Today is Day 1 of the Bonchi Powder Festival, kicking off at 6:00 PM in the Gondola parking lot. Tonight features taiko drum, traditional local dance featuring brave shirtless men, a bonfire, and a firework show at 8:00. There will be a ton of food booths from local restaurants so you can just have dinner there. Day 2 features a milk drinking contest, Japanese hip-hop, and the Jinbajin World Championships!! Another bright morning here with quite a lot of cloud, with blue sky and some sunshine. I am not able to report any cm of fresh snow this morning. Snow is, however, on forecasts across the coming several days. I'm going to have some more toast and then sit down and put some thoughts together for a monthly recap. I'm looking forward to seeing how the numbers stack up. All being well, I'll post that in the report tomorrow. ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base 6am: -5℃, light wind, trace new snow. Moiwa 800m: -9.7℃, trace new snow, good visibility. Annupuri 1100m: -11.2℃, WNW4.8m/s. Village 1000m: -9.9℃, NNW3.5m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -10.5℃, WNW7.2m/s(20m/s @ 2am), trace new snow. Coastal data: Benkei Cape NW12m/s, Kamui CapeWSW10m/s, 1013hPa, wave 2.5m. The isobars are wide, a high pressure to the west and low to the east, ocean wave heights are slightly high and light northerly winds on the mountain are bringing a little snow. Destruction tests indicate that slabs are consolidated and stable, and the overall avalanche risk is low. Peak gates are expected to be open. Please listen to patrol and prepare before going out of bounds. Do not duck ropes in search of fresh snow and never enter the strictly off limits areas Haru no Taki, Yunosawa or Anbetsu Valley. One set of tracks will lead others to follow and an accident will occur. Niseko is not indifferent to accidents off the trails. In the event of an accident, we will work with the police and fire department to carry out swift rescue operations. However, everyone needs to be aware that accidents can be fatal and the most important thing is to avoid them in the first place. Always be vigilant. Even so, there are many accidents. Once again, be aware and understand Niseko Rules. Off piste is rough. Be careful of losing control and hitting a tree. Be careful of falling into creeks. The water is cold and trees always win. Talk about a turnaround from the start of January; we’re ending the month with, well, almost too much snow (can’t happen! you say... oh there’s a lot of snow to move around out there). Lots of roofs overloaded with snow, and no sun to help bring it down. Be careful under there, both visitors and snow throwers! Lots of people get buried under roofs. Temperatures have also been cold this latter half of the month, creating some really good snow conditions. It’s still pretty unsettled, so, once again, going out with a friend would be a really good idea (go in headfirst and you have someone to help you get out, especially if you’re a boarder). We can also expect lots of sluffing out in the side/backcountry, so look before you head into a steep section. We did have a bit of snow falling yesterday afternoon, but it didn't amount to much of anything. Where I was, anyway. I can just about justify the 1cm in this report. This morning we have a mix of cloud and blue sky, and some sun too. And it is actually snowing lightly at Hanazono, and it does feel like there's an increasing amount of cloud. Would be nice to get a few cm of fresh in by tomorrow in time for my end of January 2026 'deadline'! The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning. Some good snowfall again since yesterday morning and it is snowing still this morning and will probably continue into tomorrow. Perhaps we are past the peak of this particular snowy front. I'll try not to mention too often, but I continue to be confused by the official snowfall numbers. 75cm at Nagasaka, with less up at Yamabiko and Uenotaira? It seems unlikely and I can't report that much. The JMA (Japan Meteorological Agency) measurement for the past 24 hours, location close by Karasawa, is 37cm. The official site numbers somehow don't feel as consistently updated as they have been in the past... but, anyway, I'll post them as best I can (below). Back to snow this morning and about 15cm to report (resort saying 15-20cm on the slopes) and after temperatures warming up a bit yesterday afternoon we're back to very cold conditions this morning. It's snowing still though just lightly at the moment and grey clouds all around. Clearer skies maybe tomorrow morning and not as cold, followed by a bit of a warm-up around Wednesday/Thursday and maybe even some rain and followed by snow. So a bit all over the place at the moment. We'll just have to keep a daily eye on things!
