  • Yuzawa Now: Saturday 4th April 2015

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 1302cm Posted on Saturday 4th April 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. There were some really stunning views of a thick 'sea of clouds' hanging over the Minamiuonuma valley areas this morning, as the day started off with thick fog and low cloud. That cleared to eventually leave us with more blue skies and sunny conditions here today... not as warm though with temperatures just about getting into double digits. A bit of a wind starting up during the day and as of just before 2pm now I am hearing that Gala Yuzawa might be closing due to the wind conditions. Currently it looks like we might not get as much rain as we have been expecting for tomorrow too, most likely it will be falling in the morning. Tomorrow will probably end up a bit warmer than today though. After that a good chance of more rain early in the week and colder temps. but clearer skies are forecast mid-week onwards. --- Official snow depths: GALA Yuzawa: 360cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 210cm Iwappara: 125cm Joetsu Kokusai: 240cm Kagura: 350cm Kandatsu Kogen: 290cm Maiko Snow Resort: 260cm (upper) 140cm (lower) Naeba: 240cm NASPA Ski Garden: 217cm Yuzawa Nakazato: 145cm --- Planned closing dates for resorts in the Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma region Information as currently available and of course subject to change depending on conditions. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Fresh snow! There has been just a dusting here at base and town level; and the Kagura resort is reporting 5cm or so. It's great to see snow falling of course and it is still falling now lightly. It's very probably going to dry up soon though and the chance of a bit of sun and clearer skies is forecast for later on in the day today. Definitely been colder the last few days as well and the temperature is right now hovering around 0 degrees. So this afternoon things should warm up a little and a bit more tomorrow. Expect some sunshine tomorrow. Looks like increasing temperatures will be the pattern over the next week. Still, it's been colder than we expect for early April. From today, we'll try to keep up-to-date each day with details from each of the resorts that remain open with 'what's open' in terms of lifts and/or courses. See below for that. --- Official snow depths: GALA Yuzawa: Official snow depth of 270cm. The South Area is now closed. The Central Area, most of the North Area and the downhill course remain open. It's cleared up now though and a bit of low cloud in the valleys aside it is going to be a fine and sunny day and warm up to around 13-14 degrees in town. More rainfall is forecast from tomorrow and with the freezing point rising to around the 3000m level we probably can't hope for any snow up high even. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. We enjoyed the sun for lots of the day yesterday, a bit of a wind in the afternoon and cloudier conditions later on with then rain during the night. Quite heavy at times too. It is not raining this morning but cloud remains over the area and it is very noticeably not as warm as it has been over the last week or so. We are forecast to get to see the sun again today but it doesn't look like it will get as hot with the local forecast predicting a high of about 20 degrees. Tomorrow it's sun all the way and more like mid-20s so that should be good weather for the last day of the season at GALA Yuzawa, Naeba and Tashiro areas. Naeba were hoping to be able to keep the Daishamen course open, but have had to close it due to the lack of snow up there. Snow melt has been fast over the last week or so... From Thursday onwards only Kagura (via Mitsumata Ropeway) will remain open and they plan to continue on until the end of May. We'll be posting our last daily update of the season tomorrow, and then reports at least once a week until Kagura closes. --- Official snow depths: GALA Yuzawa: Official snow depth of 110cm. • Yuzawa Now: Thursday 28th May 2015

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 1303cm Posted on Thursday 28th May 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. I was planning on a pre-weekend report tomorrow, but I'll make it a bit earlier as there's some news... From yesterday (Wednesday 27th), a shuttle bus is taking skiers and boarders from the top of the Mitsumata Ropeway over to the base of the Kagura Gondola - unfortunately there's not enough snow now left on the Mitsumata area to keep it open as a 'connecting run' and so the Mitsumata lifts are now closed. With temperatures closing in on 30 degrees C again today in town, it's almost difficult to believe that Kagura is actually still open! It's going to be a hot one. But it is with the main run and the Gondola course still hoping to remain open until Sunday. 4 more days including today if you want some very last turns. The weather forecast is for the sun and hot conditions to continue through Saturday, with perhaps some rain on Sunday making things cooler for the last day of the season. --- Kagura: Kagura plans to be open until 31st May. Planned lifts: Mitsumata Ropeway Kagura Gondola Kagura Number 1 high speed lift Kagura Number 1 Romance lift (this lift operating on Saturday and Sunday only) Very thin on snow in places. All other ski resorts in the region are now closed for the season. • Yuzawa Now: Sunday 31st May 2015

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 1303cm Posted on Sunday 31st May 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. And after another hot day yesterday, we actually got some rain overnight and this morning it is considerably cooler. The forecast is for a cloudy day, with perhaps some sun later on in the day. Temperatures probably won't rise much past the low 20's even here in town and so it might even feel chilly up there at Kagura. So, the last day of the season at Kagura and therefore for the whole region. Somehow they have managed to keep enough snow on the main Kagura run to remain open! The 2014-2015 season has at last come to an end. With some ski hills closing two months ago, this last part of the season with Kagura remaining open always seems to go on for a long time – especially as there have been close to no signs of snow and hot conditions down here in town for quite some time. Kagura always has the longest season and this time they were open for a period of 191 days… that’s over 6 months! So that was it. According to the chart that you can see below, we observed a huge 1303cm of snow in town this season since December. That’s getting on for 5m more than last season. And remember that is the snow that fell at town level – not high up on the mountains! Impressive numbers I’m sure you’ll agree. Probably the main talking point of the 2014-2015 season was the snowfall that we got in December. It felt like it wasn’t going to stop at some points, and it’s probably fun to go and read over the archive reports to remind yourself of how that developed. December 2013: 131cm observed at town level December 2014: 559cm observed at town level That’s some difference. More snow this last season than the previous one in the month of January as well, and about same in February. 2013-2014 season beat 2014-2015 for snowfall in the month of March though. So we basically got the bulk of our snowfall in the first part of the season, with the feeling that we could have really done with more fresh top-ups later on in the main season. There was no snow shortage problems though! Take a look at the Yuzawa relevant data on the main chart page here: Observed snowfall charts You can see how December looks very different over the last two seasons. Let’s hope that we get another impressive snowfall for 2015-2016 season. --- As with many popular regions of Japan, Yuzawa also enjoyed a noticeable increase in the number of non-Japanese on the slopes. A trend which will no doubt continue over the coming years. --- The SnowJapan Yuzawa Now reports will of course be back in time for the 2015-2016 season and no doubt Kagura will be aiming for a late November opening once again. Thank you for reading the reports this season and in particular to those of you who send us some feedback - not only for the Yuzawa Now reports but on other areas of the website. We hope you enjoyed them and that they proved to be helpful. --- Fuji Rock Festival in Naeba The next big event in Yuzawa is the famous Fuji Rock Festival which is held over at Naeba from Friday 24th July until Sunday 26th July. The line-up this year at Fuji Rock includes Foo Fighters, Muse, Noel Gallagher's Flying Birds, Motorhead, Ride, Belle and Sebastian, Ash, Johnny Marr, Happy Mondays - and literally many more, including a fair chunk of Japanese artists. Here’s to a successful festival and co-operating weather conditions.
