  • Myoko Now: Tuesday 1st February 2022

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 1040cm Posted on Tuesday 1st February 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Just a little coloring of snow overnight (by locals standards; it still was 5cm of nice light flakes). Pretty cold last night, too, as I found while I struggled with recalcitrant snow removal equipment. It's sunny and nice now, though, although snow is blowing in over the mountain and falling lightly in the sunlight. Pretty nice morning! The Niigata news says snow likely again this afternoon, although looking at our weather/wind animated map, there's a front to the west over the Sea of Japan that looks like it might divert the wind, and the snow, away from this area today. Winds coming right back at us from Siberia from tomorrow, though, so one way or another snow is coming. The skiing is great; the battle for locals continue (the driveway at my house has five-meter walls now....) The latest Zao Now report can be found here . Morning from Zao. The sun is appearing earlier than anticipated although it will be an in/out day. There is wind about which may get stronger during the day but nothing lift stopping. The very light snow at present may pick up a bit but moderately. In the meantime, the modest snow last night is still welcome as there were compact patches appearing on the more popular slopes yesterday e.g. Hyakumanin. It appears to be a popular weekend with most people being on the far right side as you look at the mountain. Probably also wanting to go to the very top, however, the snow monsters are very low this year and can be seen even on the Utopia lift. There was a winding queue for the second stage ropeway to the top by mid-morning so be aware of that. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The snow never completely stopped yesterday, with very very very light snow continuing to fall during the day. Just enough to soften up footsteps and keep things nice and white. It started up again in earnest last night, so we have about 30cm on the ground so far (when I listen to radio reports from around the world, I realize how bizarre that really is; oh, the usual foot of snow in Myoko means panic and traffic closures is so many other places). A little bit of north wind with this snow, too; there's a little cornice hanging off the snow walls that now mark the entry to my house. We're pretty open to the north, though, so I don't think there will be enough wind to close lifts. Could be a little brisk on some of the lifts that likewise are open to the north, such as at Akakura Onsen. Hey, but you really feel alive when you get off a lift like that, right?
