The day is starting with snow falling - light at times, moderate at times and the wind is behaving. More lifts are operating now, including all the gondolas. Check out the list below for the latest. We still could do with more snow and need it for the mountain to fully open, but forecasts are still looking good for regular snow that will be heavy at times. Most significant upcoming snowfall currently due on Friday. Santa and his entourage should be very pleased on their upcoming visit. By the way, be wary of people pretending to be Santa at other ski areas in Japan and other countries. In department stores, too. The real Santa chooses Niseko, of course. ;) (He might have difficulty finding mince pies and eggnog, though. There's no Kentucky Fried Chicken in Niseko either. Hmmm. The snow on the ground is very light and fluffy and crumbles easily after being packed into a ball. Diamond Valley is open though early on the Utopia area is showing as closed. So the ski area opening is still limited as we wait for more snow. The best chance of upcoming good snowfall is around Friday, but it should be keeping cold until then. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Yesterday was a curious one. As noted yesterday morning, the snow clouds that were hoping for mostly missed us, but it was snowing a bit later in the day giving us several cm down at base. The ski area has reported 10cm of snow at Yamabiko and 5cm at Uenotaira since yesterday afternoon. The snow depth number this morning is up to 35cm. Given only the minimal change in conditions, ski area operations appear to be the same this morning as they were yesterday, so it's just the Yamabiko D run that is available. Around Friday is the next due snowfall and it does look promising. Hopefully this time the snow clouds will park directly above our mountain and refuse to budge! At 8am it is very cloudy but quite bright and I wonder if we might get some sun. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . After a dry spell, we have some fresh snow. It's a modest amount, for sure, with the ski area only reporting 3cm on upper areas. A bit surprising and it seems that heavier snowfall decided to check out parts of northern Niigata. Hopefully, we will get some during the day and forecasts are looking more interesting towards the end of the week for heavy snow. We just have to deal with whatever nature decided to deliver, don't we? Anyway, the ski area is re-opening this morning. The Nagasaka gondola and Yamabiko Number 2 quad will be operating, as well as the Yu Road facility down in the village. Details below. The Yamabiko D course re-opens too, and the ski area is making a note of saying that it is not suitable for beginners. Naski, ever the helpful bright-green vegetable, has started up the Naski-go ride (sledge via snowmobile) connection between the Hikage and Nagasaka base areas. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. And a very good morning it is too. Oh yes. After a day of snow yesterday, this morning we woke to copious amounts of beautiful snow on the ground. I just measure slightly over 30cm. Expect that much and possibly more on the mountain. Early on, Hirafu are saying that they are preparing to open up more of the mountain. No confirmed details just yet, though it looks like they are going to get the Hirafu gondola moving. The same will probably apply to the other ski areas too... expect additions to what is open during the day. A good thing. I have updated the info below as best I can just before opening time There are a lot of people around now with more arriving every day. Everyone should be happy this morning, especially when they hear of the forecast consistent snowfall through Christmas. I am going have some celebratory toast. Might go skiing too. ------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base -8C, intermittent snow, 40cm snowfall in 12h. No data from Moiwa & Annupuri. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -15.6C, ESE1.7m/s, 40cm snowfall, Hana3 chair: -11.7C, NNW6.2m/s (max15m/s), 40cm snowfall. Coastal data: Benkei cape NW17m/s, Kamui cape W12m/s, 1017hPa, 2.6m waves. Winter pressure distribution with tight isobars resulting in continuous snowstorm on the mountains and the sea. The snowdrifts are accumulating thick, 100+cm and more, above 800m elevation. The cornices are very unstable and could fall anytime. According to the snowfall transition and observations, the stabilisation of the snowpack is delayed. 30-40cm thick slab avalanche risk triggered by ski-stimulation or falling cornices remains high today. Be careful under chairlifts and side banks. This information is issued for the safety of all ski resorts users. Most accidents can be avoided if everyone is conscious of the dangers. It is highly recommended not to drop into big slopes above 1000m elevation for a while after the weather ameliorates. Be wise. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . Perhaps we shouldn't always believe forecasts so much... It has to be said, that we were expecting much more. As I write this report, there is a lot of cloud and a break in the snow - there's even a bit of blue sky. Not to worry just yet. Back to 'forecasts' (of which I check a few), after some for today (perhaps), all of them show some good snow action around Friday. I'll let you know how the week goes. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . We had a great dump of snow yesterday. The snow today is crunchy underfoot. It packs very well under pressure. This is the stuff the skies and snowboarders have been waiting for. The roads have not peen plowed, so the roads have a pack layer of snow. Chains or snow tires are needed. Every once and a while a strong gust of wind comes and disperses the snow. The Chuo are is once again open this morning.. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Brrrrr, it's has been a cold early morning here in Shiga Kogen. It has been snowing lightly in places at times too, but it's also quite bright. Varied weather so far. Not a whole lot of fresh snow since yesterday, which is perhaps a bit of a surprise. A quick scan of all the available info seems to indicate that ski areas are opening as they have been this morning, but with no new additions. More than a few cm of snow is needed to kick-start most places to open up. Beyond today, the next chance for that looks like it'll be Friday. It shouldn't be warming up much before then, which is a good thing. I hear there was some congestion on the way down from Shiga Kogen yesterday evening, due to a stuck vehicle. It was taking a long time for people to get back down to the valley.
