Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata
New snowfall at base 7cm
Snowfall at base this season 132cm
Posted on Monday 15th December 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here.
Pretty heavy rain overnight that has (thankfully) turned to snow. Only about 7cm so far, but it’s still coming down. I was starting to worry that some of the early openers would have to close (Suginohara’s 10cm at base doesn’t leave much leeway, especially when they aren’t carrying passengers down on the gondola). But that’s the early season!
I’ve heard that lots of people are looking for backcountry skiing as early as next week, and even in a good snow year that’s just not possible (not smart, anyway. It’s a jungle out there).
If it’s a white Christmas, were happy, and this year, too, the weather is going to be all over the place up until the holiday. Expect sun, rain, warm temps and snow.
The rich tapestry of early-season mountain life....
