Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata

New snowfall at base 1cm
Snowfall at base this season 866cm

Posted on Sunday 1st February 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here.

Got out into the backcountry yesterday; the bushes are pretty well covered, there was a lot of snow and some crazy winds at the top. But great to really be able to enjoy the ride on some pretty dense but fun powder snow.

It was pretty quiet, too, and not a foreigner in sight—just a handful of Japanese enthusiasts. Seems like the international crowd tends to want to do the “tunnel run,” the sidecountry trip that takes you back through the tunnel into Akakura Onsen. And the location of the snowboard video team-triggered avalanche on the 25th that closed the road. For me, that peaceful Myoko backcountry in the beeches and Erman’s birches, please (this is a sacred mountain, you know!).

Snow has started again, although quite light at the moment.
