The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . It's great to see a bit of fresh snowfall here in Shiga Kogen this morning. A bit wet as it's relatively mild, but snow all the same. And there may be a bit more snow for us to get before we arrive at the weekend. Fingers crossed everyone. It is snowing right now. 'Planned closing dates' information for resorts in Shiga Kogen. Basically: - all ski areas in Shiga Kogen plan to be at least part open until the end of March; - a bunch of resorts will be open on specific dates (usually weekends and Golden Week) once we get into April; - the remaining resorts will be open daily until 6th May and beyond that (they will close when there's not enough snow left to ski or board!) • Niseko Now: Saturday 17th March 2018

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 1247cm Posted on Saturday 17th March 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning all. And there's some more fresh snow for me to report this morning. 5cm of it in fact here near base and no doubt more than that at higher elevations on the mountain. I wonder how much. Investigations are required. It does feel rather more wintery and it is generally a cold and cloudy start to the day. Temperatures are forecast to not quite rise to zero during the day. Perhaps a little milder tomorrow and more sunshine. There are just two more days of night time skiing operations left now - today and tomorrow. Rasuto chansu! --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Niseko base 6am: -7℃, 10cm snowfall. Moiwa 800m: -8.3℃, WSW7m/s, 20cm snowfall, light snowdrifts. Annupuri 1150m: -10℃, W10m/s, 15cm snowfall. 440cm snowpack at 1000m elevation. Hirafu peak: -10℃, W5m/s, 10cm snowfall. Benkei cape: NNW11m/s, Kamui cape W9m/s, 1024hPa, 1.0m waves. The isobars gradient became a little steep during the night and generated 15-20cm new snow fall overnight. Snowdrift development is small, wet snow through to 20cm. The surface below 800m is frozen and the groomers are having a hard time maintaining the slopes. So called “potato fields” are present in many spots. 30cm of smaller wet surface slab slides are to be expected in leeward knolls and steep slopes above 900m. Better not stimulate knolls and cornices. Decent snowfall since a while, the mountain is back to winter. Peak gates are expected to open. Listen to patrol’s advices, be prepared and step out of bounds from the gates. Beware of creeks, holes and cracks. Stay away from valley bottoms and in order to avoid glide avalanches. Quickly move away from steep slopes. No chances to outrun an avalanche. Avalanches are naturally happening, and would not be a problem as long as nobody is caught in one. The is not bad. Have a nice day. --- Saturday 17th March 2018 Resort specific information (operations subject to change): Niseko Grand Hirafu & Niseko HANAZONO Resort Lifts scheduled to be operating: - All lifts should be operating as planned (King Number 2 lift not operating) Official snow depth: - Top: 500cm - Base: 210cm Niseko Annupuri Lifts scheduled to be operating: - All lifts should be operating as planned Official snow depth: - Top: 440cm - Base: 220cm Niseko Village Lifts scheduled to be operating: - All lifts should be operating as planned (Country Road Chair lift not operating) Official snow depth: - Top: 430cm - Base: 220cm Niseko Now 2017-2018 season Data as of Saturday 17th March 2018 Total snowfall at base so far 1247cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 96 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 45cm (31st December) November 2017 snowfall 188cm reported on 11 days December 2017 snowfall 406cm reported on 27 days January 2018 snowfall 305cm reported on 26 days February 2018 snowfall 299cm reported on 24 days March 2018 snowfall 49cm reported on 8 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Kutchan/Niseko. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . It is colder this morning. The warmth was kind of nice, but it was too warm for too long which of course is not the best friend of snow. Anyway this morning it is raining early on but expected to be sleet or perhaps snow later as it gets a little colder still during the morning. I can't see anything being reported but perhaps a dusting of snow higher up. Limited visibility too. Tomorrow we are going to see more sunshine. • Niseko Now: Friday 16th March 2018

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 3cm Snowfall at base this season 1242cm Posted on Friday 16th March 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here After the rain we got yesterday, I am happy to be able to report some fresh snow this morning. Just a bit - I am measuring 3cm - and light snow falling as I prepare the report. So not a total reset of course, but hopefully there will be some more as you go higher up. There's some snow on the forecast too on and off in the coming days, so fingers crossed! --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Niseko base 6am: -3℃, 5cm snowfall. Moiwa800m: -5.5℃, WNW7.9m/s. Benkei cape NNE13m/s, Kamui cape ENE3m/s, 1012hPa, 2.3m waves. 3-5cm new snow is blanketing the mountain. 20cm snowdrift just below ridgeline in 800m western area leeward slopes. Surface slab avalanche risk is moderately high in slopes above 900m. Caution is required in open steep slopes. New snow is pretty good but shallow, beware of overspeeding, falling into cracks and hitting trees. All gates are expected to open. Glide avalanche from 1000m upper cornice/snowdrift slopes are to be highly expected. Drastic changes in temperature can also trigger those slides. Stay away from valley bottoms. There are no chances to override a glide avalanche. Creeks are also swelling with the snowmelt. Falling from snowbridges could easily lead to crucial situation. Cross valley/creeks carefully. It’s always nice to have everything a little more pristine and white, even if fresh snow is kind of a pain if you’re going off into the woods (powder or settled snow, I say). The snow will have a good chance to settle in the coming days, though, as the freezing level once again rises above the peak of Mt. Myoko and we get sun, sun, sun. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 1239cm Posted on Monday 12th March 2018 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Hello and good morning. Monday morning once again. And I am happy to be able to bring you news of fresh snowfall on the ground at base. I have just about 5cm to report and it is still snowing now as I am putting this report together. There's not much wind that I can tell and not being reported by the ski resorts either so I would expect everywhere to be open as well as the gates. We might even get some sunshine today so it should be a decent day. Warmer temperatures are likely tomorrow along with the chance of some rain, so keep an eye on that if you are making cunning plans for the next few days. --- Niseko Avalanche Report: Niseko base 6am: -2℃, 5cm snowfall. Moiwa800m: -3.7℃, NW0.5m/s, Annupuri 1000m snowpack 440cm. Hirafu peak: -5℃, light wind, 5cm snowfall. Benkei cape N13m/s, Kamui cape NNE8m/s, 1016hPa, 0.6m waves. A small low-pressure passed and brought cold air inflow with snowfall from the north. The mountain is blanketed with a thin layer of new snow. Visibility is pretty bad in some spots up above 1000m as cold/warm air mass is relocating. The overall avalanche risk is low, all gates are expected to open. Please listen to the patrol’s advice and be well prepared before stepping out of bounds. The snow underneath the new snow can be a bit tricky to ski, please be careful. Many cracks are forming in south facing steep/cliff slopes in all elevation. Glide avalanche hazard is raising especially in Hirafu O-hiroma, Haru no Taki, Mikaeri bowl naka-one area. Glide avalanches due to temperature variation could also occur suddenly, even without any prominent cracks, in far-Higashi One, Backbowl and upper Osawa. Better not stay put under steep slopes and at valley bottoms. The snow in the trees is pretty good. Thin surface slab slides may occur in open steep faces. Please stay vigilant anytime. Still pretty good levels at most of the ski areas, so no panic just yet (with a little over three weeks left in the season). Snow today and maybe a bit tomorrow, but spring is coming back in the new week, as that freezing level heads up higher than the peak of Mt. Myoko. Lots of sun, too, so at least if it isn't going to snow...
