We're down to just two resorts open on weekdays (Akakan and Lotte Arai), with Seki Onsen opening again on the weekend, and (maybe) part of Akakura Onsen. It's been an unusual season in many ways. We did see the return of international tourism, not to pre-covid levels yet, but there a lot of people did come and visit, despite pretty high airfare and the inconvenience (for European travelers in particular) of much longer flights due to the situation in Eastern Europe. So thanks to them for coming to visit! Pretty low snow levels in January meant it was a tough to get out in the backcountry. Just a note to future visitors: don't expect to be able to get out in the backcountry until maybe mid-January, even in a good snow year. There's no real Alpine terrain here, so you need a lot of snow to cover all the small trees, vines and stuff that make up our summer jungle (and this is true for many of Japan's great backcountry destinations). It's not a problem in the resorts, of course - but even for the resorts, think Christmas Day to really be sure the runs will be open and all the lifts running. There's been more international investment in the area, too, with two of the resorts now owned by non-Japanese companies, although the actual running of the areas was still handled by the existing domestic teams. Let's see what develops in the coming seasons; the main thing is that things are changing, as always. Hopefully (as I've often mentioned this season) they will be more proactive in using their websites to get information out earlier. The city does have a page that collects information, too, but many people will go directly to the resort's page first (why look at everything if you want to get specific information?), so they really should update their own site first. But many don't. And that is the end of that rant for the season. And there's still skiing available, and I think spring is a great time to get out and enjoy a good slide. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . Good morning folks. It's Sunday, 2nd April 2023 and the last day of the ski season at Madarao (for both Madarao Mountain Resort and Tangram Ski Circus). Like many regions, 2022-2023 might not have been a classic season in terms of snowfall, but it still offered a whole lot of fun. It was just so good to see a return of overseas visitors and smiling faces this season, and surely there will be many more planning to come for the 2023-2024 season. Madarao and Tangram both managed to remain open until their planned closing dates, and snow cover remained pretty good until the end, especially considering the generally warm conditions March brought us. You can always look back at archive reports and also snowfall data on the Snowfall analysis and Seasonal archive pages on SnowJapan. At the time of writing, skiing and snowboarding are still available in nearby regions, with ski areas in Nozawa, Shiga Kogen, and Hakuba remaining open. So check out those daily reports on SnowJapan to keep up-to-date on those regions. SnowJapan will post an end-of-season message on all the Now reports in early May - once the season has finished in all regions. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. It's another mix of cloud and blue sky this morning. More is sun (and perhaps less cloud) is due over the next few days. Snow cover still holding up. It's Saturday but it feels rather quiet... ----------------------------- A look back at the season so far: until the end of March 2023: Today is the 1st of April, and time for my monthly look back at the season so far. I will try not to be Foolish with my comments! (See what I did there?) 😉 As always, I will begin with my observed snowfall numbers (observed by me from close to the base of Hirafu). And here they are: This season so far, up to and including 31st March, I have observed snowfall on 90 days this season. 5 days in November 2022 27 days in December 2022 27 days in January 2023 25 days in February 2023 6 days in March 2023 The most reported snowfall on any one day this season remains 24cm. This data (updated daily with each report) can be found on the Season archive page here: 2022-2023 season (data from this season) Here is how much snowfall I have measured during March over the last eleven seasons: March 2023: 32cm March 2022: 81cm March 2021: 79cm March 2020: 59cm March 2019: 45cm March 2018: 49cm March 2017: 83cm March 2016: 109cm March 2015: 139cm March 2014: 113cm March 2013: 164cm I don't know about you, but I cannot help but notice those larger numbers from 2013 through 2016. (Check out 2013... hmmm). After a consistent season from the beginning of December until the end of February, snowfall suddenly got much scarcer once we entered March. We had a few days with some decent snow at the beginning of the month, but since 6th March, I have only been able to report fresh snowfall on three days (a total of 7cm). This wasn't just a Niseko or Hokkaido thing. From what I can tell, the whole of Japan had a relatively warm March, and many ski areas in western and central Japan have had to close earlier than planned. Here's how much snowfall I have observed up until the end of March in each of the seasons: 2022/2023 season up to the end of March 2023: 1006cm 2021/2022 season up to the end of March 2022: 1135cm 2020/2021 season up to the end of March 2021: 1201cm 2019/2020 season up to the end of March 2020: 718cm 2018/2019 season up to the end of March 2019: 945cm 2017/2018 season up to the end of March 2018: 1247cm 2016/2017 season up to the end of March 2017: 686cm 2015/2016 season up to the end of March 2016: 983cm 2014/2015 season up to the end of March 2015: 1141cm 2013/2014 season up to the end of March 2014: 1150cm 2012/2013 season up to the end of March 2013: 1459cm So, the total observed snowfall for the season (so far) is 1006cm. Just over 10m. That is less than the previous two seasons but more than the two seasons before that. And it works out slightly below the average for the last eleven seasons (1061cm). Will we get any snowfall in April? Well, it feels very unlikely we'll get any (especially here at base), but stranger things might have happened. And the world is a bit mad, right? So, I dare not rule it out. Here's how much snow I have reported in previous years in April: April 2022: 2cm April 2021: 9cm April 2020: 10cm April 2019: 6cm April 2018: 13cm April 2017: 0cm April 2016: 6cm April 2015: 3cm April 2014: 13cm April 2013: 32cm This data, also updated daily with each report, is also available in detail on the Snowfall analysis page here: Snowfall analysis (graphs and charts and stuff) Spring tending to arrive early is a concern. Still, I am guessing that Niseko businesses are quite pleased with the 2022-2023 season. The opening of borders before winter was a big relief, and many eager folks quickly returned. Service providers should be more prepared for staffing in time for the 2023-2024 season. Hopefully, everything might feel fully back to normal come December. But anyway, the 2022-2023 season isn't over just yet. Niseko Village, Niseko Hanazono and Niseko Moiwa ski areas plan to be open until Sunday, 9th April. And Hirafu and Annupuri aim to continue on until Sunday, 7th May. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. It's April and a beautiful start to the month, with more of the same still forecast over the next few days - possibly until Tuesday. At Hakuba Goryu the downhill course is now closed, so you need to get the gondola back down to base. The Toomi run will be open until tomorrow. Hakuba 47 is now the only ski area where you can still slide down to base. You need to get the gondola back to base at the others that remain open. Someone asked if the ski areas are going to be able to open until Golden Week this year. It's going to depend on nature isn't it, and how warm this month turns out. It might prove to be difficult. Anyway, we are just going to have to wait and see... and enjoy what we have in the meantime! --------------- ABLE Hakuba Goryu Official snow depth: Upper: 170cm / Toomi: 30cm Planned closing date: Sunday 7th May 2023 Notes: The Toomi base area and top area remain open (all except Champion Expert and Champion Dynamic). You now need to get the gondola back down to base from upper areas. Toomi is open until tomorrow (2nd April). The Iimori area is now closed. Hakuba 47 Winter Sports Park Official snow depth: Top: 180cm / Base: 50cm Planned closing date: Sunday 7th May 2023 Notes: Almost all of Hakuba 47 remain open. The only closed area is Freedom Course and the Tree Riding Zones. You can still slide back down to base on R1. The lower section of R7 is now closed. Hakuba Happo-one Official snow depth: Kurobishi (1680m): 175cm / Usagidaira (1400m): 97cm / Nakiyama (800m): 0cm Planned closing date: Sunday 7th May 2023 Notes: The mid to upper areas of Hakuba Happo-one remain largely open. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It's not the most appealing of mornings with some spots of rain. I see Hanazono are actually reporting 2cm of fresh snow on their upper areas (though 'rain' as the weather condition up there as of 8am), so that will probably have disappeared pretty quickly! Hirafu is actually reporting light snow up there, but all the others are going with light rain. You probably get the idea. This isn't due to last all day with a good chance of us getting to see the sun later on. And very probably we will get sunshine over the weekend. In ski area news, Niseko Moiwa have extended their season with a new planned closing date of 9th April (previously 2nd April). They plan to just have the Number 1 pair lift operating for that last week. I'll take a look back at March and post a (up-to-now) season recap tomorrow. --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base 4C, light wind and rain. Moiwa 800m: +1.9C, SSE1.5m/s. Annupuri 1100m: -1.7C, WSW6.7m/s. Mizuno no Sawa: 0.3C, WSW8.8m/s. Hirafu Hanazono: -0.5C, SSW12.2m/s. Hanazono#3: 1.7C, SSW4.4m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape WNW3m/s, Kamui Cape WSW2m/s, 1015hPa, 0.8m wave (3am: S17m/s, 1013hPa, 1.3m wave). The low pressure front has brought rain at the base of the mountain, wet snow and graupel above 1000m and moderately strong S winds on the Hirafu side of the mountain. Gate opening will be delayed. Please follow the patrols instructions. This is the last avalanche report for the season. Thanks to the ski patrol, grooming operators and the lift staff for their help throughout the season. They protect us on the mountain. It reminds me of the cap left by Corky Ward from Jackson Hole Ski Patrol when he visited Niseko many years ago - "My job is better than your vacation". The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. It's the last day of March. April tomorrow. Blimey, winter really comes and goes so very quickly. It's just not fair! But anyway. Fine feel-good weather yesterday. This morning we have a mix of cloud and (mostly lighter) blue sky with a hazy feel looking east. And we should expect sunny skies over the weekend. All lower runs at Tsugaike are now closed and so you need to get the gondola back down to base. --------------- ABLE Hakuba Goryu Official snow depth: Upper: 180cm / Toomi: 35cm Planned closing date: Sunday 7th May 2023 Notes: The Toomi base area and top area remain open (all except Champion Expert). The Iimori area is now closed. You can still slide back down to base but the Toomi is now getting very narrow. Hakuba 47 Winter Sports Park Official snow depth: Top: 185cm / Base: 55cm Planned closing date: Sunday 7th May 2023 Notes: Almost all of Hakuba 47 remain open. The only closed area is Freedom Course and the Tree Riding Zones. You can still slide back down to base. A bit of walking is required on the lower part of R7. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. We have had some changeable conditions already this morning. At the moment there is a lot of cloud around, some remaining for, and the sun breaking through in places too. A little colder this morning but still above zero across the mountain. Also, it's windy, and at the start of the day all top lifts are on hold. The three lifts at Hanazono, Niseko Gondola (at Niseko Village) and Annupuri Gondola are on hold too. Hanazono are saying that their lifts are undergoing some kind of check, so might be up and running soon. I'm going to have some toast. --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base +4C, thick fog foggy turning to sunny. Moiwa 800m: +2.24C, NW2.6m/s, thick fog. Annupuri 1100m: +0.9C, NNW9.7m/s. Mizuno no Sawa: +0.5C, NNE6.3m/s. Hirafu Hanazono: -0.3C, NW12.1m/s. Hanazono#3: +1.4C, NNE5.4m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape NNE12m/s, Kamui Cape E3m/s, 1007hPa, 0.0m waves. Cold air is flowing into the area, there was a thick fog up to 800m at dawn which burned off by 7am, however the peak is still shrouded in cloud. The wind is expected to drop after noon. Depending on lift operation gates are expected to open. Snow melt continues from yesterday's warm air, be careful of full depth avalanches. Avoid entering valley and gully bottoms. Colder air is expected to flow in at higher levels this afternoon, freezing and hardening the mountain. The surface avalanche risk will be high with a westerly storm even this late in the season. Above 1200m Mt Yotei (or similar) be careful. For safety stay out of creeks and gullies during and right after a storm. Most accidents can be avoided with care. Snow is disappearing fast on the groomers. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . It's not a particularly inspiring morning. We had some rain yesterday evening and we have has some light rain this morning, though it has eased off now. Some limited visibility out there, especially in higher elevations. The valiant struggle to remain open as long as possible with the snow melting continues... Hakuba Cortina were planning on being open until 2nd April, but they are now saying that they might not be able to last that long. The Number 2 and 4 lifts will be open over the weekend, but a decision about what happens beyond that will be made on Monday morning. The two lower runs to base at Happo-one that remain open are surely not going to last much longer. Even now, they now both officially 'involve some walking'. See the photo below. And you can also see what the lower Toomi run looks like on the photo below. The lower part of R1 and R2 are now being left ungroomed. The only closed area is Freedom Course and the Tree Riding Zones. Hakuba Cortina Official snow depth: 147cm Planned closing date: Sunday 2nd April 2023 Notes: Hakuba Cortina remains part open. 7 of 16 courses available. 2 of 6 lifts operating. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here We have received a little more snow yesterday and it is a pleasant early morning. There is a lot of cloud around, but the sun is appearing at times and we are probably going to be seeing more of the sun today and indeed over the next few days. The sun will be warming things up again. Might I add, as I am about to post this at 8:20am, there is some very (very) light snow falling too. Can you believe it's the second half of March already? Whooosh. By this stage of the season I always feel there's a much more relaxed feel without the crowds of the peak weeks. Some people definitely prefer that. --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -2C, trace new snow, refrozen, sunny. Moiwa 800m: -4.0C, 2cm new snow, good visibility. Annupuri 1100m: -7.4C, trace new snow, good visibility. Mizuno no Sawa: -6.0C, WSW3.5m/s. Hirafu Hanazono: -7.0C, SSE6.6m/s. Hanazono#3: -3.7C, SSW2.1m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape WSW6m/s, Kamui Cape SW13m/s, 1017hPa, 1.3m waves. Its sunny under a high pressure system, a moderately strong SW wind is blowing at higher levels and shallow snowdrifts have accumulated in ribbons of new snow. Take care around 1200m on Mt Yotei. As temperatures rise today full depth avalanches could easily occur around 800m as slopes start to slump under their own weight. Do not wait at the bottom of open slopes or in the valley bottoms. Many people use this information, however some people still ignore it. The more people ignoring this information the more likely an accident will occur. Accidents always have a reason, often overconfidence or just ignorance of the dangers. This information is issued to prevent deadly accidents. The Hirafu Super Course is closed due to the increased risk of full-depth avalanches. Do not duck ropes to enter strictly off limits area Yunosawa. The danger of a full depth avalanche razing the valley is increasing. Peak gates open. Be aware of sudden changes in weather.
