Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 137cm Posted on Sunday 6th January 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . After a run of very cold days yesterday was somewhat milder, but cold enough on upper areas to keep the snow in decent conditions. This morning there are just a few numbers to report from the resorts: Cortina: 10cm (base), 15cm (top) Happo-one: 5cm top of Riesen quad Bit of snow falling yesterday evening through the morning but there some wind blowing it about and so there is a small cm number to report from around some base areas. Was walking in some It is cloudy this morning but there's a few breaks in the clouds opening up with a bit of blue sky to see in places. While all ski resorts are open and there's some good snow to be found, we really could be doing with a few more serious snow storms to bring us some deeper numbers (and importantly, deeper conditions). With that wish in mind, Tuesday through Wednesday might well bring us that. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 132cm Posted on Saturday 5th January 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . It doesn't feel as cold this morning and the temperatures being reported by the ski resorts reflect that. Just -3 from Happo and milder than that being reported by 47/Goryu. Anyway there has been a bit of snowfall this morning and some resorts are reporting some numbers - Happo-one saying there's 6cm by the top of the Riesen quad and Cortina are reporting 2cm at base and up top. Fingers crossed we get some fresh through the day tomorrow, though I wouldn't expect anything significant. I'd honestly prefect colder conditions to keep the snow we got in good condition. After today, the next decent snowfall looks set to be with us around Tuesday/Wednesday. Good news from Hakuba 47 - the Osaru part of their Tree Riding Zone is opening from today. Yey! Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 16cm Snowfall at base this season 128cm Posted on Wednesday 2nd January 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Enjoy your New Years Day? I was out at 47 with a group of folk from Australia and New Zealand in the afternoon. Light snow with a little wind and while there wasn't a fresh layer for the new year it was keeping cold and we enjoyed some good conditions. And this morning I have news of a fresh layer on the mountain. First up, this is how much snowfall the ski resorts around the valley are reporting: Hakuba Goryu: 10-15cm (base-top) Hakuba 47: about 25cm (top) Hakuba Cortina: 10cm (base-top) Hakuba Happo-one 20cm (Adam gondola top) Hakuba Iwatake: 10cm (base-top) So there is some nice fresh powder to enjoy this morning. We might get some more during the day today and tomorrow with clearer skies currently forecast for Friday with a return to snow again by Saturday. That sounds like a decent weather pattern to me. I think I'm going to check out Happo today. Oh yes, now that ski resorts are mostly or fully open I have tried to simplify the resort-specific information (below). I have also added night time operation information at the bottom of the report. - Niseko Now: Tuesday 18th November 2025
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 9cm Snowfall at base this season 17cm Good morning from a snowy Niseko, although as I type out this report, it is actually quite bright. The snow is still falling lightly and around 10cm in base areas. More and less in places. Those of you keeping up with news from Japan will have no doubt heard about the two types of 'invasion' that are being endlessly 'discussed' on the telly and across 'social media'. Yes, I talk of bears and foreigners. Some of you have actually written in asking about those things. My remit is, of course, snow and weather reports, but I do have thoughts on those, and I'll leave them for later. Those of you who have followed my words over the years will probably be aware of my increasing distaste for all (most) things 'social media'. That has only increased again this year. That means I thankfully manage to avoid much of the negativity that seems to live and prosper in that world. However, I still can't be 100% blind to what is being said, even in less extreme environs. Anyway, please don't worry: I'm not going to bang on about those kinds of things too much. Maybe a bit. And generally only when it has some sort of relation to Niseko. I do, however, reserve the right to talk about what some people think might be silly things. And, of course, the very serious subject of toast. (Funny, my 'AI grammar check thingy' on my new computer just suggested I replace 'very serious' with 'grave'!! Got to find out how to turn that off). By the way, if I post tomorrow with any news of further snowfall, it might be late in the day. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . Hello from Zao Onsen. And what better way to kick off a season with news of some snow on the ground. There is a thin layer of snow down to village levels this morning and it is snowing lightly now. The ski area seems to be aiming for an opening for a 'mid-December' opening, remaining quite vague. But an opening on Saturday 13th if possible... is what I am hearing. How flexible that is, I do not know. Early lift ticket prices are valid until 19th December. Let's see. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 547cm Posted on Friday 27th April 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . It's Friday morning and tomorrow is the start of 'Golden Week' (see below for more on that). Are we going to have Golden Week-like fine weather? Well, looks like the first part - the upcoming 3 day weekend - should be fine weather and getting quite warm. The second part of GW looks more unclear at the moment but we'll deal with that nearer the time. For now there is a lot of cloud about. There might be a little rain later on. But we should be looking at clearer skies in time for tomorrow morning. Golden Week Golden Week is a period from the end of April through early May containing a number of national holidays. Those holidays are as follows: - 29th April is 'Showa Day' (Showa-no-hi), the birthday of former Emperor Showa - 3rd May is 'Constitution Day' (Kenpo-kinenbi) - 4th May is 'Greenery Day' (Midori-no-hi) - 5th May is 'Children's Day' (Kodomo-no-hi) What this means for 2018 is that most people will enjoy two long weekends - 3 days this upcoming weekend and then 4 days off the weekend after: Long Weekend 1: Saturday 28th April - Monday 30th April Long Weekend 2: Thursday 3rd - Sunday 6th May Some people may even be lucky enough to have/take Tuesday and Thursday off next week, giving them a long 9 day holiday! The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Hello and good morning from Hakuba. A warm fine day yesterday with snow melting before our eyes. The bottom course at Hakuba 47 is a casualty and is now closed. They did well to keep it open until now! So you now need to get the Gondola back down at all four of the ski resorts that remain part open. Things are getting rather limited now and personally I'd take my 'old gear' up and leave my most precious new stuff in storage. The season officially ends on Sunday, so just 5 days left now. Sad, but it has been a long one (spring feels like it has been going on forever). And I am personally looking forward to being able to lie-in and laze about for a bit. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 547cm Posted on Saturday 5th May 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Here we are folks - it's the last weekend of the season. Come tomorrow evening, those ski lifts will be able to take a rest. And after the unsettled weather yesterday, it seems that we are going to enjoy some fine weather conditions over the weekend. Get this - Goryu, 47 and Happo-one are reporting 5-10cm of fresh snowfall up top (none on lower areas). And some of you may notice that indeed some of the official snow depths reported below have increased by 5cm since yesterday. It's funny to see fresh snow at this stage of the season, but of course very nice all the same. :) Right now there's still cloud around but blue sky too and we are expecting fine weather both today and tomorrow, warming up into low 20's during the day tomorrow. Enjoy the weekend! Tomorrow is the last day of the official ski season for all of the ski resorts in Hakuba. It will also be my last report of this long season. With settled weather due over the weekend, that last report might appear later than usual. ----- Hakuba Happo-one Lift info: - Gondola - Alpen quad - Usagidaira pair - Panorama pair - Grat quad - Kurobishi Number 3 pair - Kurobishi Number 2 quad - Kokusai Number 1 pair - Kokusai Number 3 pair Course info: - Usagidaira (part) - Kurobishi (part) - Panorama (part) - You can no longer ride back down to base areas - all base areas now closed - Take the Gondola back down to base Official snow depth: - Kurobishi: 70cm - Usagidaira: 20cm - Lower: -cm ----- Hakuba Goryu Lift info: - Gondola - Alps Number 1 pair - Alps Number 3 pair - Alps Number 2/4 pair Courses that remain open: - Panorama - Grand Prix - Technical - Super - Take the Gondola back down to base Official snow depth: - Top: 100cm - Toomi: -cm - Iimori: -cm ----- Hakuba 47 Lift info: - Gondola - Pair Line A-B - Quad Line C - Pair Line E Course info: - Part of R-4, R-5 and R-8 remain open - Take the Gondola back down to base Official snow depth: - Top: 65cm - Base: -cm ----- Tsugaike Kogen Lift info: - Gondola - Tsugaike Ropeway - Tsuga Number 1 pair - Tsuga Number 2 pair - Han-no-ki high speed Courses info: - Only the top Tsuga-no-mori (part) and Han-kou courses remain open - You can no longer ride back down to base areas - all base areas now closed - Take the Gondola back down to base Official snow depth: - Tsuga-no-mori: 115cm - Han-no-ki: 110cm - Lower areas: -cm Hakuba Now 2017-2018 season Data as of Saturday 5th May 2018 Total snowfall at base so far 547cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 60 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 42cm (25th January) November 2017 snowfall 47cm reported on 5 days December 2017 snowfall 158cm reported on 15 days January 2018 snowfall 202cm reported on 18 days February 2018 snowfall 103cm reported on 15 days March 2018 snowfall 17cm reported on 5 days April 2018 snowfall 20cm reported on 2 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Hakuba. - Hakuba Now: Sunday 6th May 2018
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 547cm Posted on Sunday 6th May 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. So, the ski lifts that are still spinning will end their season later on today, Sunday 6th May. It should be a fine day to end things for the season, with a fair bit of cloud around early on. Temps are set to rise to around mid-20s during the day. Did you enjoy the season? I had a blast. Actually, I probably spent more time on the slopes than I have for a few seasons. As I live here, I am lucky enough to be able to time my adventures based on snow and weather conditions. But from many conversations with visitors over the season, it’s clear that lots of folk have been here and quickly come to love Hakuba. As you do. Of course, some were luckier than others with timing... but that’s always going to be the case when you are dealing with nature. I’m not going to go over details of the season. I feel like that is what I have been doing every day for 5+ months. If you are interested in how the season went, please check out all of the archive reporting and you’ll get a day-by-day account. If you look on the Snowfall Analysis page (the blue button above), you’ll be able to compare recent seasons too. It’s worth spending some time reading through things if you are planning on visiting. An important word about snowfall numbers Note: this is my personal opinion (and an edited version of what I wrote at the end of last season) The ‘observed snowfall’ number that I report each day is how much snow I observe near Happo-one base. It’s basically how much snow you can expect at village/base levels. ‘Hakuba’ covers a rather wide area and so there is at times inevitably going to be more or less snow in different parts of the village and by different resorts. For more of an explanation of this reported ‘observed snowfall’ number - and why we report it - please read the SnowJapan message that can be found below. Hakuba typically gets less snow in the village compared with some other ‘snow country’ regions. My good friend lives over in Yuzawa town in Niigata Prefecture and we often compare and discuss this kind of thing. Yuzawa town is at an elevation of around 360m and they get famously impressive amounts of snow falling at that level. But the ski resorts over in Yuzawa mostly have less vertical than the ski resorts in Hakuba. The mountains are also mostly smaller and upper elevations are not as high. This all means that in Yuzawa the difference in the amount of snow falling at town and on the ski slopes is less than the difference that we experience here in Hakuba. The ski resorts in Hakuba get a lot more snowfall at higher elevations than down at base levels. As this is of course an important point, every day I feel it is important to make a point of reporting the on-mountain snowfall numbers that the ski resorts around Hakuba are themselves publishing each morning. I mention this snowfall every day in the individual ski resort data part of my reports, as well as near the top of my reports. Nature is of course very complex and reporting on snow is never going to be simple and clear-cut especially in an area as wide as Hakuba. Anyway, I do my best with the reporting and I tell you what I see with my own eyes each day. Hopefully we will get some nice spring weather over the next month. Then we’ll get into ‘rainy season’ and summer. Even here in Hakuba, the summer heat can be brutal - but we have our beautiful large mountains to climb and we are able to escape to higher altitudes. Ropeways will be operating to help you get up there. Please do check with the resorts for the latest information. That’s it from me for the 2017-2018 season and this is my last report of the season. On behalf of the good folks running SnowJapan, thank you for reading the Hakuba Now reports. I’ll be back again in November as the 2018-2019 winter season approaches. See you in autumn!
