The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Hello and good morning from Hakuba. A warm fine day yesterday with snow melting before our eyes. The bottom course at Hakuba 47 is a casualty and is now closed. They did well to keep it open until now! So you now need to get the Gondola back down at all four of the ski resorts that remain part open. Things are getting rather limited now and personally I'd take my 'old gear' up and leave my most precious new stuff in storage. The season officially ends on Sunday, so just 5 days left now. Sad, but it has been a long one (spring feels like it has been going on forever). And I am personally looking forward to being able to lie-in and laze about for a bit. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Here we are folks - it's the last weekend of the season. Come tomorrow evening, those ski lifts will be able to take a rest. And after the unsettled weather yesterday, it seems that we are going to enjoy some fine weather conditions over the weekend. Get this - Goryu, 47 and Happo-one are reporting 5-10cm of fresh snowfall up top (none on lower areas). And some of you may notice that indeed some of the official snow depths reported below have increased by 5cm since yesterday. It's funny to see fresh snow at this stage of the season, but of course very nice all the same. :) Right now there's still cloud around but blue sky too and we are expecting fine weather both today and tomorrow, warming up into low 20's during the day tomorrow. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. So, the ski lifts that are still spinning will end their season later on today, Sunday 6th May. It should be a fine day to end things for the season, with a fair bit of cloud around early on. Temps are set to rise to around mid-20s during the day. Did you enjoy the season? I had a blast. Actually, I probably spent more time on the slopes than I have for a few seasons. As I live here, I am lucky enough to be able to time my adventures based on snow and weather conditions. But from many conversations with visitors over the season, it’s clear that lots of folk have been here and quickly come to love Hakuba. As you do. Of course, some were luckier than others with timing... but that’s always going to be the case when you are dealing with nature. I’m not going to go over details of the season. I feel like that is what I have been doing every day for 5+ months. If you are interested in how the season went, please check out all of the archive reporting and you’ll get a day-by-day account. If you look on the Snowfall Analysis page (the blue button above), you’ll be able to compare recent seasons too. It’s worth spending some time reading through things if you are planning on visiting. An important word about snowfall numbers Note: this is my personal opinion (and an edited version of what I wrote at the end of last season) The ‘observed snowfall’ number that I report each day is how much snow I observe near Happo-one base. It’s basically how much snow you can expect at village/base levels. ‘Hakuba’ covers a rather wide area and so there is at times inevitably going to be more or less snow in different parts of the village and by different resorts. For more of an explanation of this reported ‘observed snowfall’ number - and why we report it - please read the SnowJapan message that can be found below. Hakuba typically gets less snow in the village compared with some other ‘snow country’ regions. My good friend lives over in Yuzawa town in Niigata Prefecture and we often compare and discuss this kind of thing. Yuzawa town is at an elevation of around 360m and they get famously impressive amounts of snow falling at that level. But the ski resorts over in Yuzawa mostly have less vertical than the ski resorts in Hakuba. The mountains are also mostly smaller and upper elevations are not as high. This all means that in Yuzawa the difference in the amount of snow falling at town and on the ski slopes is less than the difference that we experience here in Hakuba. The ski resorts in Hakuba get a lot more snowfall at higher elevations than down at base levels. As this is of course an important point, every day I feel it is important to make a point of reporting the on-mountain snowfall numbers that the ski resorts around Hakuba are themselves publishing each morning. I mention this snowfall every day in the individual ski resort data part of my reports, as well as near the top of my reports. Nature is of course very complex and reporting on snow is never going to be simple and clear-cut especially in an area as wide as Hakuba. Anyway, I do my best with the reporting and I tell you what I see with my own eyes each day. Hopefully we will get some nice spring weather over the next month. Then we’ll get into ‘rainy season’ and summer. Even here in Hakuba, the summer heat can be brutal - but we have our beautiful large mountains to climb and we are able to escape to higher altitudes. By mid afternoon though the skies had clouded over and snow had started falling once again. By this morning here is how much fresh snow the ski resorts are reporting: Hakuba Goryu: 5-10cm Hakuba 47: 5-10cm Hakuba Cortina: 3cm Hakuba Happo-one: 0cm So not a huge amount of fresh, more like a thin layer. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . This 'snow week' started off with the Kanto region grabbing all the headlines and a layer of snow causing all sorts of problems in the capital region. They're just not used to it like us. Hopefully transportation out of Tokyo and the region won't be a problem. We also had snow falling during the day yesterday - probably about the same as what Tokyo got! I'm guessing a better quality of snow though. ;) This morning here is what the resorts are reporting Hakuba Cortina: 5-10cm at base; 10+cm up top Hakuba Happo-one: 15cm at top Gondola station Hakuba 47: 20cm Hakuba Goryu: 10cm at Toomi; 20m up top So you can get the idea - generally looks like we can expect around 20cm of snow on the mountain.... and counting, because it is snowing and likely to be building up nicely today and over the next run of days. That exciting forecast is still looking good with a lot of snow due probably through into the weekend. Expect conditions to be improving but be careful with limited visibility and always do remember to keep that excitement in check. I know, it can be difficult! Enjoy. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. And here we are at the start of a week that brings a lot of promise of large amounts of fresh snow. It is good to see snow falling again. First of all the fresh snowfall headlines so far: Hakuba Cortina: 5-10cm Hakuba 47: reporting 10cm yesterday afternoon upper slopes Hakuba Goryu: Toomi 1cm; upper areas 5cm Hakuba Happo-one: 2cm at top Gondola station So a modest layer of snow can be expected on the slopes - but there's that promise of much more just ahead of us. Yesterday there was some good snow falling later in the afternoon and it was piling up quite quickly for a while, but it eased off in the evening. This morning it's cloudy skies with snow forecast to be falling later on. Calm before the storm perhaps as when it starts snowing again it should be the start of the excellent week for snowfall that we are all expecting. It's pretty exciting to look at the forecasts. If the snow happens like they are saying it will, we're on for some serious snowfall. Really serious. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . It is another very cold morning. There is a lot of grey cloud hanging over the village at the moment but clearer blue skies above that. So some very varied scenery early on depending on where you are. I recommend a trip up as high as you can to see over the clouds. Hakuba Cortina: 30-50cm Hakuba 47: 10cm Happo-one: 5cm (top of Gondola) Interesting to see Cortina reporting so much fresh; and Happo-one only 5cm. Hmmm. The resorts curiously don't seem to be reporting as much as we are seeing. I usually check four different location numbers in a morning as a kind of check, and obviously there are areas that get more or less snow than others. This morning the numbers around base areas are 5cm, 9cm, 13cm (the place we usually measure) and 15cm since yesterday. You can see the problem we face with this Nature thing! Whatever, the headline numbers aside, I think it's fair to say there's a layer of fresh snow out there with more of it to the north at Cortina and Norikura. Sun is expected today so these clouds are probably going to be moving on this morning. It should be a very good day. Sun is forecast for tomorrow too, when it should also be a little milder. The forecasts are looking.... interesting for mid-week. Heavy rain or heavy snow? Fresh snowfall reported by the ski resorts this morning: Hakuba Happo-one: 8cm Hakuba 47: 5cm Hakuba Cortina: 1cm Not as much to report this morning - more that I am measuring actually... with conditions keeping very cold it should be great out there this morning again. Earlier on snow was falling but now it is generally cloudy but I can see some snow actually breaking through in places (see Iwatake webcam image below). Might we see clearer conditions later on? Though the forecasts I like have snow through today and tomorrow. With clearer weather beyond that, I'd prefer more fresh myself. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Yesterday it was all about the snow with the wind giving us a breather to just enjoy the fresh out there. With more snow overnight, here's the fresh snowfall headlines. Hakuba Happo-one: 50cm (top of Gondola) Hakuba Cortina: 15-20cm (base); 20-25cm (top) Hakuba Goryu: 15-25cm Hakuba 47: up to 20cm (maybe up to 30cm) Way to go Happo-one! I like it when a place reports an impressive 50cm of snow. That is up by their upper gondola station. I feel the need to check that out myself. ;) Good numbers around the other resorts too so conditions should be good this morning. The forecast continues to be good too with the snow clouds likely to continue being over our lovely Hakuba and delivering through Saturday. Visibility looks limited out on many slopes this morning. Fresh powder and limited visibility. Difficult to not be really excited about it, but an extra need to be careful whilst having all that fun. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . The wet feel to proceedings yesterday made way to proper snow I'm happy to report. Here's the fresh snowfall headlines as reported by the ski resorts: Hakuba Cortina: 15-20cm at base; 20-25cm on upper areas Hakuba Happo: 20cm (top gondola station) Hakuba Goryu: 15-30cm Hakuba 47: up to 30cm Less so down here at base, but a nice new layer up on the slopes then. Should be good though visibility looks very poor in some places early on. A few lifts affected early on by the weather conditions this morning at Happo-one and Tsugaike but hopefully they'll get going. The forecast for the next few days is looking very positive with some potentially heavy snow and some good numbers to report tomorrow (and beyond). Take care out there and have fun. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . I have to get myself off to Nagano early this morning so it's an early quick report from me today. Sorry it can't be more in-depth. Not the most friendly of early morning conditions here with wind and kind of wet conditions with a mix of rain, sleet or snow depending on where you are. The wind will surely be affecting lifts are resorts even though it doesn't actually feel windy outside my place just now; info updated as much as possible at this early hour below. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . It is a very cold start to the day here. My thermometer outside saying -8C. There's a light covering of snow on the ground though some places reporting none - and just a bit being reported by the resorts that I can find: Hakuba Happo-one: 5cm (top of Gondola) Hakuba Cortina 3cm (base and top) Nice and cold, snow conditions should be great this morning. And things seem to be calm too. Just wrap up well. Perhaps a little snow tomorrow but looking at the forecast it looks like we are down for some heavy snow again early in the week. Sounds good to me (though the rain that is currently shown on the forecast to be with us Monday before the snow appears sounds much less appealing!!)
