For many people today marks a return to work, so there will be less people around. The New Year felt almost normal with quite a lot of people around. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . It continues this morning and is likely to do so all day levelling off tomorrow morning. Cloud cover is down and winds are likely to pick up later on so make the most of the tops in the morning (with wind chill it is also going to be cold up there). As a reminder, night skiing is currently on at both Uwanodai and Yokokura daily and there are people braving the night chill. Those slopes, however, will not get groomed until early in the morning so they are rather chopped up at the end of the day. Looking forward to bit more sunshine tomorrow. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Excellent morning to you from Hakuba. So, there's two types of morning that I really love. There's those with the deep blue sky and stunning mountains (preferably following overnight snow). But even better than those are the mornings with a lot of fresh snowfall. And today is one of those. We did get some blue sky and sun at times yesterday afternoon. It was snowing by the evening and this morning we have some big numbers to report. For once Cortina does not 'win', reporting just 20cm. In contrast Happo-one is reporting up to 37cm and Hakuba 47 are boasting of 'over 50cm' on their upper areas. Hakuba Goryu, next door, are reporting 40cm. And I can post 32cm for my base snowfall report. Excellent. It is always exciting to be able to report good numbers. It's even more exciting to get out there and play in it. :) (And of course I totally don't say that to tease those of you who are sadly not able to be here right now. A thin layer of snow on the ground this morning (I'm sure we were expecting more), but the ski area is reporting a total of 20cm since yesterday on the top Yamabiko area (5cm of that since early morning yesterday). It turned out to be a fairly mild afternoon and nice to see some sun too. This morning light snow is falling and we are due snow through the day into tomorrow. Going to be interesting to see how the day develops. Since I got up visibility has become worse and the snow has gotten stronger... The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. I have just been out to measure 13cm of snow to add to my report this morning. I thought it was going to be more than that, but wind probably is a factor in that. Looks like the ski areas themselves are reporting 10-20cm. Well, yesterday was a bit of a wild ride (not that I ventured outside much), and thankfully today looks like it should be calmer. It is still snowing - light at the moment but rather heavier just a short while back) and visibility is much improved and it looks like more lifts will be operating. But as of 8:30am, the top lifts and the gondola at Annupuri are on hold because of remaining windy conditions. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -10℃, 15cm snowfall, occasional gusts and low visibility. Moiwa 800m: -13℃, W10m/s, 20cm snowfall, cornices growing and snowdrifts are heavy. Annupuri 1100m: -15℃, 20cm new snow on course and cornices/snowdrifts developments. Hirafu ridge: -20℃, stormy and wind from all directions, no visibility. Coastal data Benkei cape: NW16m/s, Kamui cape: NW13m/s, 1010hPa, 2.1m waves. A strong storm is persisting above 900m elevation, making snowdrifts and cornices heavily develop. Evaluating on-site observations, snowfall transition and all weather data, there is a risk of large-scale surface slab avalanche from Jan 2nd low-pressure snowfall layer. Better not ride the middle-ridge of O-sawa (Annuouri bowl) even if gate 8 opens. That spot is the site of Japan’s first snowboard deadly avalanche accident and the weather conditions back then was similar to the current conditions. The wind is calming down but still blowing strong up high. Strong wind creates unstable snow-slabs in leeward slopes and avalanches occur when those slabs break apart. The slabs stabilize as the wind dies down, but caution is still required for today. Beware of frostbites and hypothermia. Have you switched your beacon on? The snow in the trees is good, but stay away from the bottom of steep slopes and gully bottoms. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . We gained a bit more snow but most of it yesterday. Tonight should see another good fall. It started off sunny today and, as a result, the tour buses poured in and by 10am there was an hour long queue at the Zao Ropeway to see the juhyo (snowy tree forest/snow monsters). It is now cloudy but without the fog. Other parts of the resort are moving well. It has been a very busy few days, certainly different from last year which tallies with reports on the rest of the country. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . The strong winds overnight have eased off and are now light to moderate in the ski village. There is 21cm of new snow around base level with quite a bit of body to it, so this will definitely help build up the base and cover some of the thinner patches on the Kitanomine side. Snow is falling moderately and is forecast to continue through the day. The resort has advised regular lift operations and times may change today due to wind and snow. Those clouds did start to deliver some fresh snow though and this morning there's generally 15-20cm or so being reported by the ski areas on the mountain. There's a decent layer on the ground around base areas too. So a decent refresh and snow due tonight through tomorrow too. Sounds good.
