The good news is that I see the ski area is actually reporting 27cm of fresh up in the top Yamabiko area. That sounds good! It isn't feeling particularly cold, but should be getting a bit colder as the morning goes on. Fingers crossed more snow, too. One other thing today is wind. The ski area is warning that strong winds might affect gondola operations. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Happo didn't last all day yesterday due to winds on the mountain. Not as windy today and ski areas are open. (As of 11am it looks like only the gondola at Happo-one is moving with the other scheduled lifts on standby due to wind). As of 8am, I was able to measure 9cm fresh snow and earlier this morning here is what ski areas were reporting: Happo-one: 30cm (upper) Goryu: 20cm Hakuba 47: 15cm (base); 20cm (upper) Cortina: 15cm And Jigatake seems to be reporting an impressive 30cm. More snowfall to the south this time? So a nice new layer all round. It's a bit wet and heavy down in town, but gladly received. (Just to be clear, any further snow since 8am will be included in my report tomorrow). More of Hakuba Goryu ski area is seemingly open this morning with the Champion connecting runs down to base and Toomi. It is windy this morning, enough to almost certainly affect lift operations on the mountain. Let's checking official sauces for healthy lifestyle! ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report (Added later) Moiwa base at 6am: 0℃, gusty winds, 30cm new snow in the last 6hrs, poor visibility. Moiwa Mikaeri 800m: -3℃, N5m/s, wind and snow, poor visibility. Hanazono 800m: -3℃, N10m/s, no new snow in the last 12hrs. Coastal data: Benkei cape NNE16m/s, Kamui cape ENE7m/s, 1002hPa, wave height 3m. A 976hPa low pressure system passed bringing warm air from the south and 20cm – 40cm of heavy wet snow. Temperatures were high, and snow accumulated in the trees and on power lines. Above 800m, temperatures were below zero. Yesterday snowstorms from the north caused rapid cornice formation on southwest slopes and the avalanche risk was very high. A cold front moved in from the north in the afternoon with continuing the wind and snow. It’s best to stay within the ski resort today. Even within the resort, watch for avalanches on open slopes and below the lift line. Very heavy, wet snow has buried the bushes and shrubs off the runs, however skiing on the open, steep slopes under the cornices is very dangerous. Choose your route carefully. Watch out for crashing into trees, you won’t win that battle. Drive carefully on the road. Don’t rely too much on your tires. Once you start sliding, you won’t be able to stop. Watch out for snow falling from roofs. If you see children playing outside, be careful. It does not feel quite as cold this morning but we do expect a drop in temperatures later and over the next several days. Along with fresh snow and some windy conditions. Just a bit of snow since my report yesterday. At base level, Hanazono is reporting 2cm, Annupuri is reporting 5cm... and Hirafu is reporting 15cm. Hmmmm... Following on from my comments about nighta/evening skiing yesterday, here is some historic data showing when the floodlit skiing has closed at Niseko Grand Hirafu in previous seasons: 1986 season: night skiing until 9:30pm 1987 season: night skiing until 9:00pm 1993 season: night skiing until 9:30pm 1996 season: night skiing until 9:30pm 2003 season: night skiing until 9:00pm 2012 season: night skiing until 8:30pm 2021 season: night skiing until 8:00pm 2022 season: night skiing until 7:00pm 2023 season: night skiing until 7:00pm 2024 season: night skiing until 7:00pm 2025 season: night skiing until 7:00pm I'd love to be able to be out there until 9:30pm! (And also know the reasons for the early closing time in recent years). The mountain is not fully open yet, along with gates. As noted in the Avalanche Report below, please stay in bounds and... just respect stuff. Like good folk do. Anyway, it's time for some Sunday morning toast! ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base at 6am: -5℃, light winds, no new snow, good visibility. Moiwa Mikaeri 800m: -9℃, E1.6m/s, no new snow. Hanazono 800m: -5.2℃, SSW4.4m/s, no new snow in the last 12hrs. Coastal data: Benkei cape SSE4m/s, Kamui cape SSE4m/s, 1019hPa, wave height 0.6m. There has been no new snowfall and wind slabs above 800m have consolidated. The overall avalanche risk is low, however be careful as cornices around 1000m are prone to breakage. Due to the lack of snow the bamboo grass has not yet flattened, making only groomed runs suitable for skiing. Lets hope the next storm covers them up. Snowfall is expected to start in the afternoon from the front of an approaching low pressure system. Strong winds and snow will follow, bringing rapid cornice and snowdrift growth on the lee sides of ridges. The avalanche risk will increase. Pay close attention to future snowfall trends. Most avalanche accidents occur during or immediately after snowstorms. When entering the mountains, please consider the risks of weather changes and plan your climb and skiing accordingly. Skiing off-piste is not yet permitted. Do not thoughtlessly duck under ropes. Guests must follow the ski resort rules and must not cut lift lines. Respect for all is required regardless of nationality. A little more snow overnight, and at least four resorts are running a handful of lifts, while two others have left up information from long ago and no report on whether they did in fact decide to open today. OK, the curmudgeon gets to start the year with a rant: why don’t the resorts put up useful information for their guests in a quickly-accessible place, and in a timely way? Whatever your thoughts on our digitally-immersed world, it sure is easier to get a lot more information quickly than ever before. So why not use it and let people know the basics—like, are you actually open or not? Or do we next need to find your Instagram, Facebook or Tiktok location.... Some of the resorts are great; maybe most do a good job of keeping new information up there for us. But didn’t a great big international, slick new operation take over one of the resorts, yet announces “We decided to open on December 13!” at the top of the site, then has course/lift information from November 9 below? Hope you don’t run that new hotel like that.... Rant is now ended. The season has begun. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Hello and good morning from Nozawa. Some more snow since my report yesterday but we are going to be having clearer skies this morning. And an open ski area thanks to there being less wind. Operations appear to be unchanged so we probably need more snow for more to open up. Snow due late tomorrow into Monday and then mid week, so hopefully we'll be getting some consistency going soon. A lot of folk lining up for the gondola at the start of the day.
