It is currently snowing moderately and this is forecast to continue through the day. The temperature is warm at -3c and will go up as high as -1c. Due to this warmth the snow has a lot more body and moisture to it than we would usually expect. There is plenty of potential for fresh tracks today! On big snow days like this it is possible that some lift operations may be delayed. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . The good news is that we have fresh snow. Ski areas are reporting 30-50cm (Goryu winning the biggest number prize) across the mountains. Nice. Problem is that it's windy, so you can't get up to lots of that lovely snow. Right now just base lifts at Happo-one are open and top lifts at 47/Goryu, Iwatake and Tsugaike are also on hold. The forecasts show more snow across today, tomorrow and Friday. It would seem that the heaviest snow is due later in the day tomorrow, so we're going to be getting lots of snow. Would be good if the wind eased off and let the lifts move... ----- In recent days there have been a few cases of ski areas announcing members of staff testing positive for you-know-what. It doesn't seem to have been affecting operations. I'll quickly gloss over the rain from yesterday as we have fresh snow this morning and a lot more due over the next two days. (Phew). It's snowing now and windy too on the mountain. At 8:30am the following lifts are on hold: Nagasaka gondola, Yamabiko quads, Skyline, Uenotaira and Paradise quads.. so basically the top area of the mountain. Obviously, runs coming off those lifts are not available. The Hikage gondola should get going but hasn't just yet. Going to depend on conditions. Lower lifts appear to be opening as planned. The peak of the snowfall is due tomorrow. Expect impressive numbers. There's currently some clear and sunny weather forecast for the weekend. That should be great! Right now it is actually fairly bright but we are expecting a day of snow and wind. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Well, it's not actually the nicest of mornings. (But don't worry... it's not rain!) This morning is not quite as cold as it has been though, and you can kind of tell with the quality of the 18cm of snow I have just measured. It is heavier than the delightful light and fluffy snow we often get here. I'm interested to see the larger numbers being reported by the report below too. Wind has definitely been a factor. Whatever, a decent amount of snow and it is still incoming. After a day of lift disruptions yesterday, it seems inevitable that today will also see a bunch of lifts not being able to get going. At 8:30am, top lifts are on hold, as is the Niseko Gondola (at Niseko Village) and Hanazono seem to be on standby (though I can see the gondola moving on the webcam). I was just outside and it didn't feel too windy to me, but a day of snow and wind is forecast (especially this afternoon) and at least the snow will probably spill over into tomorrow and possibly even the day after. OK, time for some toast. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -1℃, 40cm snowfall, wet snow. Moiwa 800m: -5℃, 50cm snowfall, snowdrifts development. Annupuri 1150m: -7℃, Westerly wind 5-15m/s, 50cm snowfall, snowdrifts at the deepest point 120cm, Hirafu peak ridge: -7℃, wind is not too strong but the visibility is low. SSE15m/s. Coastal data Benkei cape: WNW16m/s, Kamui cape: SW14m/s, 987hPa, 1.1m waves. Snow in town starts to thaw as the mixed snow and rain falls. 30-40cm wet low pressure snowfall at 300m elevation. 40-50cm dry low pressure snowfall at 600m elevation with the temperature below freezing. Snowdrifts are developing above 700m elevation with south east wind. Wind is light due to the low pressure system over the western Japan Sea, but westerly winds will pick up after 9 am. Snowfall above 700m elevation is extremely small low pressure crystals. As unstable slabs continue to develop, it is likely to slide at knolls and steep slopes. There is a large amount of heavy snow in the treeruns under 800m elevation, which is interesting to ski. Beware of the cracks around 700m elevation, they are hidden by the new snow. Avalanche risk will drastically increase as the northwest wind and snow pick up after 10 am. Beware of snow transition. It’s better to stay on the groomers today. Do not stay in the gully bottom. Roads are also treacherous today, please drive carefully. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Just a bit of a dusting to report today, from yesterday. It feels fairly cold early on but today is due to be relatively mild but then things are about to quickly change again. A storm is coming. It's due to start up from sometime this afternoon and maybe continue in some form through Friday. I imagine this is going to be one of those periods when we get a really decent amount of snow each day. We are going to have to look out for wind too, though, and maybe even this afternoon. Actually, as lifts start for the morning at 8:30am, I can see that the top lifts at Hirafu, Village and Annupuri are all on hold. So it looks like it might have started up there already... Let's see what Nature has in store for us! ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -5℃, 1cm new snow, calm. Moiwa800m: -7℃, calm, 1cm snow, no new snowdrifts. Annupuri1150m: -7℃, calm, light dusting, southerly wind picking up. Hirafu peak ridge: -9℃, thin new snow, SSE15m/s. Coastal data Benkei cape: S8m/s, Kamui cape: E3m/s, 1013hPa, 0.6m waves. A southerly wind is forecasted to pick up before noon and the weather will deteriorate. The overall avalanche risk is low in the morning, but will drastically change as the snowfall and wind pick up and new snow-slabs start to form. A relatively large-scale glide avalanche occurred in the Mikaeri bowl area yesterday. The most probable cause for it is the depth-hoar near the ground formed due to small snowfall, cold and sun factors during early winter. Cracks forming at this time of the season usually don’t end up into a glide avalanche, however it seems a little different this season. It is highly recommended to stay away from cracked slopes in all elevations as large avalanches sliding from frozen sasa-bamboo or ground level is expected. All areas outside the gates are not controlled or managed by the resorts. It is surely an attractive terrain, however it is also true that there are many hazards out there. Always be prudent and never underestimate the risks. Avalanches are natural phenomenon but only become an accident when a person is caught in one. Gates opening is undecided. Please follow the ski patrol’s instructions. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Another mild day today; there's a fog advisory out there but visibility is pretty good up to the hill (the ski area itself is obscured). Should get clearer through the day, though. Probably one more mild day and then the snow turns on again on the 12th. We're already over two meters of snowpack in most places, so another big fall would be a nice addition! Get that base set up for spring. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here So, yes, it's still snowing. Very lightly at the moment, but I have measured another 16cm to since yesterday morning to add to this report. We are enjoying some real consistency! Today is another day when I am tempted to say that we probably won't get much in terms of cm, but forecasts show larger numbers looming across mid week. That Niseko consistency looks set to continue. A bit of a relatively mild bump with temps threatening to rise slightly above zero might need to be negotiated tomorrow. There is not much of a wind this morning and all of the lifts that are playing this season should be up and moving as normal. Last day of the long weekend today, which usually means some the people will be starting to make their way back home making for a quieter afternoon in particular. Not that huge crowds are a problem this year. ----- This is just an observation, but Niseko Village don't seem to refresh their new snowfall numbers on some mornings. That's why when there has definitely been snowfall, sometimes it is shown as 0cm in the below list. I do check official info. If they say 0cm, that's what goes in there. Just thought I'd point that out in case you thought I was just missing something... ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -5℃, calm, 15cm new snow. Moiwa800m: -7℃, calm, 20cm new snow. Annupuri1150m: -10℃, calm, 15cm snow. Hirafu ridge: -11℃, SW breeze. Coastal data Benkei cape: WSW5m/s, Kamui cape: WSW4m.s, 1020hPa, 0.8m waves. Wind data available on separate site. The ocean and mountain weather is calm under a high pressure system. 10-20cm light crystal snow has fallen overnight. Snowdrift development is very small. The overall avalanche risk is low today. Cracks are starting to open in SW facing slopes below 900m elevation. These cracks are the result of the snowpack releasing its tension. 200cm deep and not easy to see from above. If you fall head-first you may not be able to come out, please be cautious. Glide avalanches could happen, even in mid-winter, in steep open slopes, cliffs and sasa-bamboo covered slopes. It is highly recommended to stay away from large steep slopes/cliffs. Amazing snow conditions on and off-piste, all gates are scheduled to open today. Listen to the ski patrol’s instructions before stepping out of the gates. Airbags won’t open if not activated. Beware of sudden weather changes. Lower down is a bit better as not as much snow or traffic. Viz is poor but not pea soup. Lower half is fine. Should brighten later in the afternoon like yesterday. Suggest lower slopes today.
