The ski area isn't reporting any cm of snow, but I am adding 2cm from what we got yesterday morning. The weekly forecast seems to be dominated by sun and cloud, with perhaps a sprinkling of snow at times if we are lucky. With a few weeks left in the season, let's hope temps don't rise too much and we have some good weather to enjoy it while we can. It is hard to believe the major earthquake event was 15 years ago. I remember it vividly. And that is perhaps a good thing. A moment to reflect. I've had my toast and I'm off out to enjoy some first tracks. ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -7°C, no snowfall, clear. Moiwa 800m: -7.5°C, NE 3.9m/s, no snowfall, good visibility. Annupuri 1100m: -9.8°C, NNE 4.8m/s. Village 1000m: -8.5°C, NNE 6.4m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -9.3°C, N 5.8m/s. Hanazono 800m: -6.7°C, NW 1.6m/s. Sea of Japan Benkei Cape: WNW 5m/s. Kamui Cape: ENE 2m/s, 1027hPa, wave height unknown. Under a high-pressure system with no pressure gradient, strong cold air is flowing in from the north. Based on observations and data evaluation, no full-depth avalanches have occurred and the snowpack is stable. The overall avalanche risk is low. With the good weather, all summit gates will open. Moiwa Gate 6 is expected to open during the morning; follow the instructions of the ski patrol. On open steep slopes above 1000m, the surface crust may break, potentially causing shallow surface avalanches. These slides, known as “magic carpet” avalanches, are triggered by riding stimulation and are dangerous due to their high speed. In the past, one person lost their life in such an avalanche in the Backbowl sidewalls. Ride one by one in the out of bounds areas. In the afternoon, the snow will soften and the risk of full-depth avalanches will increase. Use particular caution on the west ridge toward the Goshiki side. In the past, avalanches there have reached the prefectural road. Do not stay at the bottom of the slopes or gullies. Use similar caution in Moiwa Bowl and Mikaeri Bowl. Today is the anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake. On March 11, 2011, more than 17,000 precious lives were taken by the earthquake and tsunami that struck the Tohoku coast. We must never let this memory fade. In the end, though, there wasn’t that much more snow on the ground, at least at the base level. I’ll add a few more cm to the total, even though not much has remained to this morning. It's largely cloudy but there's some blue sky away from the mountain, perhaps it will get clearer. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Nozawa. It's a cloudy start to the day but they might part with some forecasts telling us to expect some sun. We did get some snow yesterday, though it wasn't much more than a dusting down low. The ski area appears to be reporting up to 3cm (since yesterday afternoon) and the trees on the Yamabiko webcam look like they have a nice coating of white. Feels like there might be more than that up there. We should probably think of any fresh snow from now as a real bonus. As noted in Yuzawa Now this morning, temperatures remaining under control and not rising too fast and high is the most realistic wish now as we head into spring season proper. Nice and chilly, the sun is out, some friendly cloud hanging around. And not windy. We have received some more snowfall, with ski areas reporting anywhere between 4cm and 13cm across the mountain. (I'm showing you the Niseko Village gondola building webcam image, below, to show you that snow). Talking of Niseko Village, I can't help not mention this. This morning they are suddenly reporting 10cm of fresh snowfall at base and 13cm of snowfall at peak. I almost wish I had kept records*, but they have probably now reported about 50cm across the entire season, on about 5 days. Or something like that. It's really very odd. Anyway, I have some important fun things to do! (* Thankfully, I do still have something of a life and did not go that far). ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base -5°C, light winds, 3cm snowfall. Moiwa 800m: -7.5°C, N 2.5m/s. Annupuri 1100m: -10.1°C, NNW 2.1m/s. Niseko Village 1000m: -8.6°C, N 4.5m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -9.4°C, N 4.5m/s. Hanazono 800m: -7.0°C, N 1.1m/s. Sea of Japan Benkei Cape N 4m/s. Kamui Cape light winds, 1020hPa, wave height unknown. The pressure gradient is weak; both sea and mountain are calm. Cold air has flowed in, bringing 3-5cm of snowfall until dawn. Based on observations, data evaluation, and patrol reports, there is no significant avalanche risk. Gates 2, 3, 4, and 5 above 1000m will be opened. Follow the instructions of the ski patrol. Beyond the gates is not a ski resort. Be fully prepared before heading out-of-bounds. As temperatures rise, the risk of full-depth avalanches will increase in valleys below 800m. In particular, danger from sidewalls and cliff faces is high in strictly prohibited areas such as Haru-no-taki, Yunosawa, and Ambetsu around 700m elevation. Gate 11 at Mizuno-no-sawa has already been closed for this reason. Moiwa Gate 6 will be closed due to the high risk of avalanches from the 700m level of Moiwa Bowl and Mikaeri Bowl. With the changing demographic of visitors, there is an increasing number of people who ignore or disregard the rules, leaving us no choice but to close the gates. Gate opening/closing have been conducted for 20 years based on daily risk assessments. Gates are installed by the ski resorts through applications to the local council and are managed by stationed ski patrols. Their locations and opening/closing status are determined by council standards including administrative oversight; they are not for the purpose of attracting customers or tourism. There is no such thing as absolute safety in this sport. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . We are getting some snow this morning, not a lot and it’s coming down as pretty fine crystals. So I don’t expect that we’ll have much to add to the snowpack (which is getting pretty thin already; on a hike in the woods the tree wells are not very threatening, with maybe 30cm or so of snow around the trunks, and a lot of grass bamboo showing on south-facing slopes). I heard that there is some concern if late-season cross-country race will be able to be held or not. Still, the snow is good at the resorts, with the groomers working hard to keep the snowpack nice and firm and smooth. We are getting close to the end of the season, though, so I’ll try and get some closing information up here shortly. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Hello from Hakuba. It looks like there has been a dusting of snow up high, though Tsugaike is the only place reporting any new cm (1cm). We have a largely cloudy morning early on, but there's some blue sky and sun peeking through in places, too. Some light snow is on forecasts for today. We shall see, though I wouldn't expect much. All most welcome, though. Various ski area news: At Hakuba Happo-one, you can now only ski back down to base at Nakiyama South. More from the ski area itself: "You cannot ski down to the Shirakaba, Kokusai, or Sakka base areas. To return to these locations, please use the downward line of the following lifts: Happo Gondola / Kokusai No. 1 Pair Lift / Sakka Kitaone Quad Lift." The White Resort Hakuba Sanosaka ski area has announced that it will be operating until Sunday 15th March. (That is earlier than planned, due to low snow levels). In more exciting/positive sounding news, it looks like Hakuba Iwatake Snow Field is going to be replacing it's 5th South Lift for the 2027-2028 season. From the picture they released, it looks like it will be a 6-person lift too.
