The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It's one of those “quiet before the storm” days in Myoko. It’s sunny with just a few patches of cloud, the views are great but that wind from the southwest is just a little too steady. The national news has already begun warning about the possibility of very heavy snow tomorrow for Niigata, Nagano and other prefectures (I think we can stick with those two, since Myoko is kind of stuck into Nagano on three sides). My favorite weather site on the web, though, shows some genuinely crazy winds tomorrow, with that northwest wind from Vladivostok coming straight here (an excellent sign of heavy snowfall) being interrupted by major winds screaming in down from the east Korean coast, then sweeping to the east and along the coast. I am really interested to see what that will bring. A few years ago there was a similar warning for our area, but the winds came along the coast rather than hitting the frontline mountains (like Mt. Myoko), burying Joetsu City in a record snowfall that paralyzed the city for days, while we had some sun and gently falling flakes here in the mountains. The seasoned weather watcher’s opinion? Get ready for any possibility! We might be up to our waists in the resort, lifts might close—or we might not see that much. As of 8:30am I had measured another 13cm of snowfall since my previous report. Today is going to be milder than it has been and will probably warm up into low positive numbers. But it will be getting colder again tomorrow and it's looking like there is a chance that wind might get to be rather pesky over the next few days. For now, we're ok and all lifts are running. This morning visibility is ranging from pretty good to limited/poor in places. ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base 6am: -5℃, 20cm snow in last 12hrs. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Hello from a cold Shiga Kogen. At 3am this morning Yakebitaiyama was reporting 30cm of fresh snowfall since 4pm yesterday. Add to that the snow during the day and we got a pretty large amount. Some proper good snow since yesterday along with a wind that was blowing it about. One of those days. It's calmer this morning. Still a lot of cloud around but there's clearer skies in some places. The webcam at Kumanoyu is showing some lovely blue sky and very inviting looking runs. Many look untouched, too. There should be some excellent conditions for those lucky to be around this morning. Tomorrow should be much busier as it's the start of a long weekend. Monday is Coming of Age day and a national holiday. We should expect clear skies tomorrow with a return to snow forecast for Sunday. It’s one of those days where, if you’re going into fresh snow, even just on the side of the resorts, you should go with a friend (snowboarders especially!). End up head down in the snow, and sometimes people can’t get out alone.... Great day to get out on the slopes (although it was a lot of fun yesterday in that fresh!). Hakuba Cortina is reporting 25cm of fresh snowfall up top since yesterday. There's smaller snowfall numbers at other ski areas, but a fresh layer out there to enjoy. We have a 3-day long weekend coming up as Monday is Coming of Age day. Usually it's one of the busiest of the season and with clear skies expected tomorrow morning, it is probably a good idea to aim for early lifts tomorrow. Due to be milder, too. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Nozawa. The snowfall numbers from the ski area below are from yesterday afternoon. Apologies that I was not able to check any published numbers during the daytime. We've had good snowfall since yesterday. Good heavy snowfall at times. This morning we have cloud around the mountain but there's some blue sky away from it and forecasts tell us to expect some clearer conditions as the day progresses. The Japan Meteorological Agency measuring point, close to Karasawa, has 35cm of fresh snowfall over the last 24 hours. My own measurement since early yesterday morning is 42cm. Tomorrow is the start of a long weekend as Monday is a national holiday. Sun is forecast from the start so it should be a good day - and popular, too. Expect a lot of people! We should get back to snow falling from the skies on Sunday and, again, perhaps heavy at times. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 23cm Snowfall at base this season 354cm Our positive January snowfall news continues with a good fresh layer again over the last 24 hours, with more consistently lined up on the forecast for the coming week. Here's how much snowfall the ski areas are reporting since yesterday morning: Niseko Hirafu: 35cm Niseko Hanazono: 25-28cm Niseko Annupuri: 15cm Niseko Village: 0cm (I know I might be being a bit naughty putting the Niseko Village 'non-reporting' there. I won't persist with that much longer as I think the point has been made). It's interesting to see the Niseko Avalanche Report reporting 40cm of fresh again. As I have said before, numbers aside, we can all enjoy some lovely snow conditions right now. So... lets. All lifts are now moving at Niseko Tokyu Grand Hirafu, with the Ace Number 4 pair lift at last joining the party. (Lazy!) ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base 6am: -9℃, light wind, 40cm snowfall. Moiwa 800m: -12.3℃, NW9.1m/s, 40cm new snow, snowdrift development. Annupuri 1100m: -14.7℃, WNW5.6m/s. Village 1000m: -13.3℃, NNW3.9m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -13.9℃, N2.7m/s. Hanazono 800m: -11.0℃, NNW4.2m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape NW12m/s, Kamui Cape NW14m/s, 1013hPa, 2.2m waves. Isobar are moving apart and ocean waves are dropping. Winds have dropped at 1000m with snowdrifts developing and stabilizing. Although it’s been heavy snowfall, observations and testing indicate a general low avalanche risk. Gates will be open at limited times. Please follow the patrol’s decisions. Outside of the gates is NOT part of the ski resort. Yesterday, someone lost control and fell into Moiwa Mikaeri creek. The Moiwa Patrol, familiar with the area, rescued the victim alive. We are grateful to all those who cooperated in the rescue. Rescue efforts in low temperatures require immediate action. Skiing off-course in Niseko is not officially permitted. However, under the Niseko Rules, it is possible only with the understanding and common sense of everyone. Don’t overestimate your knowledge or skills. Stay out of the valley bottoms, these are avalanche paths. Avoid stimulating knolls or cornice slopes. Avalanches are natural phenomena. Accidents don’t happen without people. Do you have a beacon? Do you have a probe, shovel, emergency food, and rope? There is no safety in this sport. Have a nice day. The avalanche that occurred the day before yesterday below Hirafu summit is believed to have been caused by heavy accumulations below the ridge due to strong southerly winds.
