It is currently overcast, but in the distance I can see faint blue in the clouds. More of the mountain is now open, though we are still a way from being 'fully open'. More snow will be required for that. Looks like we should get some tomorrow evening. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Merry Christmas! Just a little (but particularly lovely) snowfall since yesterday. The sun is out as well this morning. Beautiful. The Free Ride Park at Hirafu opens from today. Little by little, things are gradually becoming available. By the way, if you are not in Niseko and your presents are late today, it is because Santa is probably staying on here in Niseko for some more gnarly turns. Can't blame him, of course. It should be a very fine morning! By the way. As I write this, Hanazono still has 25-30cm on their (apparently updated) United new snowfall data this morning. As that is the same as yesterday, I'm guessing it was overlooked. (Let's just say that it is extremely unlikely they got 30cm since yesterday). Sorry to mention this again, but I really wish that the ski areas put more care into those updates. SnowJapan even gets people writing in about the official ski area website and its sluggish updates - even though it's got nothing to do with us. And please do check out this next message... ------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base 6am: -9℃, 5cm snowfall in 12h, calm and good visibility. Moiwa Mikaeri 764m: -14℃, WSW54m/s, 180cm snowpack. Hirafu Hanazono: -9-9℃, NNE2.6m/s, Hanazono#3: -7℃, NW2.2m/s. Coastal data: Benkei cape SW3m/s, Kamui cape WSW8m/s, 1022hPa, 0.9m waves. The atmospheric pressure gradient is flat and the mountain and the sea is calm. There are no notable snowfall or snowdrifts developments. The general avalanche risk is low. The phrase 'Do not duck the ropes' mentioned in the Niseko Rules, was created by vice-mayor of Niseko, Keita Yamamoto. This phrase is based on Niseko's experience that if one person goes through a rope, others will imitate it and accidents will eventually occur, and it has been used on awareness posters since 2010. Out of bounds skiing is not open yet, however there were two rescue missions yesterday, one in Yu no Sawa and one in O-sawa. The normalisation of entering strictly off-limits areas led to the tragic loss of a young Russian man in March last season. Is it really fun to ski behind the back of the ski patrols? Avalanche control using explosives will start in Mizuno no Sawa from today. Please follow the ski patrol’s instructions. This place is a ski area and the users are required to follow its rules. I think most people were concentrating on enjoying the fresh snow. The Paradise quad and ski run are now both available. For now, lower areas of the ski area are not yet open and you need to get a gondola back down to base. This morning we have some sunshine and it looks like it will be a fine day. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. Another 15+cm of fresh snow at base with ski areas reporting up to 30cm in upper areas. We still need more snow to fill places out and for those top lifts and gates to open, but forecasts are good for the consistent snow to continue. Maybe the heaviest around Wednesday. As I write this report it is snowing moderately but wind doesn't seem to be any problems. There should be some nice conditions to enjoy out there! It's Christmas Eve! Somehow that doesn't mean as much to me as it once did (pre-Japan). Anyway, there will be fireworks at the end of night skiing tonight here in Hirafu. And, of course, it being Christmas, Santa is here today*. Yes, he has once again come to his favourite ski area in the world for some super-gnarly fun between handing out all those presents. He's even going to be making a few scheduled appearances for photo opportunities and stuff. Hirafu are promising that he will be 'offer(ing) wonderful Christmas gifts for your children', which sounds fabulous. Funny, they are also noting that he is 'very energetic and very good at skiing'. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Finally, Myoko-style snow, and more openings - although the resorts are once again SLOW in letting us know. OK, I get up really early to plow snow (in several locations), but I'd figure by the time I get finished the resorts, too, should now what they're going to do. Seven am? Not early for a ski resort, right? But no info from most of them. And now 7:30 and no change (and, Alpen Blick, where are you hiding the current area info? Don't really care about your glamping facilities...) But anyway, the important stuff. Akakura Onsen is "pre-opening" today, with the Yodel No. 1 and Yodel No. 4 lifts running. Akakan: don't know but rumors were the gondola and top lift will run. Suginohara is scheudled to open, but only has info from November up. Myoko RunRun seems to be open for the kids and beginners. Seki is open. Tangram is not. Madarao: not yet. Arai: Gondola, Saroku No. 1, Zendana lifts. And Kurohime, not yet. I'll go to the full chart listings from tomorrow. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Nozawa. Excellent news to report this morning. Very large amount of new snowfall. It might have taken time to get going, but overnight we got... a lot! The ski area was reporting just 3-4cm of snow on the upper areas of the mountain yesterday afternoon. And this morning they have added a further 90cm! JMA (Japan Meteorological Agency) are reporting 60cm over 24 hours, and I have measured 64cm. The list of lifts and runs open remains unchanged at the beginning of the day, but this amount of snow will of course allow more of the mountain to open soon. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Good morning from Shiga Kogen. I bring good news. Very good news. Kumanoyu is reporting 40cm of fresh snowfall. Yakebitaiyama is reporting 50cm of fresh snowfall. There's a lot of snow around this morning! About half a metre of it in untouched places. Good quality stuff too. We're in one of those Twilight Zone places this morning where updated information is almost impossible to get. People will be running around doing stuff --- stuff other than updating info! So I don't have any major news to report in terms of ski area operations. That's why there's no list today because I am guessing it would be out of date as there is a good chance that some ski areas will be opening for the first time this morning and more lifts will be moving. But that is good news. I hope to be able to bring more details tomorrow.
