The risk of full-depth avalanches is increasing on the south east side at 1000m. To avoid an accident do not ski down in the valley bottom. Outside the gates is backcountry, not part of the resort. This is a ski resort and users must abide by the rules. Do not duck ropes or enter restricted areas. This information is issued to prevent avalanche accidents. There is more than one type of avalanche. Most mid winter accidents are caused by surface avalanches, Niseko Rules and this report were implemented to try and reduce them. However, even as accidents decrease, other problems arise. One of them is the spread of accidents to other mountains, which is difficult to address. Reports of more than 80 dead in European avalanches this year. Be aware of avalanches. Do not be overconfident in your knowledge, skills, and equipment. Do not lose your precious life because of something as trivial as an avalanche. It was partly cloudy about an hour ago; it's a bit more cloudy now, especially over Mt. Myoko, but the sun is still out most of the time. That crazy dust from the west is way down, too, which makes things more pleasant (and more visible). Not much to write about, in fact; kind of a slow news day with things winding down. Lots of birds in the trees around the base, though, even the cooing of some doves, a fist for the season. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Gray today, with a pretty steady southwest wind taking out more snow (the wind really does it...). Looks like rain later this afternoon and maybe all the way until Friday. Maybe the rain will get the tree buds starting to open—as long as it’s spring we might as well see the change of seasons! And that is part of the fun of mountain life here. We do get a pretty good amount of rain in the summer, so you have to embrace it. Not so sure on the kosa the dust masses starting in China, Mongolia and Kazakstan and traveling all the way here. It’s a fine dust that comes from desert regions in these countries, including the dried-up Aral Sea, which doesn’t sound good, but also which contains a lot of nasty pollutants (sulfur, heavy metals, soot, and more). All I know here is that, looking toward Mt. Myoko and the sun around 3pm yesterday, the mountains were obscured and the whole sky was white. It's a brighter morning, and a bit bluer too, with a hazy look especially looking over to Mt Yotei. Talking of which, I did get to play a bit of that 'Ghost of Yotei' game. Very pretty, but it all seems a bit too complicated and time-consuming to me. And I couldn't find my house. Clearly it wasn't around in the early Edo period. And neither were the ski lifts and fancy condos. Slightly disappointing. Getting back on topic, here's a new exciting 'feature' for my report in this final stretch: The following lifts are now closed: Hirafu: Ace Number 3 pair, Ace Number 4 pair Village: Morino Chair Annupuri: Jumbo Number 2 pair, Jumbo Number 3 pair (Those lifts not operating does not affect open terrain). ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -2°C, clear. Moiwa 800m: -1.8°C, NNW 5.0m/s. Annupuri 1100m: -3.5°C, NNW 3.9m/s. Niseko Village 1000m: -2.6°C, N 6.6m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -4.0°C, N 10.8m/s. Hanazono 800m: -2.5°C, NNE 2.7m/s. Sea of Japan Benkei Cape: light winds. Kamui Cape: ENE 4m/s, 1018hPa, wave height unknown. Clear skies within a high-pressure system, though north winds are relatively strong in high elevation. With no new snowfall, snowdrifts or significant wind-slab development, the risk of surface avalanches is low. All gates are scheduled to open; follow the instructions of the ski patrol. On open 40-degree slopes around 1200m that have frozen, avalanches caused by crust failure are likely to occur. Use caution. Snowmelt will progress during the day. Be alert for full-depth avalanches in Moiwa Bowl at 800m, the lower sections of the Backbowl West Ridge, and the Goshiki Onsen side of the West Ridge. To avoid accidents, do not stay at the bottom of gullies. Cross creeks and dangerous zones one person at a time with wide intervals. We are now in the last week of the season at both Madarao and Tangram Ski Circus. It's a bit of a grey morning here and feeling rather mild. Evening 'nighta' is now over for the season and we enter 'the last bit'. A few lifts are now closed (Ace 3 and 4 at Hirafu and Morino chair at Village), but does not affect available terrain. Can the two ski areas (that usually remain open until then) remain open until 6th May as planned? Well, Hirafu is still showing 350cm up top (though 90cm at base), so that is actually pretty impressive. Unless it warms up like crazy, I'd say probably yes. But we'll just have to wait and see and find out. ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: +1℃, frozen. Moiwa 800m: -0.6℃, SSE2.9m/s. Annupuri 1100m: -3.9℃, SW3.4m/s. Niseko Village 1000m: -2.6℃, SSW4.5m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -2.8℃, N1.0m/s. Hanazono 800: 0.1℃, NNE6.7m/s. Sea of Japan Benkei cape: South 4m/s, Kamui cape: SW16m/s, 1014hPa, wave height unknown. The wind is strong at Kamui cape and around 1200m elevation. No snowfall has been observed. All gates are scheduled to open. Please follow the ski patrol’s instructions. The out of bounds areas are outside the ski resort boundaries. Beware of the following points: Stay away from the gully bottoms to prevent being caught in glide avalanches, do not stimulate the cornices, traversing under cornices could trigger an avalanche. Cracks are difficult to see from above, if you fall head first on a snowboard you may not be able to self rescue. Never go out of bounds alone. Carry a beacon (transceiver), you may be able to save somebody’s life. The creeks are starting to open and the meltwater is freezing cold. Carry a short rope in case of a fall. The mountain is transitioning to Spring, however it can return to Winter anytime.
