- Myoko Now: Monday 9th December 2024
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 21cm Snowfall at base this season 76cm Posted on Monday 9th December 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Another good pre-season snowfall, and thus a report to keep us up to date on the building snowpack. One more thing I saw yesterday was two people (not Japanese) in full backcountry gear exiting from Akakan. Now, I hate to be the grumpy old guy ("you kids stop skiing on my lawn!") but there’s a good reason not to do downhill backcountry skiing, or in fact to ski on the resorts. First is that we live in a jungle area, really, in summer, and you need a lot of snow to make it possible to even turn in the woods. For the ski areas, there’s lots of stuff under that snow (plates, pipes, trails even) that the ski areas are responsible for. So be nice and don’t make things difficult! To me it's kind of like going surfing when there's no waves; wait and they will come. The curmudgeon has spoken. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 9cm Snowfall at base this season 95cm Posted on Monday 9th December 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. So, after all that snow, it eased off yesterday and we have some lovely blue skies and sunshine this morning with a bank of cloud around the mountain backdrop. It's a beautiful morning to be out there (and I am keen to go and partake myself once I have posted this report). From today, you should be able to slide back down to Toomi base at Hakuba Goryu, though that is not yet open early morning. Perhaps a bit later. More sun is forecast tomorrow. Then more snow on Wednesday. And more significant snow as we enter the weekend. That sounds like a good pattern to me. -------------------------------- ABLE Hakuba Goryu New snowfall (as reported by the ski area): Top: 15cm Official snow depth (as reported by the ski area): Top: 130cm Top: 20cm Lifts: Telecabin gondola Alps Number 1 pair Alps Number 3 pair Courses: Panorama Grand Prix Super Technical Possibly more later on... - Niseko Now: Sunday 8th December 2024
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 18cm Snowfall at base this season 114cm Posted on Sunday 8th December 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. I have another almost 20cm of snowfall to report to you this morning. This steady 'daily incoming' of fluffy goodness is very pleasing. We might well get smaller numbers over the next few days, and perhaps even some clearer skies at times (particularly Tuesday?), to be followed by more snow from the second half of the week. The gondola over at Annupuri is making a season debut this morning as the mountain gradually opens up with a few more runs becoming available. We still want and need more snow, of course! ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base 7am: -5℃, 20cm snowfall in 12h, minimal wind influence. Moiwa 800m: -9.1℃, NNW15m/s, light wind load. Hanazono 1000m: -10.9℃, wind 4.2m/s (direction n/a). Coastal data: Benkei cape NNW15m/s, Kamui cape NW11m/s, 1007hPa, 1.9m waves. Other locations to be set. Winter pressure distribution remains, cold air is flowing in and moderate wind and snowfall developing snowdrifts are persisting. The wind-load slabs are forming up slowly and stabilizing as they do. Looking at this morning’s weather data and observations, the general avalanche risk is low except at 1200m leeward slopes under cornices. The snow is fantastic, proper Japow condition as would late Colin Hackworth say. Perfect density and easy to ride. Beware of tree stumps and bushes lurking under the surface. The snowpack is still shallow and the off-piste is closed. Please respect the Niseko Rules. Sunlight is weak and the slopes undulations are hard to see. Beware of overspeeding and hitting trees. One injury could ruin your season. Niseko is always concerned about everyone’s safety. Have a nice day. ------------------------------------ Individual ski area information for Sunday 8th December 2024 The below snow depth and snowfall numbers are manually checked each morning from official sources. Utopia is also now open for this 'pre-open'. No announcement yet regarding tomorrow. As things are, the ski area plans to be closed from tomorrow through Friday before the proper 'opening' on 14th.
