Strong winds were blowing around last night and there's still some wind this morning (looks like top lifts at Happo-one currently stopped due to those conditions), but there's new snow to play in. I'm measuring 16cm since my last report and here's what the ski resorts are publishing this morning: Hakuba Cortina: 30cm Hakuba 47: up to 25cm Hakuba Goryu: 10-25cm Hakuba Happo-one: 10cm After today we should be getting clearer skies and perhaps some sunshine though we're back to snow sometime on Friday, particularly at higher elevations. (Some forecasts are daring to mention rain in base areas. I strenuously object very to the very suggestion! Hopefully that'll fix itself up before happening.) I'm measuring 11cm on the ground at base and here's what the resorts are reporting in terms of fresh snowfall: Hakuba Cortina: 30cm Hakuba 47: 25cm Hakuba Goryu: 10-25cm Hakuba Happo-one: 15cm All good. And snow should continue falling through the day today and tomorrow too. Once we get to Wednesday clearer skies are forecast through until late Friday. Looks like Goryu are mentioning late opening for their top lifts but other than that places seem to be opening as planned this morning. The Chinese New Year is this coming weekend and so this week and next week there are a lot of visitors to Hakuba coming to enjoy their holidays. They should be happy with the timing at the moment! I had an excellent day out on the slopes yesterday finding some great snow conditions and a few areas that were not as busy as you'd expect on a Saturday. Very nice. It was snowing really heavily at times as well so some fresh snow quickly filling in tracks. :) Resorts aren't reporting any fresh snow numbers this morning which may seem odd when I report the 10cm of snow on the ground since my last report. But that's the deal! Let's blame the windy conditions. This morning, we still have snow clouds hanging on and doing their thing and they are forecast to be with us for another few days. Some decent snowfall in there too, so I should be bringing you continuing good news over the next few reports. Skies should be clearing up around mid week. In the meantime, a great time to be here. There's just over 15cm on the ground in the village (and a bit more since I started putting the report together) and a very nice new covering of snow on the slopes. It should be an excellent morning. Watch out for wind though and poor visibility. Looks like the upper lifts at Happo-one are suspended at the moment due to strong wind conditions up there. Hopefully they'll be able to re-open if and when the winds ease off. Snowfall is forecast to stop by around lunchtime but be back tomorrow with snow clouds due over Hakuba through Tuesday. Nice. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . A good morning to you from Hakuba and thankfully it is a much (much) better one than yesterday. Yes, there's fresh snowfall on the ground. About 10cm of it in the village and resorts reporting various amounts, but mostly around 20cm on upper areas with Cortina going up to 30cm of fresh. A good foot, I like that. Hakuba 47: up to 20cm on upper areas Hakuba Goryu: 10-20cm Hakuba Happo-one: 20cm Hakuba Cortina: 30cm This is what we want to be able to report... every day! (Well, most days would be fine too!) There was a gusty wind blowing about earlier on but it seems to be less so now and doesn't appear to be affecting lift operations around the resorts. At the moment here in the village it is just cloudy with those snow clouds hanging on. Some of the lifts and courses that were closed yesterday are back up and running and the biggest change I can see so far this morning is a bigger areas of the Tsugaike Kogen, Cortina and Norikura due to open up. As always see below for more updated details. The forecast shows clearer conditions possible later on today and tomorrow morning with a return to snowfall later tomorrow. Temperatures are too high for snow, around 8 degrees mid morning, and not that cold even up top as well... though hopefully tonight it will get colder and there'll be some snow up there. Expect sun tomorrow with temperatures not quite as mild as today. After tonight next snowfall seems to be forecast for around Monday. As things stand there's not much snow on the upper slopes of the resort areas, so the wait continues and will most likely will be continuing next week. And the big news is that today is going to be the last day of the season for Hakuba Happo-one, Hakuba 47 and Hakuba Goryu... essentially meaning that today is the last day of the official ski season here in Hakuba (though people will still be hiking up to snow beyond tomorrow). Information on what is open has been updated below. A fine morning for it anyway with blue skies and sunshine with a warm 23 degrees forecast for later this afternoon, though perhaps some stronger winds as well. Rain is also due late today and into tomorrow. Tomorrow I will post a wrap-up of the season, so please come back for that. Hakuba 47: Hakuba Goryu: Goryu gondola and Alps Number 1 lift (and Panorama Course) at Goryu, and Line E (and Route 8) of Hakuba 47 remain open. Access via Hakuba Goryu only, Hakuba 47 base is closed. Last day of the season today. Hakuba Happo-one: Just a small part of Panorama area now remains skiable. Last day of the season today. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . And so yesterday - Tuesday 3rd May - ended up being the last day of the 2015-2016 ski season here in Hakuba. I think the resort folk did really well keeping things going for that long, given the weather and amount of snow that they had to play with. A big ‘otsukaresama deshita’ to everyone involved. From today, you're going to have to hike up if you still want to hit any remaining snow. Do be sure you are equipped, know what you’re doing and take extra - it was on the national news last night about a number of climber/trekker casualties in the North Alps already this season. Let’s take a look back at what proved to be something of a ‘difficult’ season. First of all, if you are reading this while researching Hakuba - or any of the other regions covered by the SnowJapan daily reports - please do make sure that you read through the archive reports from previous seasons, as the season that has just finished really wasn’t a representative season. The 2015-2016 started on 28th November 2015 with the first ski lifts moving. But the season took a while to get going properly. And while we didn't know it at the time, in some ways things continued a bit like that in a similar kind of fashion through the season. One of the main characteristics of the 2015-2016 season – and this is not only for Hakuba and Nagano, but for most snow regions of Japan – was the relative lack of consistent and heavy snowfall and what seemed like often ‘warmer than normal’ temperatures. Those of us used to a Japanese winter are used to regular snow…and lots of it. Having to look to the forecasts and wondering when the next decent snowfall will come during peak season months is something that we are just not used to. Consistency of snowfall is something that Japan is rightly very proud of and can usually boast about, so everyone is very much hoping that for the 2016-2017 season we will be able to get ‘back to normal’ in that respect. Having said all of that we also did get some great conditions on mountain too, and for many there will have been many fine memories made and those days will hopefully be the ones that get remembered. Even a ‘less than average’ kind of season here would be a great one in other places and we need to try to remember that. Once again during this season I have talked to lots of people and most seemed to be very pleased with their visit to the village. Not just for the skiing and boarding, but for the atmosphere, the things that have been going on, the things to eat and drink and the friendly locals. There has been a further increase in the number of foreigners visiting Hakuba this past winter with many different languages being spoken. That trend shows no sign of slowing down and will surely continue into the coming years. 'When's the best time to visit' remains one of the most frequently asked questions. It’s always a difficult question to answer and sadly there's no guarantees with the weather - this season has definitely demonstrated that. You can come here mid-season and be unlucky with the timing; on the other hand, you can come early or late on and enjoy excellent conditions. The best thing that I can suggest is to sit down and read through the Hakuba Now reports here on SnowJapan from past seasons. There's a lot of reading to be done, but it will be worth it as the reports will give you a clearer idea of how things have happened going back more than a decade. And remember, we (SnowJapan) are not here to sell you a holiday… we’re here to pass on honest and trustworthy information! So now we head into late spring, the ‘rainy season’ and then into summer. Even here in Hakuba, the summer heat can be brutal - but we have the nearby mountains to climb and we are able to escape to higher altitudes. Ropeways will be operating to help you get up there. Please do check with the resorts for the latest information... they don't seem to have got their 'Green Season' mode into full gear just quite yet! The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Morning from Hakuba where it is snowing, I am very happy to report. Resorts around the area seem to be generally reporting up to 10cm of fresh. As usual Hakuba 47 seem to be juggling what is open over there and reacting to the snowfall, but for the moment it looks like the other resorts that are open remain open with the same lifts and courses. For now. If this snow continues we can of course expect more openings very soon. Hakuba Cortina are this morning reporting 10cm which of course isn't enough to get open, but the forecast for the region is for continued snow today and tomorrow. Cortina is of course well known for being a place that often enjoys huge amounts of snow dumpage during a storm, so let's hope that tonight and tomorrow delivers. I hope to bring exciting news in my report tomorrow. Wrap up warm if you plan to be here, it's going to get very cold. Hakuba 47: Hakuba 47 is reporting 10cm of new snowfall this morning. If the forecasts are right, the sun is going to be out in force through the weekend and maybe taking a bit of a break early week, before coming back for the end of the Golden Week run of holidays. Temperatures have been and will be rising to mid-20s levels in the afternoon. Feels fantastic to be out and on the mountains. --- Hakuba Goryu: Top of Hakuba Goryu plans to be at least part open until Sunday 10th May. All lower areas arew now closed. Top Panorama, Grand Prix and Super courses remain open. Ride the Gondola back down. The following lifts remain open: - Hakuba Goryu Telecabin Gondola - Alps Number 1 pair lift - Alps Number 3 pair lift - Alps Number 2/4 pair lift ** Official snow depth: Alps Daira - 140cm --- Hakuba 47: Hakuba 47 plans to be at least part open until Wednesday 6th May. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Hello and it's another fine morning here in Hakuba. Warm too. Blue skies just some high thin cloud in places, but mostly blue and clear. Temperatures again to approach 20 degrees this afternoon. No snow forecast for today. ;) If you are planning a trip to Hakuba this weekend you should be treated to more clear skies and similar conditions. --- Some very interesting news for all you Hakuba fans. Next season, there's going to be a Hakuba season pass. Yes, a pass that'll let you ride all the lifts at 10 resorts. Yey! And it's yours if you have a spare 130,000 yen (or 70,000 yen if you are a child) - and should be available from the beginning of June*. (*Please note, there'll be no snow at that time!) --- Hakuba Goryu: Top area of Hakuba Goryu plans to be at least part open until Sunday 10th May. You can still (just about) ski down to gondola base using the Toomi area on a thin strip of snow. The 'Expert Course' is now closed. The following lifts remain open: - Hakuba Goryu Telecabin Gondola - Alps Number 1 pair lift - Alps Number 3 pair lifts ** Official snow depth: Alps Daira - 175cm Toomi - 30cm --- Hakuba 47: Hakuba 47 plans to be at least part open until Wednesday 6th May.
