The latest Zao Now report can be found here . Morning from Zao. Last night it continued snowing. Early on this morning there was still fog around with some very light snow falling but there is now some blue sky and sunshine peeking through the fast moving clouds. (Looks like limited visibility still higher up). A good new layer of snow again so conditions should be fun out there. According to the official site at time of the report the top section of the Zao Ropeway is on hold. Ski area operations: Zao Onsen is now mostly open with just a few restrictions. Night skiing with the Onsen Number 2 quad (8:45pm) scheduled to be operating. A bit more snow overnight; there must have been some strong winds blowing at some time during the night, because there was a lot of birch bark bits all over the surface of the snow this morning, and some shovels blown around. Calm early, though, when I got up for the (luckily light) snow clearing activities. One request for visitors: don't ride on the streets! We had a big group of boarders coming down the main street heading down the hill just north of the Kanko gondola last night, mostly sitting (so really hard to see) and one guy standing. In Japan, there are laws, and there's local agreement, and while there isn't a specific law against it, the agreement locally is you don't do it. Cars can't see you, especially if it's snowing; generally it freaks people out. And it's generally disrespectful, especially if a local asks you to stop. And you don't. Ain't your home, kids, so play nice (or go home). And most people are great, by the way. That was curmudgeonly! Good to get it off my chest.... The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Just going back to yesterday, Okushiga Kogen reported an impressive 30-40cm of fresh snowfall with more than that in wind blown areas. Very nice. After a windy night if feels like the weather has started to clear up and calming down this morning, with the sun breaking through clouds in places; though there is still a lot of cloud around and it is actually still snowing in some places. (See: Okushiga Kogen). Feels like conditions (both weather and snow) are going to be really great for the weekend with a good chance of sunshine. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Yesterday we even got a spell of sunshine down at base in the afternoon. The lower slopes were busier than usual, of course, with the top of the mountain closed. This morning it still feels a bit windy, but the top area is back open. Woohoo! A lot of people are heading on up there right now to delight in all that lovely new snow. It's mostly cloudy at the moment, with some very light snow falling at times, and there have been some patches of blue sky at times. (Are they 'patches'? Been in Japan too long...). The forecasts are for cloud/snow showers at times today. Perhaps there is more of a chance of clearer skies tomorrow. The official ski area site is confusing me a bit with their snowfall reporting this morning. They seem to be reporting 17cm of snow overnight since 3pm on Yamabiko and 20cm on Hikage, but at the same time are also reporting some data in the 'since 8am' field. Perhaps that is just left over from yesterday. I don't know... if I get the chance, I'll ask Naski. Anyway, fresh snow. Let's playing! The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It's snowing quite heavily as I write this at just past 8am and I have a lovely 19cm of fresh to report this morning. Which is more than the ski areas are reporting. Unfortunately, it's windy too and the wind is almost certainly going to affect top lifts and probably more too. Limited operations at the start of the day. (To avoid confusion I have taken the lift info out of the list below). Snow is due for the day. (As is the wind!) Hopefully tomorrow will be calmer; there sure is going to be a lot of people eager to get up to those top areas when they open! Over the last few days I have seen a few sections on Japanese national TV news about Niseko. It has been fairly predictable kind of content regarding inbound popularity/prices, but interesting all the same. (Well, slightly interesting). I'll put some thoughts together in my January review early next month. ------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base 6am: -5C, snow storm, snowdrift development. Moiwa 800m: -7.9C, NNW11.7m/s, 30.0m/s at 4am, cornices and snowdrifts rapidly developing. Mikaeri 764m from live camera: -8C, strong drifting snow, snowdrift development increasing. Annupuri 1100m: -10.2C, NNW6.6m/s, strong wind and snow. Village 1000m: -9.0C, NNW5.2m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -10.0C, no wind data. Hanazono#3: -7.9℃, NNE9.3m/s. Coastal data: Benkei cape: NNW 16.0m/s, Kamui cape: 13.0m/s, 999hPa, 5.0m waves. The mountains and seas are experiencing severe weather due to the strong winterly pressure distribution, wave heights in the Japan sea are exceeding 5 metres. From the observation and weather data, reports from ski patrols and groomer operators, the avalanche risk is extremely high at any elevation. All the gates will be closed. Do not duck rope to go out of the gates. It’s more enjoyable to go to an onsen on a day like this. There are days like this. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . It's another cold morning in Zao. It started snowing around 2pm yesterday, with some major wind gusts and limited visibility, and it looks like it hasn't stopped with a good amount of new snow down to base. There is fog halfway up the mountain and the snow is currently coming at us almost horizontally. Snow might continue into tomorrow but this new snowfall will have given the runs a very welcome refresh. The summit area has added a big increase to official snow depth busting through 1m up to 1.5m. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . After the nice snowfall yesterday, we didn't really have all that much overnight, but it is really coming down right now. You can add several more cms to the official number for the morning, and I really do a serious, formal check every morning (if you doubt my numbers, and I know there are those in some of the surrounding resorts that don't always get as much as Akakan does who do doubt some of my numbers, come over and poke some snow with me in the morning!). It's coming down at a rate of a few centimeters per hour now. Nice. Very Myoko. Just a little warning; lots of snow and a really firm base underneath: sluffing of snow in the backcountry is always something to think about here. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Some lovely light snow again this morning with cold and windy conditions and limited visibility. Some lifts might be affected but generally ski areas are open. It's full-on winter conditions right now. Kumanoyu seems to be saying there have 40cm of fresh again this morning, and I can't vouch for that as it's less than that back here in Hasuike. Yakebitaiyama were reporting 10cm very early morning and I my measurement is 21cm. Still, a decent amount and it is still coming down hard and due for the day. Extra care needed today as conditions are a bit wild. Things should be much calmer by the weekend --- and conditions should be pretty great! It's quite interesting to see Mammoth reporting a snow depth of 270cm when all the others are currently hanging around 150cm. Traditionally snow depth numbers from ski areas in Shiga Kogen remain pretty static, even after heavy snow.
