Snow is getting fairly thin in places, but still a decent amount of the hill is open. Yesterday was generally cloudy and windy - enough to stop the gondola from before lunchtime. And then we had this snow overnight. At the start of the day we have some cloud, some blue sky and the sun breaking through in places. The latest Zao Now report can be found here. Good morning from Zao. As announced yesterday, today (Friday 24th April) is the last day of the ski/snowboard season here in Zao. The original plan was to continue until 6th May, but an early closing announcement seemed increasingly inevitable in the last few weeks. There just wasn't enough snow and stretching what we had out until May was, in the end, impossible. We could enjoy some fine conditions, of course, and there were a lot of people around. (Sometimes too many?! Discuss). January was the peak month in terms of snowfall, with snow reported at base on 23 days. After that, like much of Japan, it felt like the full-on mid-winter mood eased off somewhat and fresh snowfall started to became scarcer. Zao is, of course, a popular destination throughout the year - and for good reason. The Zao Echo Line road connecting us with Miyagi Prefecture re-opens today, so we'll soon be in 'Green Season' mode. Let's hope that 2026-2027 brings us big snow. See you in November! The latest Zao Now report can be found here. Hello from a sunny and blue sky Zao. Tomorrow might be cloudy with clearer weather currently expected again come Sunday and Monday. The ski slope will remain open basically as long as it can. Snow depth is now officially down to 40-45cm and so if temps remain warm it seems unlikely we will make it to Golden Week at the end of the month. Still, no kind of announcement from the ski area at this point. Outside I can see some blue sky and quite a lot of cloud. There appears to be some stronger winds as well with all of the top lifts (and gondola at Village) on hold at the start of operations this morning. Only the gondola is opening at Hanazono this morning. Wind might continue to be pesky over the coming several days and we can probably expect some rain tomorrow and perhaps even a bit more snow on the mountain on Saturday if we are lucky. There are only several more days left for Niseko Hanazono and Niseko Village - they both plan to be open until Sunday. It might not be prime mid-winter fluffy light snow, but it's definitely snow and most welcome. Hanazono is reporting 25cm of fresh snowfall at base, which seems... a lot. I can't help but think the person in charge there was perhaps getting a bit overly excited, especially when they also posted less snow up top. Hirafu is going with 20cm and Annupuri reports 7cm. The Avalanche Report tells us 15cm. My own measurement is 12cm. I think it's say to say that we can probably expect up to around 20cm by the side of the groomers. Overall, nice. Also, with snowfall on the forecasts across the coming week, my positive feeling levels are having a bit of a 'level up'. Annupuri 1100m: -3.9°C, NNW 1.2m/s. Annupuri 1150m: -5°C, NNW 0.6m/s, good visibility. Niseko Village 1000m: -3.1°C, ENE 0.4m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: NNE 5.1m/s, good visibility. Hanazono 800m: -1.6°C, light wind, good visibility, 15cm snowfall. Sea of Japan Benkei Cape light wind. Kamui Cape light wind, 1018hPa, wave height unknown. The atmospheric pressure gradient is widespread, with calm conditions over both the sea and the mountains. 15cm of wet snow fell till the morning, with continued warm air influx. Avalanches up to 30cm are possible on 40-degree slopes. Though slow-moving, danger exists if buried in valley bottoms; be cautious. Similarly, be alert for wet snow avalanches on-course side-banks of connecting routes and under lift lines. Recent warm air influx has softened snow even below 1000m elevation, increasing the risk of full-depth avalanches. Avoid staying in gully bottoms to prevent accidents. Gates 2, 3, and 5 will be open. Other gates are undecided; follow the patrol’s instructions. Hirafu continues ongoing training, including CPR, in collaboration with the local Sanroku fire department. If out-of-bounds skiing, not approved by the Forestry Agency, is permitted, enhancing patrol resources is essential. The Niseko Rules are implemented out of necessity to prevent accidents, learned from past high accident rates, and were not created for tourism promotion. Do not intentionally cut ropes or nets. Respect the Niseko Rules. It is a fine morning here with a fair amount of cloud around but blue sky and the sun shining through in places. Fine weather is expected today and tomorrow. Fairly cold early on with temps venturing into low positive numbers during the day. My friend has a Playstation 5 thingy and apparently is currently enjoying a game called Ghosts of Yotei. Do not duck the ropes. Do not ski in strictly prohibited areas. In the south-facing prohibited zones, large-scale avalanches from deep layers or the ground surface will become increasingly likely. Gate 11 at Mizuno-no-sawa is closed due to a large-scale rockfall-induced avalanche from the right bank sidewall, which has heightened the overall avalanche risk in the valley. This year has seen significant temperature fluctuations, and the freezing of layers due to cold air inflow is more prominent than usual. If rapid melting occurs with future temperature rises, the possibility of a large-scale avalanche will increase sharply. From March 10th onward, do not ski in valleys that serve as avalanche paths, such as Kozan-no-sawa, Annupuri Osawa, and Mikaeri-no-sawa. These avalanches occur suddenly and can sweep the entire valley floor. Due to the heavy snowfall in Niseko, multiple full-depth glide avalanches with crowns exceeding 6m have occurred in the past, scouring the terrain and damaging the forest. The mountain is heavily tracked out. Beware of falls, tree collisions, and bone fractures. Watch out for cracks; they are often invisible from above. Is your beacon on? If you have one, it can save your companions’ lives. While not mandatory, carrying one is highly recommended. It definitely feels colder again this morning and some light snow falling now. We have had several+ cm of snow since yesterday (Hirafu reporting up to 10cm) and all lifts appear to be opening this morning. There should be some fresh tracks to find this morning especially with the snowdrift development mentioned below. Forecasts generally seem to indicate some sunshine tomorrow and a colder end to the month with maybe a bit more snow. We shouldn't expect anything major, though. ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -6°C, 7cm new snow, calm. Moiwa 800m -9.3°C, WNW 6.2m/s, 50cm snowdrift development. Annupuri 1100m: -11.9°C, W 6.6m/s. Niseko Village 1000m: -10.8°C, WSW 3.7m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -11.5°C, N 1.7m/s. Westerly winds remain strong in high elevation, with gusts reaching 20m/s around 2:00 AM, as the northern edge of a high-pressure system is passing nearby. Although new snowfall is only 5-10cm, wind slabs have developed on eastern slopes, reaching up to 60cm on knolls at 800m. These slabs are prone to fracturing under stimulation this morning; the avalanche risk for the morning is relatively high. Gates are expected to open with a slight delay. Follow the instructions of the ski patrol. Areas above 700m have been reset by wind-blown snow, but you will still hit the firm bottom. Skiing out of control leads to falls and broken bones. Always ride within your limits. Be alert for shallow surface avalanches on gully sidewalls where snowdrifts have accumulated. This information is issued to prevent avalanche accidents within the resort and its surroundings. More than 50 people have died in avalanches in Europe and North America this year. Guides and leaders must not be overconfident in the knowledge they have acquired. If that knowledge is based on flawed assumptions, accidents will continue to happen.
