As at report time, the sun is out at base with misty conditions further up, but, on the far-right side (summit/Utopia/Kurohime) it is snowing. Take your pick! The way it was snowing at the end of yesterday, the amount of fresh snow today at 3cms is disappointing, however, the snow condition is very good. It is a National Holiday today so, all in all, visitors should be pleased with this long weekend. It's a really cold morning and in some areas of the region the sun is breaking through. Lovely. As if there is no cares in the world. Lots of snow again overnight. Kumanoyu report 30cm. Yakebitaiyama report 20-30cm. I report 26cm. And as I said, top quality stuff. Lovely and light. It would seem we're through the peak of this batch of snow storm and this week we might enjoy more clearer skies than cloudy, particularly mid week. I hope it remains cold and we can keep and enjoy this precious gift. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba and there's more snow to report. This morning the new snowfall being reported by the ski areas is 15-20cm on upper areas. Nice. Many of the total snowfall numbers are now over 5m. It's lovely quality snow too. Light snow has been falling this morning but it has stopped (outside my window here anyway) and the forecast is for mostly just cloudy skies with a chance of occasional light snow. That is what is on the menu for tomorrow too. As I write this it feels like it might be trying to clear in places and getting brighter. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . Good morning from Madarao. Some crazy snow scenes from north of us nearer the coastline in Joetsu the last few days. They have been on the end of a somewhat unexpected pounding of heavy snowfall. This morning Madarao is reporting 30cm and I have measured 34cm. This week we will probably get to see some clearer skies, particularly on Wednesday if most forecasts are correct. :) ----- It seems that both Madarao and Tangram have cancelled plans for further night skiing this season due to the coronavirus related state of emergency situation in Tokyo and the surrounding prefectures. Tangram are also going to be stopping the Number 6 lift and closing the Number 1 lift at 4:00pm (rather than 4:15pm) on weekdays. The little notice window on the home screen of my iPad was saying "Heavy snowfall warning" yesterday, but at 10pm or so the stars were out. Another day of heavy snow on the coast, less so up here, I thought. But early morning revealed round mounds of cars and 50cm of snow — beautiful, sparlkly, amazing snow. Powder snow. It's actually a bit much for those thinking about going offpiste today, in fact, with the risk of loose snow avalanches much higher than yesterday. Think of getting caught in slide of light loose snow that then carries you into a narrow valley... yes, wait for it to settle a bit! Hard to tell about conditions at some places, especially Lotte Arai, where they don't post the lifts that will be open during the day, but the current conditions, so only Arai Gondola and Zendana Lift now shown as operating. The coastline got absolutely pounded — the prefectural TV news said that Joetsu got 283 cm, although I think that's for the entire storm cycle (but still shockingly deep). We had some blue skies and a few snow showers through the day, but no major accumulation until this morning. Not going to say no to 23cm and counting, though.... The latest Niseko Now report can be found here My oh my. Tons of fresh snow. I am hearing that controversial comment from some people - 'too much snow'. Sounds silly, right? Mostly from people involved in the fun task of shovelling it out of the way, watching skiers and snowboarders walk over to first lifts. Others are worried that some less experienced people might get carried away with it and face some real dangers. As the Avalanche Report below states... 'maybe a little too deep'. Be excited; always take care. So this morning I am measuring 33cm of snow since my report yesterday. And there's going to be more than that in places, especially at higher elevations (60cm being mentioned below). The ski areas themselves are reporting 15-40cm across the mountain, though not moving those snow depth numbers much. It remains extremely cold and I am happy to report that wind is not an issue and so lifts should be opening as planned this morning. Visibility, though, is limited. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Benkei cape: WNW10m/s, Kamui cape: WNW10m/s 1010hPa, 1.4m waves. Hanazono1000m: -16.8℃, ENE0.7m/s. Hanazono720m: -13.1℃, W6.4m/s, Moiwa800m: -14.3℃, WNW4.0m/s, 60cm snowfall in 12h. Annupuri1100m: -17℃, W3.5m/s. Yu no sawa1100m: -16.4℃, WSW1.9m/s, Mizu no sawa top: 15.6℃, WNW1.9m/s. Kutchan weather station: -15.0℃, E1.2m/s, 151cm snow depth, 1011.4hPa. Moiwa base: -13℃, light wind, 60cm snowfall in 12h, 30cm in 6h. A westerly 10m/s wind has kept blowing under a moderate wintery pressure distribution and made cold air flow in. The snow has kept falling, up to 60+cm throughout the mountain. Snowdrifts have developed slowly under 1300m elevation, made cornices grow at the Backbowl’s sidewall and a thick knoll is present under the deposited snowdrift. Large scale surface slab avalanche hazard is still highly considerable in those aspects. Stay away from the Backbowl even if the peak gates open. The general avalanche risk below 1000m elevation seems relatively low, however unpredictable accidents can occur in winter mountains. The snow is good but maybe a little too deep. Better not venture out of the gates without carrying snowshoes or skins. Powder baskets are recommended on ski poles. Gate 8 in Annupuri is scheduled to open today. Listen to the ski patrol’s instructions before stepping out of the gate. Do not go ride the cornice slopes and never stay at the bottom of the gully. One avalanche will sweep through the bottom. Carry a beacon, probe and shovel and wear a helmet. We hope we can end the day without accidents. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Nozawa. It's cold and snowy once again. Overnight 15-18cm being reported by Nozawa Onsen on top of the snow that fell during the daytime yesterday. That gives us close on another 30cm fresh snow being reported from the upper areas of the mountain. Goes without saying that the snow conditions right now are excellent. Interestingly, still not much of a wind, so it doesn't feel 'stormy'. It also doesn't feel like a normal January 3 day long weekend but it was never going to be given the circumstances. But for those who are able to, there's a real treat out there. Snow should ease off later on and tomorrow mostly cloudy. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Good morning from Shiga Kogen. It is really coming down at the moment. Cold. Lovely quality snow, and about 22cm of it and counting just measured. Yakebitaiyama were reporting 10cm of it and Kumanoyu 20cm, as of 7am. Will be more than that now with the rate it is coming down. I see that Kumanoyu seem to have shortened their operating hours slightly, due to the coronavirus situation. I'm no expert but I can't see how doing that changes much, but... I have not been able to check all of them but there might be similar small changes going on. If I hear of any I will let you know. I wasn't being particularly 'positive' or 'negative'. I was simply commenting on the current (snow) situation... which happily is really good! One real advantage of not twisting myself into all sorts of awkward shapes hyping things up all the time - as well as being able to sleep peacefully at night - is that it gives space and clarity. Acknowledge when things are great. And also when they're not. As a skier visiting other areas, that's what I'd always want.
