I thought that today would be a continuation of yesterday's sunny spells but it now seems that it will continue to be overcast. The scattered wind should lessen as the day progresses. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . We've had some more snow and more of the ski area is opening up. There was the update I made yesterday, and there's more going on today with a bunch of ski runs opening from this afternoon - including Schneider, Challenge, Challenge 39, Utopia and Rinkan. That will mean that from this afternoon you should be able to ski or snowboard back down to base (rather than take a gondola). There has been 30cm or more of fresh snow on upper areas of the ski areas since yesterday. The tree branches are looking loaded this morning. (Not so much down in lower areas, more like 5-10cm). Anyway it should be good out there this morning. We might get some clearer skies too. Next snowfall of significance looks due around Thursday/Friday. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It is still curiously not as cold as we expect it to be. I believe it is raining in places not too far away from us, just a bit lower down in town, and we can do well to avoid that. (That Hirafu webcam image below looks... kind of wet, doesn't it?) But anyway, it has been snowing lightly outside my place as I write this, and there is snow to report since yesterday morning. It has been on and off with the most yesterday morning and late last night. My measurement is 15cm. Seems like there might have been more on the north side of the mountain. Various forecasts seem to indicate a return to colder conditions from around later Wednesday and still a chance of some clearer skies at times before then. I'm guessing conditions might be a bit heavy before then. --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: +1℃, 15cm wet snowfall in 12h. Moiwa 800m: -2℃, westerly 8m/s, 25cm snowfall in 12h with snowdrifts. Annupuri 1000m: -3℃, westerly 10m/s, bad visibility, 30cm snowfall with snowdrifts. Coastal data: Benkei cape NE11m/s, Kamui cape ENE5m/s, 1007 hPa, 3.5m waves. Warm air snowfall continues with rain below 300m elevation. The freezing level lies around 700m and wet new snow accumulated with snowdrift development above 800m. Niseko Village Gate11, Moiwa Gate 6 will open today. Follow the ski patrol’s instructions when stepping out of bounds. Snowpack is still low along the creek line, but is in pretty good shape. Carefully pick your route. It is highly recommended to wear a helmet and an avalanche beacon. The new snowdrifts formed by the past few days’ NE wind above 1100m are still unstable. Make sure to anchor yourself with a rope when conducting pit-checks and rutschblock test. The avalanche risk remains very high at the Backbowl’s high sidewalls. Refrain from accessing from Goshiki side. Avalanches occur when the conditions align and does not depend on the amount of snowfall. They are natural phenomena and won’t be an accident as long as nobody is in its path. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . After so many days it feels strange to have no snow falling. Light falls may come during the day but nothing meaningful. It is foggy on the mountain with variable visibility higher up, however, below the mountain are blue skies. It should, therefore, clear up a bit with a good potential for sunny patches. We'll see. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good news this morning. Nozawa-like snowfall since yesterday with the ski area, most of it coming overnight (5cm during the day yesterday). It's just great to see the ski area reporting 40-55cm of fresh snow on its slopes. I myself have measured 34cm. Visibility is certainly limited this morning but the snow should be worth it. Great. Let this be the start of lots more of the same. Ski area operations appear to be unchanged this morning, but I expect more to be opening up soon - especially if we get more snow during the day today as forecast. There may be some clearer skies tomorrow and the day after, particularly Wednesday. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . It is a cold morning and still quite windy on the mountains. (Happo-one always seems to be affected most by the wind and indeed this morning their top lifts are on hold again while other ski areas appear to be opening as planned). Cortina is reporting the most snow this morning with up to 40cm on upper areas since yesterday. Nice. There's more modest snowfall numbers coming in from other ski areas to the south of that most northerly ski area of the region. Numbers in the list below. Light snow was falling earlier on this morning but that has eased off now. I can even see some blue sky peeping through some clouds. We might get to see some sun over the next few days. It is windy and it has been blowing the snow around making it difficult to know what has exactly fallen. Cloud and light snow forecast for today but it will remain windy. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Merry Christmas! Some more snow for Christmas morning. Just under 10cm of it here at base though it sounds like there is more higher up. It is a little colder, but it still feels relatively mild at the moment. It feels less windy too, though wind may still be an issue. At the start of the day, lifts seem to be opening as planned. I hear the (G11) Mizu no sawa area is opening from today at Niseko Village. A few more lifts are working this morning too, including the Jumbo Number 3 pair at Annupuri and the Ace Number 3 and Swinging Monkey at Hirafu. The Super and Furiko courses at Hirafu will be closed today (or 'from today') due to a 'confirmed avalanche hazard'. The ski area is saying that those areas are dangerous and should not be entered. We have a special guest in Niseko today. Santa will be shredding the Niseko slopes today, no doubt in the most gnarliest of fashion. In previous years, I have seen him both skiing and snowboarding, and often he takes time to give out chocolates to kids... both young and old ones! I'm not sure of the timing, but I think he checks out each of the ski areas during the day. Clearly, he can't be in more than one place at any one time!! Anyway, enough silliness. A NE wind and wet snow on the mountain. Above 800m significant continued snowdrift development from the easterly wind. From data, tests and observation the avalanche risk is high on cornice and snowdrift slopes above 800m. Although avalanches wont run very far, the debris will be heavy, hard and very difficult to extract you from. Beacons, shovels and probes are highly recommended. There was an avalanche with 1m facture face on Hirafu Super Course yesterday. Please be careful today. Below the 800m tree line, the forests have caught piles of wet wind effected snow. Watch for falling branches. Conditions will improve after the storm passes. So while it's not a huge amount, we'll take it and there is more on the way. The new snow lets more open up this morning too with the official snow depth at Madarao up to 55cm. Feels like we are getting started, at last, even though clearly we would like lots more snow. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . A very Merry Christmas from Zao Onsen. Snowing again but light and those annoying pin pricks if your face is uncovered. Wind comes and goes but is likely to pick up later on. Viz-wise, the Chuo is ok, but upper Uwanodai is murky with that disconcerting feeling of lack of gravity when you can't quite see the ground. A shame as some great powder there. Much higher up and across to Hyakuman is likel to be be denser fog. Some lifts again are slow in opening e.g. the Mikaeri from Diamon to Chuo and the Katagai triple from Paradise to Chuo. Have fun and work up that appetite for those who celebrate.
