The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Cloud with light snow at times/in places this morning, though I don't think we are expecting much snow today. My report is a bit later today on purpose. In recent days, the ski area seems to have posted a snowfall number early morning and then changing it after 8am (and after my report). Perhaps taking into account snow in that hour? Or a modified reading? Not sure. So I am keeping an eye on that and trying to work out what is happening. Obviously, I want the information posted on this report to be correct. Perhaps my report should be made after 8am every day, rather than before as I had been doing on some days recently. The obvious huge benefit of a post-8am report is that Naski can be seen on the Hikage webcam image. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here There are some lovely big flakes of snow falling outside my window as I write this. Less so on the Hanazono webcam. It remains cold and a north westerly wind remains, though all lifts apart from Annupuri Gondola are starting the day as planned. I heard someone yesterday say they wish it would stop snowing. Now that's just silly, isn't it?! I don't think we should ever moan about snow falling from the skies, it is too precious. Though I can certainly understand the wish to see the sun from time to time. They will probably get their wish in the coming days. It would be nice for everyone is we got periods of sunshine and beautiful views, just as long as it remains cold. --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base -6C, mild wind, good visibility, 10cm snowfall. Moiwa800m: -9.1C, WSW8.3m/s, cornice development, snowdrifts are stable. Annupur1100m: -12.4C, WNW7.5m/s, cornice development, snowdrifts are unstable. Mizuno no Sawa top: -10.9C, NNW5.6m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -12.2C, 20cm, snowdrift development on peak ridge. Coastal data: Benkei cape NW16m/s, Kamui cape WNW11m/s, 1015hPa, 2.3m waves. Snowdrifts development on the slopes over 1000m elevation due to the continuous snowfall. From observations and tests, snowdrift consolidation is slowly developing, avalanche risk is decreasing on the leeward slopes at 900m elevation. Gates 2, 3,4, and 5 are due to be open tomorrow. Avalanche risk remains high on the backbowl, Annupuri bowl cornice slopes, and East ridge cornice slopes. Even if the summit gates are open, do not ride these areas without utmost caution, always ride one by one, do not traverse 40-degree slopes, these can trigger an avalanche. Always know there are people in the valley. If an avalanche occurs on the upper slope, the people riding below it will get caught in one. This is a ski resort and many people are riding out of bounds for fresh snow. Please always be considerate of others. Do not duck ropes and do not enter strictly off-limits areas such as Yu no Sawa and Haru no Taki. Slabs are easily formed on these southern faced slopes by solar radiation, serious large scale avalanche risk remains due to the snowfall transition this winter. The Hell's Gate below Moiwa Bowl is currently extremely dangerous. If you fall into the valley, you will not only get wet but also suffer serious damage from rocks and stumps. It is best to avoid this area until there is more snow. Is your beacon switched on? There is no safety in the winter mountains, but most accidents can be prevented if you are careful. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . We did get sunny patches yesterday albeit lower down. Expect same or more today in the afternoon once the snow stops falling. Long range visibility continues to be low and winds are high in pockets around Chuo and across to the top of Kurohime and above. Yesterday the Kurohime quad stopped late morning (maybe because of wind and ice clearance on the runners). Sadder was the closure midday onwards of the main Zao Ropeway for mechanical inspection. Tourists for the snow monsters were reportedly stranded at the first station top but I believe may have been brought down by the snow cat used for the night light-up tour. With the wind, check the lift situation where you're going shown at the main lifts and do not ignore roped-off slopes otherwise you'll be facing a long walk. It is very cold (before wind chill) so go prepared. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . A cloudy kind of start to the day here with another layer of fresh since yesterday. Kumanoyu is reporting 10cm of fresh snowfall. Light snow still falling in some areas but that will probably be stopping soon. We are expecting some sun over the next few days and it won't be quite as cold as it has been. It shouldn't be warming up too much though and keeping suitably cold. Some forecasts show more snow incoming on Saturday night into Sunday. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . We have received another decent amount of lovely snow since my last report. I was not able to check the snowfall numbers that the ski area reported yesterday afternoon, sorry. So the numbers in the list below are the overnight numbers (since 3pm yesterday afternoon) and do not include snow that fell during the daytime. My numbers are, as always, since last report. It has been a very good 3-4 days. The snow should be easing off today and then we are due a few days of potentially clearer skies at times too. Let us hope it keeps cold. The ski area is making a point of saying that entry into restricted areas is strictly prohibited. I don't know if there has been any specific incidents to prompt that. Right now, there is plenty of fine snow within the ski area boundaries, more than enough for everyone I'm sure. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It is another very cold and snowy morning, and I have another 20cm or so of fresh snow to report since yesterday. Niseko Village are reporting a temperature of -17C again this morning, it's more like -10C at base. Snowfall might be getting less over the coming days and there might even be some sun. We haven't seen much of that since the season started a month ago. Temperatures look set to remain low, so conditions should be remain excellent. I need to post earlier than usual today and so don't have any specific lift news. Hopefully they will be able to open as planned. See you tomorrow. --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base -11C, 20cm snowfall, moderate visibility. Moiwa800m: -13C, W11.6m/s, windy snowfall, bad visibility, snowdrifts development. Annupur1100m: -16.1C, WNW10.1m/s, snowing, bad visibility, large snowdrifts difficult to groom. Mizuno no Sawa top: -14.8C, NNW5.2m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -13.8C, NNE1.4m/s. Coastal data: Benkei cape NNW15m/s, Kamui cape NW6m/s, 1012hPa, 2.6m waves. The winter pressure distribution has weakened and the weather is ameliorating. The snowdrifts kept developing until pre-dawn but slowed down after 6am. The avalanche risk in slopes under 900m elevation is lowering, however higher elevation slopes are still very unstable and the avalanche risk remains high. Stay away from the gully bottom, avalanche strikes from above you. All gates opening are yet to be determined. Please follow the ski patrol’s instructions. Peak gates should open after the 6th Jan. Please be patient and do not cross ropes. The Niseko Rules respect the freedom to ride out of bounds, however is also concerned about the safety of all resort users. This is a ski resort and everybody using the resort’s facility must abide by the rules. Someone that didn’t follow the rules, crossed the rope, went out of bounds and got lost yesterday. He eventually got rescued, but overconfidence could kill you. It is best to leave the Backbowl, Annupuri bowl cornice slopes, Mikaeri bowl steep slopes and East ridge cornice slopes untouched for today, even if the weather gets better. Stay away from strictly off-limits areas such as Haru no Taki. Japan Meteorology Center says heavy loads of snow are inherently dangerous. We base our risk evaluation on the amount of snowfall as well as how the snowfall transitioned each day. The slopes have been mostly reset again. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . Well we didn't quite get the hoped for sunny patches yesterday but hope that it improves today. It is snowing lightly which should be at least the case most of the day but unlikely to produce anything of note. The sign is a bright orb behind the cloud cover but there is fog on the mountain. Viz is therefore variable as is wind. It feels jolly cold today so be prepared. Numbers will have reduced so enjoy. The temperatures stayed pretty consistent; my little unit says it stayed between -2 and -4°C throughout the night and into the morning. Going out to explore the woods this morning, so I want to give an early report, but, again, the resorts haven't updated, and it's right at 8am!
