The warmth loosened up the snow after a crispy start and a lot of people around to enjoy what was a spring-like day on the mountain. It is going to be colder today. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A final report from a rainy Myoko: all resorts are now officially closed and a snowy season has come to an end. All resorts are now closed for 2024-2025 It’s not always easy to tell the conditions at the resorts; too many of their websites bury the information you need and put it under the stuff they want to sell you. A few don’t even bother to put up daily info at all, but link to national weather websites. I guess this is the last rant for the season, too, but just be assured that we are here to fight the good fight in providing you with quality, comprehensive snow condition information. See you in fall. Season recap (originally posted on 4th April 2025) Snow was the big theme for this season; it just kept falling. I was looking over my snow plowing records, and realized that there were 51 days where the machines had to run (and a few where I could have, but when it was less than 20cm, well, sometimes you let nature do the clearing. Lower carbon footprint and all that). The big snows in terms of depth were in December and February, but there were plenty of days in January where there was a good snowfall, too. It’s staying cold, too, so while the snow walls have shrunk somewhat and it’s easier to drive without inching up to intersections to peek around the corner, there’s still a lot of snow out there. In short, excellent snowshoeing lies ahead (and it looks like sunny and warm weather tomorrow). The elephant in the room (and, don’t forget, we did have elephants resident in this area until about 20,000 years ago) is the big potential development that is starting at Madarao and Suginohara. I know many readers have voiced concerns, and we do worry about the area losing the Japanese-ness that is a big draw for Myoko. No offense to our friends in Niseko and Hakuba, but compared to those places, Myoko is more of a centralized town, with a deep history in Japan, and as one of the earliest resorts in the country. Things have changed; we’re already at a point where most restaurants in town aren’t Japanese owned, as are many/most of the hotels, especially in Akakura. The Japan Times recently ran a good article on the potential changes in Myoko, with locals expressing their concerns about the way things have changed, as well as about the future. It’s funny for those of us who actually live here year-round (and it’s nearly 30 years now for your writer), as things “go back to normal” about this time of year. We start to see our neighbors again, since we’d always be stuck in cycles of plowing and staying indoors for the winter anyway. Spring comes, the cherries bloom, and local people (not the herds of young foreign ski instructors) start to be visible on the streets again. And, the way things are going globally right now, who knows what lies ahead? What would a big recession mean? Ahhh.... hey, this is a beautiful place. Tough to live in (snow throwers ain't cheap, and you can't NOT plow when you get 60cm), really not the best summer vacation location (we are a rain forest, really). The people still are nice, it IS Japan (no offensive Antipodeans, but I want to live in Japan, not Australia. Nice to have you visit, though!). Good food, too... The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Just a quick report today to celebrate the official first day of the 2012/2013 season in Hakuba. Unfortunately, it's raining today but some eager souls have been making their way up on the lifts to get in those first turns of the season. We are hoping for more snow overnight though and into tomorrow morning so hopefully not too much damage out on the slopes... though it may still be wet down in the village. Hakuba Goryu, Hakuba 47 and Happo-one plan to be open again today as today. Going into next week it seems more clearer skies on the forecast and not much snow to expect. We'll have to see what the plans are for the resorts... All depends on where you chose to be. I enjoyed some very fine conditions out there and felt there was more fresh than the resorts were reporting early morning. Some of you were probably beginning to think that there wouldn't be any Hakuba Now reports this season. But here I am, and I'm happy to report that I will be here to bring you reports from Hakuba once again this winter season. There are a few adjustments this time round. But I'll explain those to you next week, when I might even be able to report some snow from over the weekend... particularly at higher elevations. Right now there's a snow cover across our beautiful mountainous backdrop, and the ski slopes have that lovely late autumn look thing going on. The big ski areas in the area will basically be opening as soon as there is enough snow to do so. Hopefully in the first chunk of December. No fresh snow to report this morning and some cloudier skies to start this Sunday morning. In fact, it looks rather poor visibility higher up early on. Top lifts are on hold at the start of the day due to rather blowy south-westerly winds. It is noticeably mild, too. Looks like all of Japan is having a very spring-like weekend. I noticed a spring-themed advertisement on the TV last night, too. I protest!!! Moiwa 800m: -0.2℃, SSW3.6m/s, thick fog, poor visibility, no new snow. Annupuri 1100m: -1.9℃, SSW6.3m/s. Village 1000m: -1.0℃, SSW7.6m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -1.3℃, SSE8.4m/s. A low pressure system is moving north over the Sea of ​​Japan, bringing warm air and snowmelt to the lower mountain. There are strengthening southerly winds above 1000m and thick fog below 700m. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. Lots of cloud yesterday. And lots of cloud/fog around still early this morning, with what looks like limited visibility up on the ski slopes that remain open. The big news of the day is from Happo-one.... today (1st May) is the last day of the season for the ski lifts at that ski area. Some lifts will remain open at Happo-one from tomorrow, but not for skiing/snowboarding. Temps down in the village are expected to rise above 10C this afternoon and tomorrow. (It's actually quite cold early on, but should be warming up fairly quickly). I'm going to put that thought out of my mind and get out to have me some fun this morning. Maybe one less layer! Expect a busy weekend. I am a bit early today for some of the numbers to be updated.
