The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Clouds did indeed move over Yuzawa yesterday with light snow starting to fall in town by the afternoon. It was a bit wet at first but improved into the evening and there's 8cm to add to the report this morning. Kagura are reporting 10-20cm of fresh snowfall since yesterday; Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 15cm. Nice to see that fresh snow, though it does look likely we are going to need to make do with what we have for the next few days - until Monday actually, when Santa is due to bring fresh snowfall to the region according to the forecast. This morning there is more blue sky and sunshine to start the day off. A cold start to the day but it should be fairly mild by mid-afternoon. Ishiuchi Maruyama plans to be part open from tomorrow. They are planning on having 10 lifts operating and 13 courses open. And then NASPA Ski Garden and Iwappara will be opening from Friday. --- Currently open in Yuzawa (official snow depths where available): Wednesday 20th December 2017 GALA Yuzawa GALA Yuzawa opens for the season from this morning. 6 lifts are operating and 9 courses (Central and Northern Areas) are open. After the fine sunny weather of yesterday - the sun was out and when I went past the temperature reading by the side of the road in town it was saying +7C degrees. I recall we were expecting more of the sunny skies today... It hasn't started off that way though. I was woken up by the sound of water - it was automatic snow-melting sprinklers that were turned on; so it may well have been snowing but I can't see any evidence of that. A little later when I got up it was raining. Happily that has now stopped but the roads are wet. There is lots of grey cloud still around but hopefully a chance that things will clear up as the morning progresses. Today sees the small Ipponsugi ski hill in the central Yuzawa open as well as the Muikamachi Hakkaisan resort to the north in Minamiuonuma. The Dragondola lift that connects Naeba with the Tashiro part of Kagura opens from this morning. And in other Kagura news, their top Kagura Number 5 lift is set to start operating from 1st January. --- So, ski hills are now either partly or fully open with generally very good snow cover. The mild conditions that look set to continue through tomorrow though mean that the snow has gradually been reducing so we would like some more sustained snowfall to build those bases up. It still looks like snow should be falling again from Monday. Fingers crossed! The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa and Merry Christmas. I'd rather not have to report this morning because it's raining. And pretty heavily at times too overnight. You might notice that the official snow depth info from resorts have generally been going down over the last few days. The good news that I can give you is that it is snowing at higher elevations and the rain should turning into snow down to town sometime during the day today. And then snow is forecast over the next few days, so we should be on the receiving end of quite a lot in the coming days. We all know how quickly things can transform with a storm that lasts a few days; let's hope that what we are about to get is one of them. For today though - it's not very appealing out there and while lots of people around town now, I expect many will be put off and taking an onsen instead. If you are still keen to get out there, Kagura is only open up to the Number 1 romance lift and the Tashiro area is closed for the day due to the weather conditions. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. After that rain in the first part of the day yesterday, happily it turned into snow later on and this morning we have just under 10cm of fresh on the ground. Kagura are this morning reporting 2cm of fresh snow at Kagura, 10cm at Mitsumata and 20cm at Tashiro. My best guess is that there's a typo there and it was actually 20cm at Kagura too. Maiko Snow Resort just to the north of Yuzawa is reporting 10-20cm of fresh. More unexpected was the sunshine and clearer skies earlier on this morning, though it seems to gradually be clouding over again now and snow is still there on the forecast for the day. There is still regular snowfall on the forecast for the week, with perhaps the heaviest expected tonight and tomorrow. The third photo (below) for today is from Maiko (the first is GALA and the second is NASPA). So it should be a nice early morning with hopefully snow starting to fall again fairly soon. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. We are still enjoying a full-on traditional Yuzawa snow storm, I am happy to report. Having said that, there's probably less new snowfall to report than I thought there would be this morning with snow falling through the day yesterday and overnight. Still, there is a good new 40cm at our measuring point. I suspect strong winds blowing the fresh snow around wildly at times yesterday is affecting the number today... indeed, Kagura are reporting a large 50-80cm of fresh snow this morning. Here's the fresh snowfall numbers resorts are reporting this morning: Kagura - 80cm Kagura Mitsumata - 50cm Kagura Tashiro - 60cm Maiko Snow Resort - 30+cm There's lots of snow around town and even more on the slopes. It's what we love to see. I suspect that I will soon not need to be mentioning what is open and what is not open because we'll be getting to that 'all open' stage. The forecast seems to be saying that the peak of this particular batch of heavy snow has passed and things will be calming down as the day goes on. We still might be getting further snow though today and tomorrow with the chance of some sun over the weekend. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. More snow to report since yesterday. Kagura are reporting 15-20cm of fresh snowfall while Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 15cm; I can also add an observed 15cm to the reports. Things have generally calmed down somewhat since the peak of this snow and we have lots of cloud around at the moment. Snow could be falling any time during the day today and possibly tomorrow too. The next chance of much clearer skies and sunshine seems to be - appropriately enough - Sunday, but we're expecting snow once again from Monday. The heavy snowfall over the last few days has really given resorts - and visitors of course - what they want and need... a good base with regular snow falling on top. Long may that continue! Yuzawa is continuing to get busier now as the New Year weekend approaches. Unless noted below, all of the ski resorts in Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma are now pretty much open as normal and so we have slimmed down the information in the resort specific list below. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. More snow to report as we approach the end of 2017. Here is what the 'resorts that report' have reported this morning: Kagura: 40cm Kagura Mitsumata: 25cm Kagura Tashiro: 40cm Naeba: 30cm Maiko Snow Resort: 20cm And I am measuring 19cm myself. Nice. It has shaped up to be a really good end to the year, with an equally very good start to 2018 on the cards if the forecasts are correct. A pretty big contrast to how things were last season; in a good way! It's very cloudy and rather dark this morning with fog in places. Light snow perhaps during the day today and it looks like there is a very good chance of sunshine during the day tomorrow. It should be warming up a little tomorrow as well. Not to worry though as a return to colder temperatures and further decent snowfall is on the forecast from later on in the day on Monday. Early in January we'll take a look back at the season so far and also compare with the last few seasons. UPDATE: Unfortunately, the GALA Yuzawa resort has closed and some other lifts at other resorts may be affected by some fairly strong winds in higher areas this morning. --- Good morning from Yuzawa. And here we are on New Years Eve already. Time really does seem to just fly by, doesn't it. It has been a good end of the year though with the decent snowfall, helping to really get things kicking things off properly at resorts around the area. The popular slopes were really busy yesterday as is expected and today should be the same. There is just a bit of fresh cm of snow to report this morning (from yesterday, with 10cm being reported by Kagura). It is a chilly start but it's destined to be rather mild today. And while we are starting off with generally cloudy/overcast skies, sunshine is likely later on. It should be a good day to be out enjoying the snow. As I said it is likely to be a busy day today with people enjoying their last ride of the season. Here's a shout out and thank you to all the busy folk out there at the ski resorts and hotels, keeping it all going! Otsukaresama. The Southern Area of the GALA Yuzawa resort will be opening from this morning. There's often some nice deep snow over in that area and it always seems to be much quieter than the rest of the resort even on a busy day. And of course the top pair lift of Kagura should be opening for the season from tomorrow. Anyway I hope that you all enjoy New Years Eve and here's too a great 2018. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good news this morning! Yesterday it was snowing on and off during the day - clearer skies in places at times. The snow was a bit wet really down in town, but overnight we have more fresh snow on the ground around town. I am measuring 24cm. And here is what the ski resorts are reporting: Kagura: 20cm Kagura Mitsumata: 30cm Kagura Tashiro: 30cm Naeba: 20-30cm Maiko Snow Resort: 30cm So we can expect around 20-30cm of fresh snow out there on the slopes around town this morning. Light snow is falling at the moment, and it is expected to get heavier later on with a decent amount of snow due to fall overnight and through tomorrow; possibly with strong winds too. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. We have a lot of fresh snowfall to report to you this morning. Trying to get this out as early as possible, but there is a lot of information to gather and put together. Fresh snowfall numbers from the ski resorts themselves: Naeba: 30-50cm Maiko: 40cm Kagura areas: 60cm I am measuring 43cm, though I need to add that strong winds are blowing it around so there are snowdrifts and there'll be more/less in different places. I think that number is representative of about how much has fallen though. Unfortunately because of the strong winds this morning, GALA Yuzawa is closed today. The Kagura Area and Tashiro Area of the Kagura resort will also be closed - so it's just the Mitsumata area open there. The Gondola and top lifts at Maiko Snow Resort are also on hold at the start of the day. Other lifts at other resorts in the region may also be affected. So it's a bit wild out there. Check out the Yuzawa IC image below! If you are going to brave the conditions, go out prepared and take care. The heavy snow we are due to continue getting through today and into tomorrow though is most welcome. The fresh snowfall headlines: Kagura: 70cm Kagura Mitsumata: 30cm Kagura Tashiro: 50cm Naeba: 20cm Maiko Snow Resort: 40cm I have measured a fresh 28cm since yesterday morning down at town level. Summary - very nice top-up of snow from upper slopes down to base with really heavy snow up top. It is still snowing this morning. Heavier at times than others and the forecast shows things easing off later on today. Tomorrow is currently forecast to be cloudy with some forecasts showing a chance of sun. With all the fresh new snowfall out on the slopes, it should be a great day. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Snowfall for most of the day yesterday, apart from a period of clearer skies and a bit of sunshine. But fresh snow on the ground. I am measuring 12cm of since my report yesterday and here is what I am finding from around the resorts: Kagura (Main): 20cm Kagura (Mitsumata): 5cm Kagura (Tashiro): 20cm Maiko Snow Resort: 10cm This morning the snow has stopped and we are starting the day with cloud cover. Nearby regions are enjoying some clearer skies, so perhaps we will get some of that later on in the day. The snow might be back tomorrow though the forecasts don't tell us to expect too much. Temperatures are due to get a little higher on Monday and right now there's rain on the forecast. Not good, let's hope that doesn't happen. Before then though, we have got lots of fresh snowfall over the last few days and it should be very nice conditions out there for the upcoming weekend. Hope you can be here to enjoy it. Monday is a national holiday in Japan; it is likely going to be a very popular weekend.
