N 16.2m/s. Hanazono 800m: -7.5°C, N 11.9m/s. Sea of Japan Benkei Cape: NNW 17m/s (27m/s at 22:00 last night). Kamui Cape: N16m/s, 1010hPa, 5.0m waves. A strong winter pressure pattern has set in following the passage of the low-pressure system. Since 22:00 last night, the pressure gradient has tightened, bringing blizzard conditions to both the sea and the mountains, with wave heights reaching 5m. A large amount of high-density, heavy wind-packed snow has accumulated, making the pack highly susceptible to fractures along lines of weakness regardless of layering. The avalanche risk for the Niseko range and surrounding mountains is EXTREMELY HIGH. All gates will remain closed. Follow the instructions of the ski patrol. Heavy wind-affected snow can trigger avalanches even within the tree line; use extreme caution touring Nitonupuri. Most avalanche accidents in Niseko occur during blizzards accompanied by heavy snowfall. Do not over-rely on pit-check risk assessments. The structural fragility of the wind-packed slabs causes avalanches, regardless of the presence of specific layers. While the pressure gradient will loosen in the afternoon and slabs will begin to consolidate, however, looking at the snowfall transition, the risk remains high until late tonight. Do not duck the ropes or enter strictly prohibited areas. It is best to stay within the resort boundaries today. The snow is deep and heavy. Watch out for falls and tree collisions. The avalanche risk on the Osawa cornice face at 1000m is extremely high. Do not stay at the bottom of gullies; avalanches run through them. This information is issued for the safety of all resort users. Yes, I'm back home and had my toast. All is well. This morning we have some snow falling and a variety of conditions out there; as far as I can see on the webcams anyway. Looks like there's some limited visibility out there still, and earlier on the Avalanche Report (below) was reporting fog. Top lifts all appear to be on hold at the time of this report. We do seem to be expecting fresh snow before tomorrow morning - though not much lined up on the forecasts beyond that and a relatively mild weekend forecast. ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -2°C, no snowfall, calm. Moiwa 800m: -5.6°C, SSE 2.6m/s, dense fog. Annupuri 1100m: -7.4°C, SW 2.2m/s, dense fog. Niseko Village 1000m: -6.3°C, SSW 4.4m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -6.8°C, N 8.0m/s, dense fog. Warm air remains below 600m, while cold air is flowing in above 700m; the mountain is covered in dense fog. All summit gates will remain closed until visibility improves. Follow the instructions of the ski patrol. Southeasterly winds are expected to strengthen as the pressure gradient steepens. Based on observations, the snowpack is consolidated and stable; the overall avalanche risk is low. Do not enter strictly prohibited areas such as Ambetsu, Haru-no-taki, and Yunosawa in search of fresh tracks. Please respect the Niseko Rules. This information is issued to prevent accidents outside the resort boundaries. Many dangers besides avalanches lurk in the mountains, such as falling into cracks or colliding with trees. Always remain cautious. The groomed runs are in excellent condition. It is better to stay on the groomers until the fog clears. Flat light is making it difficult to see bumps on the slopes. Be cautious. To repeat: do not duck the ropes carelessly. Others will follow your lead, which will eventually trigger an accident. Results may vary, thanks to westerly winds, but it looks like less over at Moiwa/Annupuri with Hanazono reporting up to 14cm on upper areas. My own measurement for this report is 6cm. It is snowing as I write this, and quite nicely actually, and lifts all appears to be preparing to open as scheduled. Sun is forecast for tomorrow. And then snow again on Wednesday. I had a good chat with Mr. SnowJapan yesterday and got a bit of peek at what is being prepared for next season. Get ready for in-your-face flashing ads, annoying popups and hype-tastic clickbait chasing headlines! Of course, I'm kidding. It's not my place to divulge too much, but I'd say be prepared for another all-new and 'refined' iteration of SnowJapan. I very much approve of what I saw and can't wait to see how it all develops in time for the 2026-2027 season. (Just to be clear, do not expect in-your-face flashing ads, annoying popups and hype-tastic clickbate chasing headlines. Moiwa 800m: -7.4°C, NNW 8.4m/s, 20m/s gusts between 4:00-5:00 AM, cornices and snowdrifts developing. Annupuri 1100m: -9.9°C, W 4.2m/s. Niseko Village 1000m: -8.4°C, NNW 5.0m/s. Hirafu Hanazono: -9.3°C, N 3.2m/s, 10cm snowfall from midnight to dawn. Hanazono 800m: -6.8°C, NNW 4.3m/s. Sea of Japan Benkei Cape NW14m/s, Kamui Cape NNE3m/s, 1013hPa, 1.5m waves. Following the passage of the low-pressure system, a winter pressure pattern has set in. Snowdrifts developed from midnight to dawn due to the westerly winds. The new snow sits on top of the Feb 15th temperature gradient layer. You will feel the firm base underneath in some spots. Accumulation on knolls at 1000m elevation is 50-100cm; the avalanche risk this morning is relatively high. If the winds subside and lifts begin operating, the main gates will open. Follow the instructions of the ski patrol. Be cautious as fast-moving avalanches caused by shallow (40cm) wind-slab fractures are likely on the Osawa cornice face (1100m) and the Kozan-no-sawa sidewalls (1000m). Snow conditions improve as you descend into the trees. Watch out for tree collisions; you won’t win against a tree. Niseko permits out-of-bounds skiing and operates under the Niseko Rules. Always be cautious when outside the resort boundaries. Do not be overconfident in your experience or knowledge. Furthermore, you must never enter the strictly prohibited areas defined by the rules. Please respect the Niseko Rules for the sake of the freedom to ski out-of-bounds. Do you have your beacon, shovel, short rope, and probe? The mountain condition is not bad. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 19cm Snowfall at base this season 237cm Happy New Year! Yesterday, we had some periods of snowfall during the day, but in a somewhat familiar pattern; it just didn’t keep going or get to be ‘full-on’. I don’t know how to explain it better than to say it has often felt a bit... half-hearted. This morning I am happy to report that we got a nice addition overnight and it is snowing quite heavily as of 8:15am. It is also nice and cold. This is allowing me to feel that we have a feel-good, positive start to the year. (I was a bit surprised to see the very large snowfall numbers in the Avalanche Report this morning; ski areas aren't reporting that much, and you can see my own measurement). Bottom line: good, fresh snow! I have already enjoyed my hatsu-toast (‘first toast of the year’), another of those Japanese traditions dating back to the Edo period. Or perhaps even before that. Tomorrow, I will bring you news of an exciting new, super-expensive lift ticket that I heard about yesterday. If you have way too much money and are looking for ways to get rid of it, you might find that one appealing! For today, though, it’s time to take a bit of a snapshot of the season so far. A look back at the season so far: until the end of December 2025 Early every month during the winter season, I do a recap thingy where I look at the season so far and compare it to previous seasons. For those unfamiliar with how this works, the numbers I am introducing below are all the snowfall measurements I observed near the base of Hirafu. The monthly and annual numbers in these reports are comparable, because they come to you from the same spot and are being observed by the same person every day over the last 14 seasons. It is important to always keep in mind that 'snowfall numbers at base' is by no means the full story of how the season is going. My observed snowfall data does not account for the fact that there is usually more snow at higher elevations or, indeed, say anything about snow quality. (More information on snowfall numbers here). Statistics may be interesting, and the numbers themselves may be comparable, but much more insight into the season can be gained in the daily commentary I write in my report each morning. Always remember to look beyond the numbers. Anyway, with all that out of the way, let’s numbers! Here's how much snowfall I have measured during the months of November and December every season since 2012. November 2025: 29cm November 2024: 38cm November 2023: 120cm November 2022: 17cm November 2021: 85cm November 2020: 62cm November 2019: 85cm November 2018: 84cm November 2017: 188cm November 2016: 110cm November 2015: 61cm November 2014: 30cm November 2013: 123cm November 2012: 118cm December 2025: 189cm December 2024: 311cm December 2023: 247cm December 2022: 336cm December 2021: 307cm December 2020: 348cm December 2019: 207cm December 2018: 333cm December 2017: 406cm December 2016: 181cm December 2015: 244cm December 2014: 519cm December 2013: 275cm December 2012: 418cm After some initial delays from the planned opening dates, all five main ski areas on the mountain opened on 4th December. The small Asahigaoka ski area behind Kutchan Station was scheduled to open on 25th December, but that was delayed. As far as I can tell, it is planning to open tomorrow (2nd January) – if there is enough snow. Here are the total snowfall numbers for the season so far (November + December): 2025/2026 season up to the end of December 2025: 218cm 2024/2025 season up to end of December 2024: 349cm 2023/2024 season up to end of December 2023: 367cm 2022/2023 season up to end of December 2022: 353cm 2021/2022 season up to end of December 2021: 392cm 2020/2021 season up to end of December 2020: 410cm 2019/2020 season up to end of December 2019: 292cm 2018/2019 season up to end of December 2018: 417cm 2017/2018 season up to end of December 2017: 594cm 2016/2017 season up to end of December 2016: 291cm 2015/2016 season up to end of December 2015: 305cm 2014/2015 season up to end of December 2014: 549cm 2013/2014 season up to end of December 2013: 398cm 2012/2013 season up to end of December 2012: 536cm There's no getting around the fact that, so far this year, I have observed the least snowfall (at this point) since these statistics began in the 2012/2013 season. Still better than many regions of Japan this season, but with spells of mildness and rain, it has been a less than impressive start. We had a period starting around the second week of December and a couple of days just after Christmas when we enjoyed some consistently decent snowfall. Those were the times when we got to enjoy brief flashes of Niseko goodness, but, as I noted earlier, it just didn’t keep going. I was able to report snowfall on 7 days in November and on 23 days in December. The most snowfall reported in any one report was the 24cm reported on 12th December. I made a few extended comments across several reports, particularly on 4th December, 25th December, and 26th December. I can't really think of much else to add at the moment. With the top lifts and gates yet to open this season, it still somehow feels like we're waiting for the main event to get started. Here's the % of the eventual season total that we had received by the end of December in previous seasons. By the end of December 2024, as a % of the season total: about 40% By the end of December 2023, as a % of the season total: about 42% By the end of December 2022, as a % of the season total: about 35% By the end of December 2021, as a % of the season total: about 34% By the end of December 2020, as a % of the season total: about 34% By the end of December 2019, as a % of the season total: about 40% By the end of December 2018, as a % of the season total: about 44% By the end of December 2017, as a % of the season total: about 47% By the end of December 2016, as a % of the season total: about 43% By the end of December 2015, as a % of the season total: about 31% By the end of December 2014, as a % of the season total: about 48% By the end of December 2013, as a % of the season total: about 34% By the end of December 2012, as a % of the season total: about 36% Let us hope that the corresponding percentage will be lower than the above numbers this season. (Obviously, we won't know that until the season has finished). You never know, I might be talking about record-breaking January snowfall this time next month. And nothing would make me happier! Moiwa 800: -12.2℃, WNW7.2-15m/s. Annupuri 1100m: -18.3℃, W10.1-20m/s. Village1000m: -17.2℃, WSW9.2m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -17.3℃, N2.5m/s, 50cm new snowfall. Hanazono 800m: -12.9℃, NNE4.0m/s. Sea of Japan Benkei cape WNW17-20m/s, Kamui cape SW20m/s, 1005hPa, 2.2m waves. Winter-type pressure pattern, narrow isobars over the sea and mountains with wind and snow. Significant snow accumulation; wind-drifted snow exceeding 100cm is developing on the upper slopes of leeward cornices. Consolidation cannot keep up with accumulation, leading to fractures along internal weak lines within the snowslabs. This could create fracture surfaces exceeding 50cm, making surface avalanches highly likely. Avalanche risk is high. Do not enter the following restricted areas: Yunosawa, Harunotaki, Annupuri Osawa at 1000m elevation on the cornice slopes, Kōzan-no-sawa, and the upper slopes of the Higashi-One. Do not duck ropes when you go out of bounds. This snowfall will flatten the grass and restore Niseko to its usual state. Today’s snow is like a New Year’s gift, but don’t be greedy. Once the storm passes and wind-drifted snow stabilizes in a layered structure, the mountain summit gates will open. Follow patrol instructions. Depending on local weather conditions, the No. 6 Moiwa Gate is scheduled to open for limited hours, 10am-12pm today. Gullies are still uncovered, and the bush is thick. Snow is deep. Listen to the patrol’s advice. It’s best to carry a beacon. Niseko respects the freedom to ski out of bounds, but we are always concerned for your safety. Overconfidence and ignorance cause accidents. Today, you can enjoy yourself fully even around the groomed slopes. Do not push too hard. Beware of frostbite. I am very pleased to report that the new year has continued to start really well. I'm also pleased that I can start being more excited about snowfall in my reports (if you missed my monthly recap yesterday, you can find it here). I have complicated feelings when I am compelled to bring less-than-excite information and find myself really searching for the right words. I find myself suitably vexed. Anyway, I have another 24cm of snowfall to report this morning, so that's over 40cm over the my last two reports. That sounds more like what we expect! I'm a bit surprised again this morning seeing another 40cm on the Avalanche Report, but seeing that just makes me want to get out there all the more and jolly well check it out. All good. Conditions should be really very good this morning. We've even got some blue sky and sun to help us see it all. Be sure to read the Avalanche Report today (below) -- gates from tomorrow? OK, I have things to do! ;) ------------------------------------ Yesterday I noticed some very exciting news from Niseko Tokyu Grand Hirafu ski area - the 'Fast Pass + First Track Premium Lift Ticket' . Hirafu apparently looked on enviously at that 30-minute, 20,000+ yen ticket that Hanazono was offering last season and thought, 'hmmm, we can do better than that! This special ticket, limited to just 20 on the days that it is available (New Year and weekends/holidays from 10th January through 15th February), can be yours for just 150,000 yen. At first, I thought that meant that it was 150,000 yen for a group of 20 people. Silly me! (I should have known better). I went to the official website to confirm. I put 3 of these tickets in the cart, and it showed it would cost 450,000 yen. So, it's 150,000 yen per person, adult or child. So, what does one person get for their hard-earned 150,000 yen? • A 'premium' Niseko Tokyu Grand Hirafu 1 Day Pass • Access to the Ace Gondola between 8:00am and 8:30am • Fast pass / priority lift boarding for the day • A 5,000 yen restaurant voucher • Consumption tax included! A standard 1-day ticket valid at Hirafu (and Hanazono) costs 10,400 yen when bought online. Putting my mathematical skills to work, it seems to me that if you buy one of these tickets, you are paying 134,600 yen (150,000 yen – 10,400 yen – 5,000 yen for the restaurant voucher) for the early morning 30 minutes on the gondola (3 rides?) and priority lift boarding for that one day. That's just wild. The blurb says you can 'spend a refined and unforgettable time on the grand scale unique to Niseko Tokyu Grand Hirafu'. I'd love to know how they came to the 150,000 yen charge. Why not go all out and ask, say, 250,000 yen or something even more ridiculous? Might as well, right? In the smaller print, it notes that if you buy this ticket, you do not need to buy a regular ticket to use the lifts at the ski area. And that if you want to ski at the other ski areas on the mountain, you'll need to buy an extra ticket for those. I found that quite amusing. Having said that, in the bigger picture, I don't really find any of this stuff amusing at all. It's that Earth 2.0 feeling again. ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa Base: -7℃, light wind, 40cm snowfall. Moiwa Mikaeri 800m: -6.6℃, NNW11.9m/s (20m/s @ 6am), major snowdrift development. Annupuri 1100mm: -8.4℃, NW4.9(15m/s @ 6am)m/s, major cornice and snowdrift development. Niseko Village 1000m: -7.2℃, N2.9m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -7.9℃, N10.3m/s(20m/s @ 6am). Hirafu Hanazono 800m: -13℃, NNE3.9m/s Coastal data: Benkei Cape NNW10m/s, Kamui Cape N13m/s, 1007hPa, 3.5m waves. The typical winter pressure pattern continues, with strong winds and snow from the west. Significant wind-driven snowdrift development at 1000m and observations indicate a tendency to fracture on weak layers. The fracture caused by structural weakness in the snowdrift, not a fracture from a known weak layer. This type of avalanche occurs from wind and snow accompanied by heavy snowfall. Today, the avalanche risk is HIGH above 1,000 meters, including Osawa cornice slope, the entire Back Bowl, and the East Ridge. Harutaki is extremely dangerous due to the surface slabbing from the sun. Remember the 1998 accident? The peak gate is scheduled to open on the 3rd. I have 6cm of snowfall to report since yesterday. Welcome, of course, though not as much as we would have liked. That brings the total snowfall for my December reports up to 189cm. Today I'm going to put together my monthly recap and I will post that tomorrow morning. Night skiing at Annupuri is planned until 11:00pm tonight. (Now that is proper 'night skiing'!). I can't find any info regarding any other possible night skiing extensions at the other ski areas. Floodlit skiing aside, there will surely be lots of New Year Eve events going on tonight, no doubt including fireworks. It's fun to see the Country Road Chair at Niseko Village moving. It's a bit of a lazy one, that lift! Anyway, that's it from me for this year. Have a safe NYE and see you in 2026! ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base -7℃, light wind, slight snowfall and good visibility. Moiwa 800: -11.6℃, WNW6.4m/s, snowdrift developments with light snowfall. Mikaeri 800m: -10℃, WNW4.1m/s, slight snowfall, good visibility. Annupuri 1100m: -14.3℃, WNW5.7m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -13.6℃, ESE2.3m/s, good vis, light snowfall. Hanazono 800m: -8.9℃, NE2.0m/s. Sea of Japan Benkei cape NW14m/s, Kamui cape WNW10m/s, 1012hPa, 2.4m waves. We are currently under a winter pressure pattern. Sea swells are around 3m, and westerly winds are blowing at approximately 10m/s above 1000m elevation. While the snow clouds are thin and snowfall is light, wind slabs are slowly developing and consolidating. Cornices can fracture instantly, but based on our observations and data evaluation, the overall avalanche risk remains low. The groomed runs are in fair condition, but the snow cover is thin. Please watch out for bumps and uneven terrain. The resort is crowded, be careful to remain under control. Do not duck the ropes for the small amount of fresh snow at the side of the course; you may get stuck in the brush and be unable to return. While we aimed to open out-of-bounds skiing by the end of the year, current conditions make this difficult. The lack of snow makes rescue operations extremely difficult. We ask for your understanding and cooperation with the Niseko Rules. This information is issued to prevent accidents for all resort users. Niseko respects the freedom of out-of-bounds skiing and manages the Niseko Rules accordingly. Please understand and respect these rules. The snow will come eventually. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 212cm Hello from Niseko. It has been snowing from earlier this morning. Hirafu is reporting 10cm of fresh snow across the mountain (both base and top) this morning. I can't see evidence of 10cm of fresh snow. What I am able to report as of 8am is 1cm of early morning snow and it is snowing nicely right now. You can take a look at the snow on the top of the Niseko Gondola building to get an idea (second image below). A little earlier, Hanazono was reporting 0cm at base and 5cm higher up, and both Annupuri and the Avalanche Report were reporting 0cm of fresh. That's where we are this morning. The forecasts do happily tell enticing tales of continued snowfall across the next several days, starting now, so hopefully we're about to sign off on a proper good delivery worthy of some celebratory toast. (I have a special recipe for special snow). It was truly awful to hear about that horrible accident over at a ski area in Otaru. More on that in the Avalanche Report below. ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mowia base 0℃, light wind, no snowfall and icy. Moiwa 800m: -3.1℃, light wind, slight snowfall. Annupuri 1100m: -5.8℃, ESE0m/s. Hirafu Hanazono: -5.7℃, zero wind, good visibility. Hanazono 800m: -2.7℃, S0.0m/s, thick fog, bad visibility. Sea of Japan Benkei cape light wind, Kamui cape N4m/s, 1011hPa, 0.5m waves. The pressure gradient remains weak within the low-pressure zone, bringing calm conditions to both sea and mountain. A cold air mass is currently replacing the previous warm air. Consequently, fog is present on the eastern slopes below 800m, while visibility remains good above 1000m. Based on our observations and data evaluation, the avalanche risk is low. Course conditions above 800m remain good due to sustained sub-zero temperatures. However, below 600m, where the temperature went above freezing level, the groomed surface has frozen, leaving the terrain rough with ice chunks in places. Please ski with caution. A tragic accident occurred the day before yesterday, where a child lost his life after being entangled in a machine. Words cannot express the profound sorrow we feel for the family during this heartbreaking time. Accidents are not just someone else’s problem. But it's an 'and counting' kind of situation, as it is snowing quite nicely now. I note Annupuri appears to be reporting 10cm over there. Anyway, I hope that the taps will be turned on a bit more forcefully over the next few days. While this morning doesn't feel cold, it does look like it should be getting noticeably colder starting from tomorrow. There's some really low visibility out there in places now. Some of the very bright orange people over at Hanazono might be visible easily enough, but otherwise take extra care out there. With a lot of people around, it's easy to bump into folk. That often doesn't end well. All scheduled lifts are moving as normal. Someone asked about when will top lifts and gates open. I really don't know. I'm don't hear the inside discussions on those things and am in no way related to any of the people/businesses making those decisions. I'm guessing we need more snow for it to happen. ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -1℃, no snowfall, calm. Moiwa 800m: -3℃, ESE3.0m/s. Sea of Japan Benkei cape: S6m/s, Kamui cape S9.6m/s, 1015hPa, 1.3 waves. Warm air is flowing in ahead of the low-pressure system. With no significant snow clouds, wind slabs have stabilized. Based on observations and data evaluation, the overall avalanche risk is currently low. Please be advised that out-of-bounds skiing from the resort and climbing to the summit are not yet permitted. Within the resort area, all users are obligated to follow the Resort Regulations and the Niseko Rules. This mountain brings together a diverse range of people; these rules are implemented to ensure the safety of every individual. If one person ducks a rope, others will follow. Do not attempt to climb to the peak from the resort, and do not enter strictly prohibited areas such as Yu-no-Sawa. Rope-ducking is taken very seriously here; if caught, your lift pass will be confiscated. On the mountain today, the groomed runs are in good condition. However, visibility is flat due to low light, making it difficult to see bumps and contours—please ski with caution. The resort is crowded, so please be considerate of those around you.
