The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . After a fine day of weather yesterday, we are being treated to more fresh snow this morning in Nozawa. Nozawa resort is reporting 18-20cm across the mountain. The way things are going, it's as if nature has mixed up February and March this season! No complaints... we just need to make the most of the fine first third of March we have had. So yes, new snow to play in this morning again which should fill in those weekend tracks, and light snow has been falling from the skies. Limited visibility though on upper parts of the resort and moderate winds I hear, but lifts seem to be open as planned. We are expecting the snow clouds to be over Nozawa through the day and perhaps clear up tonight but very likely tomorrow it will start off cloudy. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Another thin sprinkling of snow since yesterday again here in Nozawa - the resort is reporting just a few cm up on Yamabiko, 1cm on lower slopes. Light snow falling early in the morning but probably going to ease off later. Currently 0 degrees in the village. Tomorrow we expect clear weather conditions though it shouldn't warm up too much, certainly not like what we had last year. Then it's back to snowfall on Wednesday, though there's a good chance that it will at least start off as rain in the village. Straight to snow up on the mountain though hopefully. From Thursday onwards temperatures should be back into negative numbers. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Happily, it turned into snow soon enough and we were left with a few new cm by the end of the day. More snow overnight in Nozawa with around 10cm across the mountain, from base areas to top so there should be a nice new layer for those making up for first tracks this morning. I'm glad to report a return to colder conditions as well which is of course great. The light snow early this morning is due to clear up leaving us with a mostly cloudy day maybe some sun. Tomorrow should start off sunny as well. Back to a Monday weekday, so less busy once again. No snow overnight but there was 3-7cm of snow during the day yesterday on the slopes. Cold start but warmer conditions later and similar tomorrow, albeit with more chance of cloud. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning and Happy Christmas from Nozawa Onsen. For the most part it's just a normal day here, so there's no mad Christmas Rush on the slopes - though perhaps more actually more than just any other Wednesday. For those of you getting out onto the slopes of Nozawa on Christmas Day this year, you should find up to 15cm of fresh snow to play in. The resort is reporting 10cm at base and top courses, 15cm on fresh snowfall in the Uenotaira area. That pushes Yamabiko up to an official snow depth of 190cm... nearly hitting 2m. It's a chilly -7 degrees up there, and more like -2C here in the village as of 8:30am. For the moment snow is not falling and it is just cloudy. Clearer skies are still forecast for later on today so we may be on for a clear up. Tomorrow should start off cloudy but again we might get to see the sun, and it should be milder than it is today. Next snowfall still scheduled for overnight tomorrow night into Friday, and it's looking like it should get really cold for the weekend. Have fun out there! The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . After the great haul yesterday, just another slight topup to report this morning with 3cm being reported across the mountain. Add a few more for what we got since the report yesterday and you'll get an idea of the new layer out there. For those of you who like the famous Schneider Course at Nozawa... well, it's open now. Let's mogul Great out there yesterday. It was fabulous to re-acquaint with Skyline. Personally I prefer that run in particular mid-week so that a good head of speed can be built up. Not quite as easy on a busy weekend! Resort news! On 31st December, there'll be a special long nighta and some events going on at the resort - specificially on the Nagasaka course area. Nighta will be open until 11:30pm. There'll be fireworks. There'll be sake. There'll be hot wine, apparently. The latter ones from 11pm until midnight. The fireworks just as we get into the New Year. Should be fun and no doubt the parties will continue elsewhere after that. Remember though - don't slide drunk! Looks like it is going to be a sunny Christmas day. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Nozawa. A bit more snowfall this morning with between 5-7cm reported on the upper parts of the resort and just a bit down below too. It is cloudy at the moment with light snow trying to fall still at higher elevations. Hoping for more snow today and tomorrow. 11am this morning is the Grand Opening "Opening Festival" for Nozawa Onsen resort, to be held near the top Nagasaka Gondola Station. There should be some sake on offer and no doubt some other goodies and probably your change to shake hands with the Nozawa Onsen mascot character. Perhaps worth a look if you are up there when it happens. There are more lifts and courses open from this morning and it's now easier to say which aren't moving than which are moving. See below for the latest there. Courses wise, the area to the right of the Nagasaka Gondola as you look from the village - including the Skyline course - is not yet open. Other than that, most of the main runs of the resort are open from today. Today is the first day of the three day long weekend in Japan and so it should be quite busy today and tomorrow especially. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . It's a cold morning in Nozawa Onsen, with the resort reporting a samui! -11 degrees up on the Yamabiko runs as of 7:20am. More like -2 down near base, but as most of us will be taking the lifts higher up it's definitely a day to wrap up and be ready for cold. There's a new layer or snow to play in as well today - 5cm at base and lower slopes and 10cm on upper slopes, bringing Yamabiko close to 2m - but there are breaks in the cloud and more blue sky to be seen and it looks like it's clearing up. The local forecast is for snow throughout the day today, so maybe it's just a break and the snow clouds will be back but it doesn't look like that just now. Snow and the chance of sun is forecast for tomorrow, with the snow bit forecast to be weaker than today. It's still looking like New Years Day is going to bring decent snowfall and possibly strong winds. There have been lots of people arriving in Nozawa this morning and it should be a busy day, and that will apply for each day now through into New Year. Nozawa is a small compact village and so if you are here staying just ask the people at your accommodation about ideas on where to go to celebrate. And don't forget to try out the onsen in the village, always a treat. Anyway, enough talk. I must get onto that Gondola to check out what Nozawa has in store today! The snow should be good up there. We have been gifted with 10cm of fresh snow on the top Yamabiko area and the sun is out for opening. It was cold overnight but will be warming up today to maybe 5 degrees - at the moment is it +3. It was -3 degrees at Yamabiko as of 10am. There's hardly any wind so it's all calm for the big day. Snow has fallen overnight here in the village as well - not a huge amount, but enough to give make everything look nice and white again and get everyone totally in the mood. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . And so here we are - the last day of the season in Nozawa. Looking at the schedules, it seems the last possible lift to ride would be the Skyline connecting pair which should be closing at 4:20pm, but I might be temped to just get up to the top of Yamabiko at 4pm and make that last run down from there. The sun is out to celebrate as well - celebrate perhaps seems a strange word, but while it's kind of sad for the season to be ending, we can't stop the seasons of course and we can reflect on another fine season here in Nozawa. It has been another long season too, with plenty of awesome powder days, some warmer bits here and there - hey March, I'm talking about you in particular - but almost always tons of fun and a great atmosphere to boot. Hopefully there will have once again been lots of very happy visitors coming to Nozawa for the first time and going back home and telling everyone about this very charming village. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 1591cm Posted on Friday 4th April 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Friday before the last weekend for most resorts: time for a bit of a recap on the 2024-25 season. Snow was the big theme for this season; it just kept falling. I was looking over my snow plowing records, and realized that there were 51 days where the machines had to run (and a few where I could have, but when it was less than 20cm, well, sometimes you let nature do the clearing. Lower carbon footprint and all that). The big snows in terms of depth were in December and February, but there were plenty of days in January where there was a good snowfall, too. It’s staying cold, too, so while the snow walls have shrunk somewhat and it’s easier to drive without inching up to intersections to peek around the corner, there’s still a lot of snow out there. In short, excellent snowshoeing lies ahead (and it looks like sunny and warm weather tomorrow). The elephant in the room (and, don’t forget, we did have elephants resident in this area until about 20,000 years ago) is the big potential development that is starting at Madarao and Suginohara. I know many readers have voiced concerns, and we do worry about the area losing the Japanese-ness that is a big draw for Myoko. No offense to our friends in Niseko and Hakuba, but compared to those places, Myoko is more of a centralized town, with a deep history in Japan, and as one of the earliest resorts in the country. Things have changed; we’re already at a point where most restaurants in town aren’t Japanese owned, as are many/most of the hotels, especially in Akakura. The Japan Times recently ran a good article on the potential changes in Myoko, with locals expressing their concerns about the way things have changed, as well as about the future. It’s funny for those of us who actually live here year-round (and it’s nearly 30 years now for your writer), as things “go back to normal” about this time of year. We start to see our neighbors again, since we’d always be stuck in cycles of plowing and staying indoors for the winter anyway. Spring comes, the cherries bloom, and local people (not the herds of young foreign ski instructors) start to be visible on the streets again. And, the way things are going globally right now, who knows what lies ahead? What would a big recession mean? Ahhh.... hey, this is a beautiful place. Tough to live in (snow throwers ain't cheap, and you can't NOT plow when you get 60cm), really not the best summer vacation location (we are a rain forest, really). The people still are nice, it IS Japan (no offensive Antipodeans, but I want to live in Japan, not Australia. Nice to have you visit, though!). Good food, too... Ikenotaira Onsen Alpen Blick has decided to extend its season to this weekend; Seki Onsen is also open, although it’s a little unclear what happens after that. There’s still a lot of snow on the ground, so skiing should still be very good!
