The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . I haven't been up there today - I'm actually in Nagano at the moment - but the Shibutoge lift still plans to be open through until Sunday... which will most definitely see the end of the 2013/2014 season. Generally fine conditions are forecast for the weekend if you so inclined! This is my last Shiga Kogen Now report for the season. The season started on Saturday 16th November 2013 with just the one lift moving at the Kumanoyu area. I make that 191 days of lift movement... over 6 months! That's some going. Of course it was a while before things got going and lots of the lifts in Shiga Kogen have long since stopped moving, but still - that's one long season. I have been reading the other Now report wrap ups for 13/14 and a fair few of them - at least the ones in this region of Honshu - ring a bell. It has been up and down and not much of the full on long-lasting blizzard conditions. Still, get the timing right and there were some excellent conditions to enjoy (or, get timing wrong and be disappointed!) Please do take a look through the archives of the reports... not only for 13/14 but for other seasons too. We already have a tentative opening date for 2014/2015 ----> Saturday 15th November. We need the snow to co-operate of course. Here's hoping for a classic kind of season next time round. Shiga Kogen is of course relatively cool during the hot summer months and a fine place to visit. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . The 2012/2013 season at Shiga Kogen is now finished, with the last lifts at Yokoteyama being the last yesterday afternoon. The long season is now over and it's a bit of downtime for many people here now as they properly switch into 'green season'. Which, for Shiga Kogen, mostly means hiking, trekking, leisurely walks taking in the scenery and relaxing in onsen. Anyway, that's it for the Shiga Kogen Now reports for this season. I hope you enjoyed following the reports over winter and we will of course be back in autumn when temperatures are dropping and the next winter season is approaching. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Hello from Shiga Kogen on this last day of the season. The Shiga Kogen ski season started (on 9th November 2022) and ended with that Number 4 lift and run at the Yokoteyama ski area. Considering the much-talked-about lower-than-average snowfall season, that's pretty impressive. It has been a curious season, and in many ways, it has been a return to something like normality after the bleaker backdrop of the covid years. Of course, there are still lots of masks around in Japan, but there are also more people everywhere (that's my guess rather than confirmed stats). And there were definitely more friendly visitors from overseas. It wasn't a bumper season in terms of snowfall, but that doesn't mean there wasn't good/great snow – I certainly got to enjoy a fair amount of that, and I hope you did too if you visited. Shiga Kogen benefits from being high up, so it is colder and less susceptible to rain when it is doing that lower down in the valleys. Still, let's hope that we get more snow next year. We always want more, don't we?! This is the last Shiga Kogen report of the season. There’s lots to do and see in Shiga Kogen when there is no snow, even if it is just escaping the unbearable summer heat of the cities! I'll be back with you in November with any pre-season news. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . We are about to start the famous Golden Week holiday period. Latest forecasts seem to show some variable conditions (possibly even some light snow in higher places!) but hopefully some nice weather too. Tomorrow should be fine and sunny and perhaps Sunday, too. The remaining ski areas will probably get quite busy on the main holidays. The Route 292 road connecting Shiga Kogen with Gunma is now open. However, the section connecting to Kusatsu is closed due to a snow slide. You can still access Shiga Kogen via Gunma, but for the time being need to use the Manza Onsen Highway (toll) road. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . I think it is worth mentioning that yesterday morning Okushiga Kogen (ski area) was reporting up to 50cm of snow in some wind-blown places. There was a lot of fresh out there. Lots of cloud around still this morning, but there is also some blue sky and the sun is breaking through at times too. Even if it gets sunny, though, it should remain cold. A generally calm weekend is expected and we should be back to snow from around Tuesday onwards. The coming week is looking promising in terms of potential snow. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Good morning from Shiga Kogen. Some neighbouring regions to the north and east have enjoyed some really heavy snowfall numbers. We have some decent numbers too, but maybe not quite as much. Variable amounts depending on where you are, I'd say around 15cm and upwards. Early morning Yakebitaiyama was reporting 30cm; over there along with Okushiga seem to be where most has fallen. It is actually quite bright at the moment, with light snow still falling in places. After a break from this snowfall over the weekend, we should be getting more fresh early week. We've had some rather complicated weather going on recently, but perhaps we are heading back into a prolonged spell of good old mid-winter goodness. I'd say we have received 5-15cm across the region, with my measurement of 12cm. It is still snowing and more is due today and tonight, perhaps heavy at times. It is snowing in some places (Okushiga Kogen), but still kind of sunny in others. Varied weather. But the snow clouds are certainly due to move in and take control. And maybe for a few days with wind also possibly being a factor. A complete reset in time for the weekend sounds like a great plan. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . We have some fresh snow. Not massive amounts, but enough to cover up hard crusts, at least for a while. Yakebitaiyama were reporting 15cm very early morning and Okushiga Kogen is also reporting 15cm. With more snow coming around Wednesday - for much of the Japanese mountains it seems - I am hopeful this is the start of our journey back into mid-winter weather conditions! The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Hello from Shiga Kogen. We do have some light snow falling in places this morning, though it is generally quite bright too. It's not the kind that will add up to cm, but perhaps we'll get some of that kind overnight. As with other nearby regions, there is what looks like good snowfall incoming around mid-week. A fresh layer of soft snow would be most welcome (and sustained colder conditions too; it does feel colder this morning).
