The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Yesterday the clouds cleared up during the day leaving us with some fine weather in the afternoon. It's keeping cold but the sun is out this morning. Another calm before the storm kind of days as snow is due by tomorrow morning and at times it might get pretty wild once again. Hopefully not too much in terms of wind. For now though, it's a lovely morning and the snow is in great shape. I cant recall if I mentioned this before, but over the green season the quad lift at Hoppo Bunadaira was replaced by a gondola lift. This new gondola at Bunadaira is cunningly called the Bundadaira Gondola! After all the snow (that eased off during the day yesterday) there are much clearer skies this morning. It's good and cold and the snow should be in top condition. No fresh snow being reported from the ski area apart from 4cm at Uenotaira. (Kind of seems a bit odd, but that's what the numbers say as I check them this morning). The snow I am reporting all came yesterday. A few more courses are now open, so there's only a handful that remain unavailable. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here This morning I have another 13cm of fresh snowfall to add to my reports. And once again, it's 13cm of top quality snow. And once again, forecasts show consistent incoming snow. (I hope that isn't getting boring!) For the moment, it's quite a bright early morning. There's even blue sky over towards Mt Yotei, which itself is shrouded in cloud. I need to get my report up early today, so that's it for today and see you tomorrow. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -9℃, heavy snowfall (15cm) around dawn. Moiwa800m: -12℃, NW8m/s, cornices developing, 20cm snowfall. Annupuri1100m: -13℃, W8m/s, cornices and snowdrifts developing, 20cm snowfall since before dawn. Coasatal data Benkei cape: NNW14m/s, Kamui cape: NNW12m/s, 1014hPa, 1.9m waves. A strong cold airmass is flowing in. The isobars have tightened and a strong snowfall started pre-dawn, making cornices and snowdrifts grow. Cornices are likely to largely fall, however looking at the snowfall transition, the avalanche hazard has been evaluated relatively low. Caution is always required when riding in steep open slopes and/or under cornices. Gate 8 and 11 are scheduled to open today. The light is weak and the slopes undulations are difficult to see even in the treeruns. Please be careful. Annupuri and Hirafu peak chairs are also scheduled to start tomorrow. The 24th annual Avalanche Meeting will be held from 6pm at the Niseko Chomin Center and Mr. Yuji Ishikawa, Chairman of the Hokkaido Mountaineering Association will come as guest. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . Yesterday's slopes were dreamy and set to continue today with another fresh dump last night with snow continuing to fall. It should lighten off during the day with tomorrow bringing clear spells (and the back to snow for the count down). Horrible fog at the moment though. People are beginning to drift in for the New Year. The Omori slopes are now open and, being slightly lower, may escape the worst current fog line. Lower Uwanodai has quite a few schools running as well as scattered about but the mountain absorbs numbers well and you wouldn't notice. The wind us up a bit more than yesterday. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Tons of fresh snowfall! This morning the ski area is reporting 50cm on Yamabiko, 32cm on Uenotaira, 40cm on Hikage and 20cm at Karasawa. That's from 3pm yesterday. Then there is the amount they were reporting yesterday during the day too, giving us a total of 77cm fresh at Yamabiko. Let's forget the numbers for a moment. You know, times like this are the kind of time when the superlatives can truly be brought out of the bag and used with confidence, and not as a hype-building convenience. (I always tire when I hear them used when conditions are simply average). With the snowfall over the last few days conditions are now truly deep up there. Some might even mutter those silly comments like there's too much. Obviously, that's a ridiculous comment and Naski will be having none of that. However much snow we have, we always want more! Skyline course is now indeed open and there's only a handful of areas of Nozawa that are not yet accessible - mostly the few courses off Skyline itself. Tomorrow we might get some sunshine and the snow should have eased off, so it should be a top day. Then there's more heavy snow on the forecast for the last two days of 2021. The ski area this morning on their official site is reporting a whopping 100cm of new snow on the upper areas of the mountain. Down here it's just a piffling 60cm. ;) The taps are turned to on. I'm finding the new look to their official information somewhat difficult to interpret (and that's not a Japanese language problem; rather the info is unclear). I am not able to get out these last few days (unfortunately) but it seems like the tree run courses are not open. Perhaps they're just dealing with all this snow... The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . This morning Cortina is reporting 40cm of fresh snow; 47/Goryu 10cm at base and 30cm up top; and Happo reporting up to 40cm at Usagidaira. Tsugake reporting 25cm. I can report 15cm at base. Some of you might have been seeing the news about lots of heavy snowfall in Japan. Not massive numbers here, but at the same time I am happy to see lots of areas of Japan getting their snow (though unlike Hakuba, some places would prefer that it did not snow!) Wind is affecting operations at Happo-one early morning today and the gondola is not up and running yet; also the top lifts at Goryu/47 are affected. Though it doesn't feel particularly windy down at base areas. It's quite bright this morning and even a bit of blue sky to see - it might even clear up more and be sunny later on. With the fresh snow on the mountains conditions should be really good.
