The ski area reports 12-20cm overnight on top of 12-15cm up top during the day yesterday and a few cm down at base. If my sums are correct, that gives us 30+cm on the top areas since this time yesterday, so that sounds good. It doesn't feel particularly cold this morning but it should be snowing through the day and tomorrow too. Yes, that please. After a day closed due to wind yesterday, the ski area is open again this morning and there's a fair few people waiting for the gondola. The Paradise quad is up and running too this morning. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Snow continued to fall on and off through the day yesterday, but we didn't get a massive amount of new snow. The trees are all covered with snow on their north sides, reflecting the pretty good winds we had in the evening. The winds tapered off just in time for Christmas Eve fireworks at Akakura Kanko last night, and it was a pretty fun event. A really long fireworks display and free local sake, Niigata-exclusive beer and lots of snacks. Nice way to kick off the opening of a lot more lifts today. We can use more, of course, but snow is forecast for the coming days so the conditions will just keep on getting better. Several resorts are opening today, but as I complained about yesterday, it can be kind of tricky to tell exactly which lifts and runs will be open. I'd like to get these reports out to you before 8am, but, at least in the early season when things are just beginning to get going, that can be difficult. Oh, well, the main thing is that there's more snow today than yesterday, more is coming, and all the resorts are open. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Ho ho ho! Seasons greetings from Hakuba. This morning ski areas are reporting 10-15cm of fresh snowfall on their slopes to add to all the goodies we already have. Snow and wind during the day yesterday. It was really blowing it around at Hakuba 47 when I was there for a short while. Great to see some familiar faces from overseas, too, including a few friends here visiting. The weather might not have been the most friendly, but some fine snow to enjoy. It's cloudy now with light snow falling but quite bright in places. Wind is still an issue this morning and affecting lifts at Happo-one where only lower areas are open. The top section of the Tsugaike gondola is also on hold. Goryu/47 appear to be open as planned. Light snow is forecast, with perhaps some heavier snow tonight. Beyond that, the snow might ease off for a few days, and we might get to enjoy some sunshine. I am tentatively adding the reported new snowfall numbers to the list below. That list is, of course, checked and updated with each report. Hopefully, it will work out, and ski areas will be consistent with their reporting. I've put the number in red so that it stands out. Remember, I am only reporting what I find that is reported by the official websites (and official social media) of ski areas each morning. And some don't consistently post any new snowfall numbers. I will also certainly mention those snowfall numbers in the text of my reports here at the top... especially when they are Hakubatastic! The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It is snowing this Christmas Eve morning, but it hasn't got back to being as cold as we might have hoped, and there has been some more rain too. So as you might expect, the quality of the snow isn't back to being top-notch. (The Avalanche Report shows more snowfall than I have seen with my own eyes, so hopefully, there's a thicker layer out there on the ski runs). It's also windy, and that wind is affecting a bunch of lifts at the start of the day. At 8:30am only lower lifts are opening, and none at Hanazono. That may change, depending on how the weather might change this morning. We are expecting continued snowfall into early week and it remains to be seen just how pesky the wind will be... --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: +3℃, 15cm wet snow over last 12hrs. Moiwa 800m: -3℃, 20cm snowfall, poor visibility, blizzard conditions, snowdrift development. Annupuri 1000m: -4℃, 30cm snowfall, 1.5m snowdrift development, snow wind continues, poor visibility. A low pressure is bringing stormy conditions to the seas and mountains. Due to multiple low pressure zones, the wind will temporarily calm this morning, but after noon the NE snow wind will intensify and snowdrift development will rapidly increase. The snow below 800m is reset and conditions are not too bad. Be careful riding though, the snow is heavy, due to the winds and wet snow. Many accidents occur during snowstorms. Stay off open steep slopes open above the forest treeline until the weather improves. Take it easy and make a smart plan based on the weather. Conditions will get better. From observation and data evaluation, the avalanche risk is very high at all elevations and on all aspects. Do not go into the valley bottoms. Watch out for snow sliding off roofs. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . Did it snow yesterday afternoon - blizzard and winds (and after I'd cleared around the house!). Snow continued overnight. As a result, the slopes are wonderfully powdery. Check-out the black at the Chou which is thigh deep - bliss! Most of the lifts are open now although quite a few are yet to open as they clear the snow. It is supposed to get very windy but not yet, however it is beginning. Viz is a bit poor especially at the Chuo but not that bad. Although temps are supposed to be around -8, it does not feel cold. Those here tomorrow will certainly have a white Christmas. A modest amount of snow overnight - dare I say not as much as we expected, again - but it's due to continue over the next few days, so let's look forward to the prospect of it building up quickly. The ski area is reporting winds of over 20m/s this morning on the top area, so the gondolas are both not opening as planned. This means that, effectively, the ski area is closed at the moment. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . We have some serious snowfall going on this morning. The wind really picked up late last night as the first flakes began to fall; it was pretty windy at moments about 30 minutes ago but it's calmed down as the snow starts to fall more heavily. And as I write this, we're suddenly seeing some almost cyclical, heavy winds coming from all directions. Strong enough that there might be lift closures, especially Akakan's gondola. I'm going to whine about the ski area reporting today, because it's a lot harder this year to sort through the websites to find what we really need to know - how much snow, what's the temperature, and, most importantly, which lifts and runs are open. The list of shame: Akakura Onsen, which has twice delayed opening (and that's OK), but gave us a lengthy weather report but no notes on when, which lifts, etc. Seki Onsen, which is never easy to understand (lots of unrelated, outdated information and a tiny text note of "Open!"). Alpen Blick/Ikenotaira, which used to have an easy-to-understand listing of lifts, snow, runs, temps, but now makes you dig through the more "resort-oriented" website, to then download a pdf with the daily report (OK, I need to change my browser so it opens pdfs onscreen, but you get my meaning). And the link is dead anyway. Lotte Arai is getting better about noting which lifts will be open later on (9am is too late, right?), but that is really an early-season issue. End of my rant, people! The positive: it's really exciting to see real, vision-obscuring, continuous snowfall. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . It's Christmas weekend and Hakuba is doing great! Here's how much fresh snow is being reported by ski areas early this morning: - Hakuba Happo-one: 15cm (Kurobishi); 23cm (Usagidaira); 30cm (Nakiyama) - Hakuba Goryu: 30cm - Hakuba 47: 20-30cm - Hakuba Cortina: 40cm (top); 30cm (base) - Hakuba Iwatake: 10cm Some varied numbers there, but you get a good idea. My own observation is 29cm. There's more and less in places. (A good 'problem' to have). The tree branches are looking strained under the weight of snow, and the snow making machines are looking a bit embarrassed at us not needing them right now. I'm sure they are happy for us. :) The only downer really is that some upper lifts are not moving this morning due to strong winds. As things get close to being fully open, I am in the process of cleaning up the individual ski area listings in the report, below. I think we are at the stage now where I don't need to mention individual lifts that are moving. From here on, it's more a case of what is not open. It might take a few more days for the final form to take shape! The snow should be continuing through tomorrow at least. As I write this, it is snowing lightly. It feels a bit windy, but not too much and not enough to affect lifts. It is just cloudy at the moment but we should be getting more snow through tomorrow, then perhaps a few days when we might even get to see some sun. Have a good Saturday.
