And this morning I have some fresh snow news for you. 2cm being measured down here at base, and there is a thin layer of snow once again covering base areas. It's good to see of course but probably will not last long with sunshine expected today. But wait, more snow tomorrow? It's not giving up easy this season... Snow is falling giving us limited visibility on the mountains at the moment early on. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . The wait for fresh snow continues (and looks likely to for a bit longer). Yesterday was a day of thin cloud, hardly any wind. Fairly mild. Something like that. This morning there is some light snow falling on the slopes, and some light rain falling in lower base areas. Light - it's not going to pile up and suddenly give us deep powder. It's currently around 1C and might get a little warmer later on so we'll just have to see how it will develop. And I will let you know. This is what the ski resorts are reporting in terms of fresh snowfall: Hakuba Goryu: 30cm (Toomi); 50cm (top) Hakuba 47: 20-30cm Hakuba Cortina: 30-40cm Hakuba Norikura: 30cm Hakuba Iwatake: 20cm Hakuba Happo-one: 15cm Nice numbers (if a little varied). I can add 33cm to the report as well. There's actually some sun shining through in places; lots of cloud still around the mountains but increasingly blue skies above the village. I'll leave it at that for today. I just need to decide where I want to go to get stuck in all that lovely fresh snowy goodness. It should be a really great morning. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . After a run of very cold days yesterday was somewhat milder, but cold enough on upper areas to keep the snow in decent conditions. This morning there are just a few numbers to report from the resorts: Cortina: 10cm (base), 15cm (top) Happo-one: 5cm top of Riesen quad Bit of snow falling yesterday evening through the morning but there some wind blowing it about and so there is a small cm number to report from around some base areas. Was walking in some It is cloudy this morning but there's a few breaks in the clouds opening up with a bit of blue sky to see in places. While all ski resorts are open and there's some good snow to be found, we really could be doing with a few more serious snow storms to bring us some deeper numbers (and importantly, deeper conditions). With that wish in mind, Tuesday through Wednesday might well bring us that. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . It doesn't feel as cold this morning and the temperatures being reported by the ski resorts reflect that. Just -3 from Happo and milder than that being reported by 47/Goryu. Anyway there has been a bit of snowfall this morning and some resorts are reporting some numbers - Happo-one saying there's 6cm by the top of the Riesen quad and Cortina are reporting 2cm at base and up top. Fingers crossed we get some fresh through the day tomorrow, though I wouldn't expect anything significant. I'd honestly prefect colder conditions to keep the snow we got in good condition. After today, the next decent snowfall looks set to be with us around Tuesday/Wednesday. Good news from Hakuba 47 - the Osaru part of their Tree Riding Zone is opening from today. Yey! (You need to register to use those areas). The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Enjoy your New Years Day? I was out at 47 with a group of folk from Australia and New Zealand in the afternoon. Light snow with a little wind and while there wasn't a fresh layer for the new year it was keeping cold and we enjoyed some good conditions. And this morning I have news of a fresh layer on the mountain. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 9cm Snowfall at base this season 17cm Good morning from a snowy Niseko, although as I type out this report, it is actually quite bright. The snow is still falling lightly and around 10cm in base areas. More and less in places. Those of you keeping up with news from Japan will have no doubt heard about the two types of 'invasion' that are being endlessly 'discussed' on the telly and across 'social media'. Yes, I talk of bears and foreigners. Some of you have actually written in asking about those things. My remit is, of course, snow and weather reports, but I do have thoughts on those, and I'll leave them for later. Those of you who have followed my words over the years will probably be aware of my increasing distaste for all (most) things 'social media'. That has only increased again this year. That means I thankfully manage to avoid much of the negativity that seems to live and prosper in that world. However, I still can't be 100% blind to what is being said, even in less extreme environs. Anyway, please don't worry: I'm not going to bang on about those kinds of things too much. Maybe a bit. And generally only when it has some sort of relation to Niseko. I do, however, reserve the right to talk about what some people think might be silly things. And, of course, the very serious subject of toast. (Funny, my 'AI grammar check thingy' on my new computer just suggested I replace 'very serious' with 'grave'!! Got to find out how to turn that off). There is a thin layer of snow down to village levels this morning and it is snowing lightly now. The ski area seems to be aiming for an opening for a 'mid-December' opening, remaining quite vague. But an opening on Saturday 13th if possible... is what I am hearing. How flexible that is, I do not know. Early lift ticket prices are valid until 19th December. Let's see. I'll let you know of further snow before the season starts. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . It's Friday morning and tomorrow is the start of 'Golden Week' (see below for more on that). Are we going to have Golden Week-like fine weather? Well, looks like the first part - the upcoming 3 day weekend - should be fine weather and getting quite warm. The second part of GW looks more unclear at the moment but we'll deal with that nearer the time. For now there is a lot of cloud about. There might be a little rain later on. But we should be looking at clearer skies in time for tomorrow morning. Golden Week Golden Week is a period from the end of April through early May containing a number of national holidays. Those holidays are as follows: - 29th April is 'Showa Day' (Showa-no-hi), the birthday of former Emperor Showa - 3rd May is 'Constitution Day' (Kenpo-kinenbi) - 4th May is 'Greenery Day' (Midori-no-hi) - 5th May is 'Children's Day' (Kodomo-no-hi) What this means for 2018 is that most people will enjoy two long weekends - 3 days this upcoming weekend and then 4 days off the weekend after: Long Weekend 1: Saturday 28th April - Monday 30th April Long Weekend 2: Thursday 3rd - Sunday 6th May Some people may even be lucky enough to have/take Tuesday and Thursday off next week, giving them a long 9 day holiday!
