The ski area is open and after a few flashes of mid-winter it still feels like we're not fully into the winter season yet. After the blizzard and a few more cm to report since yesterday morning, we have much calmer conditions this morning with a lot of blue sky and sunshine. It often happens like that, but it still feels weird. There's still not a lot of snow on the forecast for the week ahead. Maybe tomorrow, but don't expect much. As other reports this morning have also mentioned, we're all going to experience some very mild weather at the weekend. Looks like a few more runs are available at Yakebitaiyama. Probably going to need more snow for much more to open up. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . Houston, we are looking good. After being closed yesterday due to wind, the resort is open today with even more new snow, so it's a double dipper day. Yipee!! We've had almost 180 cm of snow this month, and downtown streets already look like mid-winter with big piles on the side. The smaller streets are already down to one lane. Good stuff. However, not all is great in the land of Furano. This weekend is threatening temps of +6, +11, and +10 for Friday thru Sunday. Unbelievable bummer, man! After that things appear to return to normal. Oh well. Only 9 more shopping days until Christmas. It is windy this morning, enough to almost certainly affect lift operations on the mountain. Let's checking official sauces for healthy lifestyle! ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report (Added later) Moiwa base at 6am: 0℃, gusty winds, 30cm new snow in the last 6hrs, poor visibility. Moiwa Mikaeri 800m: -3℃, N5m/s, wind and snow, poor visibility. Hanazono 800m: -3℃, N10m/s, no new snow in the last 12hrs. Coastal data: Benkei cape NNE16m/s, Kamui cape ENE7m/s, 1002hPa, wave height 3m. A 976hPa low pressure system passed bringing warm air from the south and 20cm – 40cm of heavy wet snow. Temperatures were high, and snow accumulated in the trees and on power lines. Above 800m, temperatures were below zero. Yesterday snowstorms from the north caused rapid cornice formation on southwest slopes and the avalanche risk was very high. A cold front moved in from the north in the afternoon with continuing the wind and snow. It’s best to stay within the ski resort today. Even within the resort, watch for avalanches on open slopes and below the lift line. Very heavy, wet snow has buried the bushes and shrubs off the runs, however skiing on the open, steep slopes under the cornices is very dangerous. Choose your route carefully. Watch out for crashing into trees, you won’t win that battle. Drive carefully on the road. Don’t rely too much on your tires. Once you start sliding, you won’t be able to stop. Watch out for snow falling from roofs. If you see children playing outside, be careful. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Snowy scenes again this morning across Shiga Kogen. Earlier on it was a blizzard kind of 'can't see much' situation. Seems a bit improved at the moment, here in Ichinose where I am now anyway, but visibility is still limited at best. Wind has been blowing the snow around and so it is one of those times when you'll see more/less depending on where you look. Okushiga Kogen seems to be reporting 30cm of fresh and Yakebitaiyama was reporting 20cm very early morning. The lifts are Okushiga Kogen and Kumanoyu all appear to be on standby mid-morning, as is the Number 4 pair at Yokoteyama. Beyond today, forecasts all appear to point to calmer and clearer skies and it might even warm up a bit by the weekend. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Pretty heavy rain overnight that has (thankfully) turned to snow. Only about 7cm so far, but it’s still coming down. I was starting to worry that some of the early openers would have to close (Suginohara’s 10cm at base doesn’t leave much leeway, especially when they aren’t carrying passengers down on the gondola). But that’s the early season! I’ve heard that lots of people are looking for backcountry skiing as early as next week, and even in a good snow year that’s just not possible (not smart, anyway.
