The upper mountain is encased in fog, but this should improve during the day and it should be at least partially clear by the afternoon. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Furano region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 4cm Snowfall at base this season 5cm Posted on Monday 23rd November 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . Snow flakes are falling on my head... Furano does seem to have flicked the winter weather switch to on, and the sun is out so hopefully the base will get a bit wet and melty and form just what is needed for long term resort coverage. Indications are good but Mother Nature is a minx. The gravel trucks were out at some point because the roads were treated by 7am when we took these photos. The snow flurries have abated right now, but there should be on-off snow showers for the next two days according to the forecast. Oops, actually, flakes now falling again. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Furano region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 6cm Snowfall at base this season 641cm Posted on Monday 15th February 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . Unfortunately the weather guy was pretty accurate with the forecast yesterday with the resort and town being hit by moderate rainfall, strong winds and warm temperatures. It rained for the whole day turning the town into slush and the tropical blip brought the locals out to chip away at their driveways which is made much easier when it is warmer. Now for the good news. Overnight, temperatures have returned to winter negatives and it is snowing moderately at village level. There has already been 6cm accumulation, and given the amount of precipitation there will be a lot more during today. The heaviest falls will occur from late afternoon onwards. There is a light to moderate wind at base level. Visibility is compromised today due to the heavy snowfall and low cloud rolling down the resort. Underfoot the slopes are going to be icy or frosty due to the thaw freeze we have just been through, however with all the new snow coming our we could be back to a powder base soon. ----------------------- Just as this report going to post winds have picked up and currently the Furano Ropeway is on hold - the Downhill Romance Number 3 lift was on hold for a short while but back running... Best to check with the resort for the very latest if you plan on being out. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Furano region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 8cm Snowfall at base this season 623cm Posted on Wednesday 10th February 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . Yesterday was a day that defined variable. It was foggy on mountain with moderate winds and limited visibility in the morning, then by late morning the winds had dropped and blue sky appeared. If you thought it was warm yesterday you were right, with temperature suddenly rising to +1c at midday and staying there for the afternoon. This morning is calm, although moderate winds are on the forecast. Maybe the weather guy got it wrong. There has been 8cm of accumulation of pretty heavy snow in the village. Up higher on the mountain it will definitely be lighter though. Temperatures are still pretty warm with -1c here in the village at 8am. From Friday evening the forecast is still predicting a tropical event, and heavy rain for Saturday evening and Sunday morning. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Furano region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 635cm Posted on Friday 12th February 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . It will be a great morning on the mountain. The resort has clear skies above and wind conditions are calm which was evidenced by a hot air balloon making a free flight across the valley this morning. There has been a light dusting of snow since yesterday. Temperatures have started off wintery cold with -11c recorded at the top of the resort. During the day the temperatures will rise, and from tonight they are forecast to go into positive territory through until Sunday morning. These warmer temperatures are predicted to bring rain rather than snow. We will just have to wait and see what eventuates and hopefully we can scrape through with a bit of fresh snow instead of wet rain. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Furano region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 4cm Snowfall at base this season 645cm Posted on Tuesday 16th February 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . Good news this morning. It is snowing at a moderate rate and there has been 4cm accumulation overnight. The snowflakes are very fine so there is not as much build up on the ground as would be expected for the rate of precipitation. The snowfall should continue throughout today. Temperatures are back to winter and it sure feels cold outside compared to the tropical blip that we have just experienced. The slopes are still hard under the layer of fresh. The groomed areas are skiing pretty nicely, but the ungroomed areas are very rough underfoot and Premium Zone is closed for today. Wind is present but is light. Strong winds are expect from Wednesday afternoon onwards. Earlier on the visibility was poor due to the snow and cloud rolling down to the village, however the low cloud has gone and there is some sun shining down upon the resort. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Furano region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 17cm Snowfall at base this season 667cm Posted on Thursday 18th February 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . The heavy snow that was on the forecast has arrived and the village area has received a whopping 17cm overnight. Needless to say we are looking at a serious powder morning on the mountain, and with 17cm in the village the depth on the resort itself is going to be much much more. It is still snowing heavily but the precipitation rate will lighten up as the day progresses. There is low cloud on the resort, and combined with the snow falling , means that visibility is not perfect, but still pretty good. There is no detectable breeze in the village right at the moment. Tomorrow, temperatures are going to be warmer and around the base may even just break into the positives during the day. It looks like the sun will be out during the first part of the day. On Saturday night there is another significant fall of snow predicted. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . Looks like another great day on the resort. The morning lows were below zero, but mild, and have already risen into positive territory which is evidenced by the dripping water running off roofs and the roads being particularly slippery with a bit of melt on top of the snow. There is high cloud cover over Furano, but it is well above the ski resort and visibility is good with just a little flat light in places. There has been a nice little top up of 2cm fresh snow, which will ski nicely during the morning but be a bit heavier than usual due to the warmer temperatures. There is no breeze around the village.
