Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 15cm Snowfall at base this season 476cm Posted on Wednesday 24th January 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Lots of nature news yesterday with the eruption (see below for more on that - Yuzawa is totally unaffected) and the Kanto region still coping with the snowfall that they got. Phew! It took until evening for snow to start falling properly here yesterday. Those curiously shy clouds moved in during the day with some wet snow by later on, then some decent snow as things got darker. We were hoping for up to 40cm of snow this morning (as per the local Niigata forecast) but... that didn't quite happen. Yes, we do have a welcome layer of snow - I am measuring 15cm - but can't help but feel a little disappointed with that. Still, the forecasts remain firm in their absolute promise of tons of snow over the next few days. I still believe! And I can't wait to report it... For the record here is the amount of fresh snowfall that resorts are reporting: Kagura (main): 40cm Kagura (Mitsumata): 30cm Kagura (Tashiro): 20cm Maiko Snow Resort: 20-30cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 10cm Some good numbers up at Kagura there. More please! --- About the volcanic eruption at Kusatsu-Shirane-san in Gunma Prefecture on 23rd January 2018 As you may have heard, yesterday morning there was a limited volcanic eruption followed by an avalanche in western Gunma Prefecture, close to the border with northern Nagano Prefecture. The eruption at Motoshirane happened close to the more famous Kusatsu-Shirane-san - and also the slopes of the Kusatsu Kokusai ski resort. Around 80 skiers were evacuated to an area near the upper area of Kusatsu-Shirane with some trapped in the gondola and on lifts for a while. Very sadly, as a result of this event there was one fatality and a number of injuries, apparently due to flying rocks and the avalanche. As far as we can tell there have been no further eruptions since yesterday morning. Our thoughts are with everyone involved and caught up in this. This incident made the international news with some people visiting Japan asking if their ski resort will be safe, and so we thought we would add this information to our daily reports this morning. The only ski resort affected by this event is Kusatsu Kokusai in Gunma Prefecture. It is currently unclear how this will affect the top area of the resort, but it seems that the lower slopes of Kusatsu Kokusai will remain open today – those slopes are quite a distance from the affected area. (And perhaps this is a good example of how Japanese people are used to living with the threat of earthquakes and volcanos!) The ski resorts in Shiga Kogen (Nagano) and Manza Onsen (Gunma) are the other closest ski resorts, but they are outside of the 2km restricted area -- and are unaffected. And of course, ski resorts that are further away than that are also totally unaffected. The central part of Kusatsu town itself is about 7km away from the volcano and so also unaffected. We hope this information helps. --- Updated: Wednesday 24th January 2018 Ski resorts in Yuzawa: GALA Yuzawa - 220cm Iwappara - 140cm Kagura - Kagura area: 310cm - Mitsumata area: 210cm - Tashiro area: 260cm Kandatsu Kogen - 190cm Naeba - 220cm (base) NASPA Ski Garden - 160cm Yuzawa Kogen - Top: 180cm - Base: 130cm Yuzawa Park - 120cm Yuzawa Nakazato - 130cm --- Ski resorts in Minamiuonuma (just to the north of Yuzawa): Ishiuchi Maruyama - 180cm Joetsu Kokusai - 180cm Maiko Snow Resort - Top: 200cm - Base: 110cm Muikamachi Hakkaisan - Closed on Wednesdays until 14th March - 250cm Yuzawa Now 2017-2018 season Data as of Wednesday 24th January 2018 Total snowfall at base so far 476cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 31 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 54cm (14th and 27th December) November 2017 snowfall 14cm reported on 3 days December 2017 snowfall 277cm reported on 16 days January 2018 snowfall 185cm reported on 12 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 3cm Snowfall at base this season 957cm Posted on Saturday 24th January 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Very light snow lazily falling early morning and since last night about 3cm on the car. High up Kagura report up to 10cm of fresh snow this morning and Naeba 5-10cm. Maiko Snow Resort reports 5cm of fresh. Certainly better than rain that's for sure! Things gradually got a bit colder during the day yesterday with the rain/sleet turning to proper snow, but as noted above just a thin layer of new this morning. Mostly just cloudy now with limited visibility, but the forecast indicates a clearing up with sunny skies possible by this afternoon. Currently around -1C here at town level with a high this afternoon expected of around +3C, and nothing much of a wind that I can feel out. Possibly light snow fall overnight and tomorrow more cloud/chance of sun. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 57cm Snowfall at base this season 533cm Posted on Thursday 25th January 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It took a while to get going yesterday but come mid-afternoon the snow was really coming down hard... real Snow Country-style heavy snow. The kind we really love and the kind where the snow piles up very quickly indeed. By the evening I measured 45cm of snowfall around my place with lots more being forecast to fall overnight. So it was a bit of a surprise this morning that there was only an additional 12cm to record overnight. Perhaps the wind had something to do with it. But that's what I measured anyway, so the total for this report is 57cm of fresh snowfall since my report yesterday. (By the way, don't expect official snow depths to increase by anything like that much. There are various reasons including snow compacting, grooming, etc. We'll make a comment on that kind of thing in an upcoming report). Here is how much fresh snowfall ski resorts are reporting this morning: Ishiuchi Maruyama: 40cm Maiko Snow Resort: not saying yet Right now it is snowing lightly and at times it has felt like it might even stop. But the forecast remains snowfall through until Saturday and perhaps beyond that. At least on and off, and hopefully heavily at times. So we should still be getting a lot more from this storm. It is very cold this morning and there is a moderate wind blowing. The wind is affecting operations at Kagura where only the Mitsumata area is going to be opening today. And I just noticed that Maiko are not opening their Gondola and top Okusoeji lifts as scheduled due to wind. Other ski resorts in Yuzawa appear to be opening as planned, but do keep an eye on the wind if you plan to be out. [Update: Kagura open up until Kagura Number 1 pair lift as well as Mitsumata] One thing is for sure: once this snow storm moves on and things calm down again, conditions should be transformed out on the mountains. --- Ski resorts in Yuzawa: GALA Yuzawa - 240cm Iwappara - 150cm Kagura - Only the Mitsumata area will be open today (Thursday) - Kagura area: 330cm - Mitsumata area: 230cm - Tashiro area: 280cm Kandatsu Kogen - 230cm Naeba - 220cm (base) NASPA Ski Garden - 175cm Yuzawa Kogen - Top: 200cm - Base: 150cm Yuzawa Park - 140cm Yuzawa Nakazato - 170cm --- Ski resorts in Minamiuonuma (just to the north of Yuzawa): Ishiuchi Maruyama - 180cm Joetsu Kokusai - 190cm Maiko Snow Resort - Top: 200cm - Base: 110cm Muikamachi Hakkaisan - Closed on Wednesdays until 14th March - 250cm Yuzawa Now 2017-2018 season Data as of Thursday 25th January 2018 Total snowfall at base so far 533cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 32 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 57cm (25th January) November 2017 snowfall 14cm reported on 3 days December 2017 snowfall 277cm reported on 16 days January 2018 snowfall 242cm reported on 13 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 60cm Snowfall at base this season 593cm Posted on Friday 26th January 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. Snow, snow and more snow. It has been snowing since my report yesterday. This morning I have measured a further 60cm of snow since then. And that is a 'lower end' kind of measurement. It has been windy and it is one of those days when there will be more and less in places - actually I'm guessing more 'more' than less. The difficulty of precise numbers aside, we are seeing very large amounts of snow at the moment. It's the kind that even locals have problems dealing with; and that's saying something! Here is what ski resorts are reporting: - Kagura are reporting 40cm of fresh snowfall. - Maiko Snow Resort are reporting '40+cm' of fresh snowfall. - Ishiuchi Maruyama is reporting 60cm of fresh snowfall. On days like this, we often feel that resorts try not to scare people with numbers that are too big. Yes, believe it or not, some people don't get excited by these big numbers! Yesterday only part of Kagura got to open and Maiko was resting their gondola and top area; this was due to wind conditions. It remains very cold this morning and there's a moderate wind blowing around still, but the Kagura and Maiko resorts appear to be opening this morning. There may well be some lift delays though as staff cope with all this snow. The forecast doesn't show the snow letting up today or tomorrow, with some forecasts show a break in the snow on Sunday for a while but generally winter conditions continuing into next week. There's going to be a lot of people itching to get out and play in all this snow once things calm down. If you can't wait for that, just be warm and be safe! --- Ski resorts in Yuzawa: GALA Yuzawa - 270cm Iwappara - 210cm Kagura - Only the Mitsumata area will be open today (Thursday) - Kagura area: 330cm - Mitsumata area: 230cm - Tashiro area: 280cm Kandatsu Kogen - 245cm Naeba - 240cm (base) NASPA Ski Garden - 210cm Yuzawa Kogen - Top: 230cm - Base: 180cm Yuzawa Park - 160cm Yuzawa Nakazato - 195cm --- Ski resorts in Minamiuonuma (just to the north of Yuzawa): Ishiuchi Maruyama - 280cm Joetsu Kokusai - 290cm Maiko Snow Resort - Top: 260cm - Base: 180cm Muikamachi Hakkaisan - Closed on Wednesdays until 14th March - 280cm Yuzawa Now 2017-2018 season Data as of Friday 26th January 2018 Total snowfall at base so far 593cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 33 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 60cm (26th January) November 2017 snowfall 14cm reported on 3 days December 2017 snowfall 277cm reported on 16 days January 2018 snowfall 302cm reported on 14 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. - Yuzawa Now: Saturday 27th January 2018
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 32cm Snowfall at base this season 625cm Posted on Saturday 27th January 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. The snow hasn't stopped yet! There were a few times during the day yesterday when it eased off, only to come back. Result? I have measured another 32cm of snow on the ground. That means that I have measured over 1.5m of snowfall over the last 4-5 days! Locals are getting tired having to 'deal' with it all, but I'm sure generally happy that we have been blessed with all this snow. It's good for now and for later on in the season. So here is what ski resorts are reporting this morning. - Kagura is reporting 20-30cm of fresh snowfall (which kind of seems low...) - Maiko Snow Resort is reporting 20cm of fresh snowfall - Ishiuchi Maruyama is reporting 40cm of fresh snowfall So yes, it is still snowing this morning and it is still quite windy. It is still cold as well. When is this going to stop? Well, perhaps tomorrow will see an end to the snow falling and it will start being not quite as cold as it has been; so it looks like today should be the tail end of this huge delivery of snow. Conditions today should be great but with the continued snow, cold and limited visibility... it won't be everyone's cup of tea. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. It was snow and mid-winter conditions through the day yesterday once again and light snow was falling when I got up earlier on this morning... but it has eased off now and is just cloudy with signs of a possible clear up. Here is how much snow is being reported from around the ski resorts: Kagura (main): 10cm Kagura (Mitsumata): 0cm (?!) Kagura (Tashiro): 10cm Maiko Snow Resort: 10-15cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 20cm I have moved 16cm of snow off my measuring point since the report yesterday morning (most of that when I cleared it yesterday evening). So right now it is generally cloudy but like I said there are signs that the cloud might break and we may be treated to some clearer skies. With all the snow over the last few days, conditions should be excellent this morning - wherever you choose to ski or board. We might actually get some more snow tomorrow too. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 3cm Snowfall at base this season 644cm Posted on Monday 29th January 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Get to enjoy yesterday? I got to spend a few hours at Kagura where the snow was really great. Came back and saw that the snow level down by my house had reduced by over 15cm, which surprised me. It wasn't as cold as it had been but wasn't particularly warm either. Anyway... a quick look around town and the popular ski resorts seemed busy. It was a fine day weather wise. Not deep blue skies - more like an overcast kind of sunny, with a bit more cloud at times. And this morning the snow is back and I have 3cm to report. Kagura and Ishiuchi Maruyama are both reporting 5cm of fresh snowfall; Naeba is reporting 5-10cm; and Maiko Snow Resort is reporting 2-5cm. It is snowing as I write this and if the forecasts are correct we can expect snow through today and tomorrow. Temperatures here in town should peak at around 2-3C later on today. The weekend crowds will have dispersed and so it should be a good day to be out again I would say. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. A generally fine day yesterday with lots of cloud around but a few spells of sunshine and blue sky too added into the mix. And this morning... it's colder and snowing once again! There's some nice big flakes coming down at the moment, and I am measuring nearly 25cm of fresh on the ground. Kagura (all areas) are reporting 20cm of fresh snowfall. Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 30cm. Yuzawa Kogen are reporting 30cm. (It's nice to see them reporting fresh snowfall number this morning - though the snow depth numbers haven't moved!) Snow is forecast to be falling through the day, easing off by later this afternoon. I reckon tomorrow should be good. The forecasts are either cloudy or sun - might it be clear and sunny? I think there's a decent chance that it may be. Local forecasts have more light snow lined up beyond that until the weekend, but I wouldn't expect it to be major snow like we have had over the last week. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 15cm Snowfall at base this season 683cm Posted on Wednesday 31st January 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. So we got more snow yesterday morning and it gradually eased off during the day. By evening there were clearer skies, and this morning we have beautiful clear skies over Yuzawa. It looks like there's some wind out there, but not enough to affect resort operations and otherwise it should be an excellent morning. (While the forecast on our site is spot on, some local forecasts have 'cloud' for this morning and then snow again by late afternoon; though they are certainly wrong with the former part of that! The clouds seem to be lingering over the northern part of Minamiuonuma, but leaving our region out for now). Maiko Snow Resort aren't reporting any fresh snow, but that's 'from last night'... we got snow during the day which is what I am recording below. I don't have any early numbers from Kagura or Ishiuchi Maruyama either this morning. We are expecting possibly clearer and calmer weather conditions tomorrow and Friday too, with snow likely to return from the weekend. The last week has seen a very large amount of snow arrive which has really built up the base. What would be great now is regular topups with some days like today dotted in between! --- Ski resorts in Yuzawa: GALA Yuzawa - 330cm Iwappara - 235cm Kagura - Kagura area: 350cm - Mitsumata area: 250cm - Tashiro area: 300cm Kandatsu Kogen - 255cm Naeba - 240cm (base) NASPA Ski Garden - 260cm Yuzawa Kogen - Top: 280cm - Base: 230cm Yuzawa Park - 190cm Yuzawa Nakazato - 200cm --- Ski resorts in Minamiuonuma (just to the north of Yuzawa): Ishiuchi Maruyama - 320cm Joetsu Kokusai - 310cm Maiko Snow Resort - Top: 270cm - Base: 190cm Muikamachi Hakkaisan - Closed on Wednesdays until 14th March - 340cm Yuzawa Now 2017-2018 season Data as of Wednesday 31st January 2018 Total snowfall at base so far 683cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 38 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 60cm (26th January) November 2017 snowfall 14cm reported on 3 days December 2017 snowfall 277cm reported on 16 days January 2018 snowfall 392cm reported on 19 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. - Yuzawa Now: Friday 2nd February 2018
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 4cm Snowfall at base this season 687cm Posted on Friday 2nd February 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday remained cloudy for the day, getting a bit brighter at times but never really clearing up. And there was some snowfall overnight too. Kagura and Maiko Snow Resort are this morning reporting 5cm across their areas overnight. I am measuring 4cm on the ground. It's a very cloudy start to the day but there are early signs of some blue sky appearing and probably a good chance that it will clear up more than it did yesterday. Maybe even be sunny. Let's see. Expect sunshine tomorrow morning to be followed by a return to snowfall by Sunday. --- We thought it would be a good time to look over the season so far and see how the Yuzawa 2017/2018 season is shaping up compared with previous recent seasons. The numbers I am mentioning here can all be found at the bottom of the Yuzawa Now report and they are on all the archive reports too. More comparisons and graphs can also be found by looking at the ‘Snowfall Analysis’ page. Click on the blue tab at the top of this page to see that. And please remember, these numbers come from base and there is usually more - sometimes much more - snow falling at higher elevations. This is the amount of snowfall that we have observed here at town level in Yuzawa over the past six seasons: December 2017: 277cm December 2016: 144cm December 2015: 92cm December 2014: 559cm December 2013: 131cm December 2012: 217cm December 2017 was pretty good, with much more than in the slow-starting two previous seasons. It’s going to take a very special year to beat the somewhat crazy December 2014 though! January 2018: 392cm January 2017: 470cm January 2016: 143cm January 2015: 420cm January 2014: 297cm January 2013: 254cm We had a rather dry (and unfortunately sometimes wet!) spell in the middle part of January 2018. There were stretches of no snowfall - or only very slight snowfall - on either side of the 23cm that was recorded on the 14th January. Some regular and at times heavy snowfall in the last week of January really rescued the numbers for the month though, and we enjoyed some pleasing Yuzawa-like snowfall around 25th-26th January. The end result was a decent showing for the months total with close on 4m of snowfall. 17/18 season total observed snowfall until the end of January 2018: 683cm 16/17 season total observed snowfall until the end of January 2018: 883cm 15/16 season total observed snowfall until the end of January 2018: 386cm 14/15 season total observed snowfall until the end of January 2018: 1207cm 13/14 season total observed snowfall until the end of January 2018: 637cm 12/13 season total observed snowfall until the end of January 2018: 717cm So up until the end of January 2018, our Yuzawa Now reports have observed just under 7m of snowfall for the season so far. That is not as much as last season at the same point (or that rather special 2014/2015 season), but it is certainly more than 2015/2016 and a comparable amount with what we observed during the 2013/2014 and 2012/2013 seasons. Looking ahead, what can we expect from February? Over the last 5 seasons we have recorded between 151cm and 267cm; that averages out at 217cm. February 2017: 267cm February 2016: 151cm February 2015: 228cm February 2014: 204cm February 2013: 238cm We’ll have to see how this middle part of the season shapes up. Like last season or more would be good! --- Ski resorts in Yuzawa: Checked and updated every morning. - Yuzawa Now: Monday 5th February 2018
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 24cm Snowfall at base this season 711cm Posted on Monday 5th February 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Clouds moved in over Yuzawa during the day yesterday but it remained generally fine for the most part - with snow starting to fall in places while lifts were still moving. And this morning we have a nice surprise - a decent amount of snow and (for now) sunny skies. Here is what is being reported by the ski resorts: Kagura (main): 50cm Kagura (Mitsumata): 40cm Kagura (Tashiro): 40cm Maiko Snow Resort: 50cm Big numbers, can't say I was expecting that. I don't have quite such impressive numbers to report, measuring 24cm; still a very decent number and first tracks should be great this morning. So right now the sun is out and there are clear skies again over the region. The snow clouds are currently to the north of us and appear to be heading this way and we do have snow forecast for the day so perhaps things are going to change quite quickly this morning. I have to get the report up now though so can't wait to see how things change over the coming hour. I'll let you know how it went in my report tomorrow morning. --- Ski resorts in Yuzawa: Checked and updated every morning. - Yuzawa Now: Tuesday 6th February 2018
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 3cm Snowfall at base this season 714cm Posted on Tuesday 6th February 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday the clouds did move back over Yuzawa and we did get some snow falling at times (and overnight) - though nothing significant. You might be thinking that I have heavy snowfall to report this morning - with news of that in the Hokuriku region on the TV News last night... but that's not the case. The sun is out and actually since early morning we have increasing amounts of blue sky appearing over the town. For now it is a cold start and partly cloudy. The snow clouds are lingering to the north of us, moving from the west and missing our region for now. You might remember a similar pattern happened before a few weeks ago... Kagura are reporting 5cm of fresh snow and I can report just 3cm. Will the clouds move back to our area today and tomorrow (as forecast)? In the meantime, it should be another very nice morning to be out there! --- Ski resorts in Yuzawa: Checked and updated every morning.
