  • Yuzawa Now: Saturday 8th February 2025

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 32cm Snowfall at base this seas 803cm Posted on Saturday 8th February 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Continuing the pattern of the last few days, the morning snow eased off by mid-morning yesterday, but it was snowing again from night and into this morning. Since yesterday there has been a total of another 32cm of snowfall as of 8am. (Maiko Snow Resort is reporting 40cm). It is a cold, snowy and windy morning. Today might not see the break in the snow during the daytime and it is still forecast to continue until at least Monday and possibly even Tuesday. All areas of Kagura are completely closed today due to the weather conditions and only the base area of Naeba (in front of the hotel) is open. GALA Yuzawa is open, though the Southern Area remains unavailable. The Ropeway at Yuzawa Kogen is set to open, perhaps delayed, but the top lift might not be running. The gondola and top Okusoechi pair lift are not opening as planned this morning. Other ski lift delays are possible/likely. Pretty wild conditions out there at the moment and appropriate care should be taken if you venture out. ----------------------- Ski area information for Saturday 8th February 2025 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 18cm Snowfall at base this seas 821cm Posted on Sunday 9th February 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Another 18cm of snowfall since yesterday. (Maiko Snow Resort appears to be reporting up to 30cm on the mountain). As I write this, there is actually a lull in the snowfall (and even a bit of blue sky just to the north), but snow is generally forecast to continue today. Same as yesterday, Kagura ski area is going to be completely closed for the day and the Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa will not be available. The Maiko gondola is also on hold at the start of the day. Other lifts may well be affected. Check before heading out. This snow is due to continue (at least on/off) into Tuesday, with warmer conditions and perhaps some clearer skies on Wednesday. ----------------------- Ski area information for Sunday 9th February 2025 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. • Yuzawa Now: Monday 10th February 2025

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 37cm Snowfall at base this seas 858cm Posted on Monday 10th February 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yet more snow! Our measurement since yesterday morning is 37cm (27cm of that overnight). Kagura is reporting 40cm of fresh snowfall this morning and Maiko Snow Resort is reporting 30cm. A look at snowfall maps indicates that this region, including neighbouring Tsunan and Tokamachi and perhaps Sakae and Nozawa, seems to have received the most in Japan over the last 24 hours. The Tashiro Area of Kagura is going to be closed today and the Kagura Number 1 high speed is on hold. Wind should not be as much of an issue today as it was over the weekend. But due to the large amounts of snow over the last several days, and general weather conditions, other delays or closings are still possible. People are starting to wonder when this snow might might stop, as it is all getting a bit crazy. 203cm of snowfall has been recorded across the last 7 reports. The snow piled up in my garden is now probably around 3m in places. (Hope the trees and fence survive). I'll take some photos of the snow walls once the snow does ease off to show you. As for when it will ease off... perhaps tomorrow might be the start of that. Wednesday is going to be noticeably warmer and possibly a lot of sun, but there is actually some more snow coming on Thursday. Friday and Saturday are looking milder and clearer, though. Some are even saying that this might be the 'last big snow' of the season. It seems too early to be saying that, but nobody knows, of course. If you remember we got quite a lot of snow through March last season (after not so much in February). If you are interested in how different seasons shape up, please take a look around the Snowfall analysis and Seasonal archives tabs at the top of this report. Every winter season seems a bit mad/strange in one way or another. So, no surprises there then! ----------------------- By the way, tomorrow (Tuesday) is a national holiday in Japan. With some people probably taking today off as a holiday, today and tomorrow may well seem busier than normal weekdays. ----------------------- Ski area information for Monday 10th February 2025 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. • Yuzawa Now: Tuesday 11th February 2025

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 42cm Snowfall at base this seas 900cm Posted on Tuesday 11th February 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. This snow just won't stop! There has been another 32cm of snowfall since last night. Adding the 10cm from the daytime yesterday, that is another total of 42cm to report since yesterday morning. Maiko Snow Resort is reporting 40-50cm and is the only number I can find from a ski area this morning. The snow continues, along with some windy conditions and poor visibility. It should ease off and perhaps stop sometime this afternoon or this evening. Maybe. All areas of Kagura are closed today, as is the top section of Yuzawa Kogen (the Ropeway will be open for sightseeing, but you might not be able to see much!). The Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa is still closed and, again, there may be other lifts affected by these ongoing weather conditions. I had a chat with a several ski area managers yesterday, and they all pretty much said the same thing... 'enough!'. I'm sure they'll still want regular top-ups going forward, but we now have very large amounts of snow that will surely take every ski area through to their planned closing dates (and maybe even beyond). That is excellent news, of course. But 'too much snow all at once' is also affecting their business, with people either unable to get here due to traffic issues, people put off by the weather, and lifts having to close. Coping with such large amounts of snow over a period of several days involves a lot of extra effort for them. Gambatte! We might a bit of relief from the snow and get to see some sun tomorrow morning - and then some more snow is due to be falling on Thursday. ----------------------- Ski area information for Tuesday 11th February 2025 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. • Yuzawa Now: Wednesday 12th February 2025

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 10cm Snowfall at base this seas 910cm Posted on Wednesday 12th February 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. * This report replaces the early report that was posted at 7am * The snow has stopped, at last! For now, anyway. The 10cm of fresh reported here is from yesterday. It was a very cold start to the morning, at -6C in town. Since then we have been treated to a beautiful morning with blue skies and sunshine, along with some lovely snow conditions... as you might expect after all that snow over the last week or so. It has quickly warmed up this morning and is now just under +1C in town as of 11:15am. It is still bright, but more of an overcast feel now. Mostly cloudy conditions are likely this afternoon. The Tashiro Area of Kagura is closed as they continue to deal with the snow, as is the top Number 5 romance lift. Same with the Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa (all other areas open). But all other ski areas should be open as normal. It is interesting to see how some of the snow depth numbers have changed today. At some ski areas, they have gone up. At some, they have actually gone down. The latter may just be due to the snow being groomed/compressed, but there may be some 'don't want to scare people away' thinking in the mix there. Obviously, everyone reading this report is nothing but totally excited to hear about and see huge amounts of snow! The weather over the next day or so is also going to be quite interesting and hard to predict. All forecasts point to more fresh snow coming and possibly also strong winds again tomorrow during the day. Possibly enough to affect some lifts again. But before that it is going to be very mild this evening and overnight, and we can expect some rain (in town at least and possibly on the mountains too) through into tomorrow morning. We would very much like to avoid that, or at least keep it to a minimum. Beyond tomorrow, clearer skies are currently generally forecast for the weekend. ----------------------- Ski area information for Wednesday 12th February 2025 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. • Yuzawa Now: Thursday 13th February 2025

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this seas 911cm Posted on Thursday 13th February 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. I woke up at 5am to the very unwelcome sound of heavy rain. It since changed to snow, but coming off the rain it is rather wet. Add some moderate to strong wind to the mix and it is not a very nice morning! It will be getting colder during the day, and hopefully we'll have some fresh snow by tomorrow morning. As probably expected, the weather conditions are affecting operations at quite a few ski areas this morning. Here is what we can find as of 7:50am: All of Kagura Ski Area is going to be closed today. All of GALA Yuzawa is also closed today. The top Kogen section of Yuzawa Kogen will be closed (but the lower town area will be open). The Sunrise Express lift at Ishiuchi Maruyama and a few more lifts there will not be opening as usual. The Gondola and top Okusoechi area of Maiko Snow Resort will also be closed. Only the A and B lifts at Kandatsu will be open. Other lifts at other ski areas are also likely to be closed or running at low speed. Not that many people will probably be wanting to venture out in these conditions, but be very careful if you do. The weather tomorrow should be more friendly and we have calmer (and brighter) weather currently forecast for the weekend. ----------------------- Ski area information for Thursday 13th February 2025 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. • Yuzawa Now: Friday 14th February 2025

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 8cm Snowfall at base this seas 919cm Posted on Friday 14th February 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Things seem calmer this morning, though some ski areas are still warning about wind conditions. The day is starting with a mix of cloud and blue sky over Yuzawa and the neighbouring valley, though forecasts generally say it will mostly just be a cloud day with the chance of some light snow again this afternoon. Maiko Snow Resort is reporting 5-10cm since yesterday and the observed measurement for this report is 8cm. The messaging from Kagura is somewhat unclear early this morning, but it appears to be open only up to the Kagura gondola (via Mitsumata Ropeway), with a question mark over whether the Tashiro Area will be able to open. That ski area has had a really rough week or so in terms of not being able to open. The good to come from that is that there will surely be a lot of snow up there! Other ski areas all appear to be opening. There's nothing to report yet regarding the re-opening of the Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa, but other sections of that ski area are opening as normal. Fine, sunny, calm and rather mild weather is expected tomorrow. (That will probably encourage a lot of people to come for a Saturday trip!) ----------------------- Ski area information for Friday 14th February 2025 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. • Yuzawa Now: Saturday 15th February 2025

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this seas 920cm Posted on Saturday 15th February 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. The 1cm of snow in the report today is from yesterday evening, when it was snowing (actually raining in some places) for a short while. There is not much wind at all and it is rather mild (3.5C in town at 11am). It has been a fine morning since early on. There was more cloud around then, but it has turned into a clear and sunny day with blue skies. The mountains are looking amazing and there seem to be a lot of people around coming to enjoy the fine weather after all the recent snow. The Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa has re-opened this morning, along with the Ropeway connection between GALA and Yuzawa Kogen. There should have been a lot of untouched snow over there this morning! All other ski areas are open as planned. Tomorrow will also be very mild and might also start off with clear skies but cloud over later in the day. And then we should be back to colder conditions and the start of another few days of snowfall from sometime on Monday. ----------------------- Ski area information for Saturday 15th February 2025 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. • Yuzawa Now: Tuesday 18th February 2025

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 35cm Snowfall at base this seas 955cm Posted on Tuesday 18th February 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. The week of forecast snowfall is underway, with latest forecasts predicting that it might well continue through the weekend... and heavy at times (!) This morning the 24 hour measurement was 35cm. (There has been 10cm less than that at SJHQ just to the north of Yuzawa). That is actually less than we were expecting, but there is a lot more on the way. Maiko Snow Resort is reporting 40cm of fresh snowfall. At the time of this report it is snowing moderately with limited to poor visibility, though there have been some periods of clearer conditions at times. Only the Mitsumata Area of Kagura will be open today due to the wind/weather. (Kagura Area and Tashiro Area are closed for the day). All other ski areas appear to be opening but some lifts may be affected. • Yuzawa Now: Wednesday 19th February 2025

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 51cm Snowfall at base this seas 1006cm Posted on Wednesday 19th February 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. The snowfall is getting crazy once again. And it's still set to continue for at least another several days. Last night (7pm) 29cm of snowfall - most coming later in the afternoon/evening - was cleared away, and there's another 22cm there this morning. So that's 51cm for the 24 hours. Maiko Snow Resort is reporting 40-60cm of fresh snowfall since yesterday. All of Kagura is closed today due to the weather conditions. (They are reporting 2m of snowfall at the Tashiro Ropeway station over the last few days!) Yuzawa Kogen Ropeway and the top section of that ski area is also closed for the day and the Southern Area of GALA will be closed. When will the snow stop? Looking at all the available forecasts, it looks like it might be early next week before the snow stops and we get some clearer skies. Before then we will probably get further periods of heavy snow, with it perhaps easing off somewhat at other times. Over 10m of observed snowfall now. That is almost double the snowfall we got the during the entire 2023-2024 season. To think, back in January, longer term forecasts were (I'm pretty sure) saying that February would probably be warmer than usual with less snow than average. ----------------------- Ski area information for Wednesday 19th February 2025 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. • Yuzawa Now: Thursday 20th February 2025

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 62cm Snowfall at base this seas 1068cm Posted on Thursday 20th February 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. As my Myoko friend said yesterday... 'furi-sugi' (too much snow)! I can't remember there ever being as much snow piled up in my garden as there is right now. It's getting to be pretty ridiculous and there is now probably above 4 metres in some places. And, of course, this unusually heavy snowfall is affecting peoples lives in many ways. At the moment, it feels more like 'survival' than thinking about skiing. The ski areas are troubled too... I think it's fair to say that they all now very much want it to stop! At 5pm yesterday there was 35cm of fresh snow at our point and this morning there is another 27cm. That's another 62cm over the last 24 hours. Crazy. Nice and light snow, too. It's not over yet, either. We are likely to get more snow through until around Monday. Hopefully less of it. It is still snowing this morning and currently about -3C in town. As for ski areas... Kagura (all areas) will be closed once again. GALA are trying to open the Central and Northern Areas, but saying that there may be delays. Yuzawa Kogen plans to open from 9:00am and Ishiuchi Maruyama is saying that it will open from 9:30am. Maiko Snow Resort is reporting 40-60cm fresh snow and that they plan to open but will be delayed. There will very likely be other delays. Check before heading out and be super careful if you do actually head out. These are serious conditions. ----------------------- At times like this, we perhaps always should try to remember the times when it isn't snowing a lot and we are praying/dancing for more. Maybe try not to say 'too much'... even if it is! ----------------------- Ski area information for Thursday 20th February 2025 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 32cm Snowfall at base this seas 1100cm Posted on Friday 21st February 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. The snow continues. 10cm by 6pm yesterday and another 22cm this morning. And it is still snowing. That's 180cm of observed snowfall across the last 4 reports. Crazy! Maiko Snow Resort reports 30cm this morning. Relief is due from Tuesday when the skies should be clearing, but there's going to be more snow before then. Perhaps not as much as the last few days, but maybe a fair amount. Some forecasts hint at the chance of some clearer skies from time to time. We shall see. GALA Yuzawa is going to be completely closed for the day today due to the heavy snowfall, as they try to deal with it before the weekend. (Apparently, today is the first time ever that GALA Yuzawa has decided to not open due to heavy snowfall). Kagura is managing to open via the Mitsumata Ropeway up to Kagura Gondola. The Tashiro Area is open up to Tashiro Number 1 quad lift. It looks like Yuzawa Kogen is opening. Once again, other lifts at other ski areas might be delayed/affected.
