The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It is obviously really great to be able to keep on reporting incoming snowfall, and today I have measured another 22cm to add to the totals (taking my observed total from base to 173cm for the season so far). Lovely. Obviously, conditions should be yummy out there and continuing to get better. As that snow keeps on coming, more runs are gradually opening up but important to note that the top lifts at Hirafu, Village and Annupuri are yet to get going. Niseko Moiwa seem to be starting up their quad lift this morning. Night skiing starts from today at the four Niseko United ski areas. Annupuri is partying all night until, er, 7:30pm, with the other three closing up at 7:00pm. That's more like 'evening skiing' rather than 'night skiing', isn't it?! Still, Hirafu plans to have both gondolas operating for 'evening skiing', as well as the Ace Family quad and King Holiday pair lifts. I have discussed this before in these reports, but long-timers will recall that night skiing used to be until much later into the actual night, hence the cunning name! I am pretty sure my memory is correct in recalling that Hirafu, for example, was open until 9:30pm in the 1990s. A close to hand guidebook from 2016 shows night skiing until 8:30pm, and a guidebook from 2021 shows night skiing until 8:00pm. So it seems to have gradually been cut back in recent years. I do find it curious that they are still closing so (relatively) early here in Niseko, though right now the people who make decisions clearly don't feel the need. Perhaps sometime in the future the night skiing thing might be extended again back to how it used to be. I would like that. (Side note: I don't think the cutting back on night skiing is a phenomenon unique to Niseko). Anyway, good times! :) ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -8℃, 25cm snowfall in 12h, and going up 5cm/h. Moiwa800m: -10.6℃, NNW5.4m/s, 150cm snowpack and growing. Hanazono 1000m: -12.2℃, NNE5.6m/s, snowpack growing. Coastal data: Kamui cape NNW9m/s, Kamui cape N6m/s, 1010hPa, 1.5m waves. The isobars have spread out, however the winter pressure distribution continues and cold air is flowing in. The snowdrifts development around 1000m elevation is mild and the overall avalanche risk is low. Bushes are mostly buried around 750m elevation and lines are open, but still thick in lower elevation and not suitable for skiing yet. The snow is fast today, flakes are crystalline without much wind influence. Avalanches can happen when the conditions align and do not depend on the amount of snow. It only becomes an accident if a person is caught in one. Highly wind-affected snow is dense, heavy and sticky, and is likely to form slabs. It is strongly recommended not to stimulate leeward slopes with heavy windload in a high-wind day (18+m/s) when cornices develop drastically. Whether there are notable weak layers or not, these quickly growing windloaded snowdrift slabs are extremely unstable and can slide into an avalanche. Weak sunlight today and the slopes undulations are hard to see. With 25cm of fresh being reported again from the top of the mountain, I am a bit surprised that more terrain/lifts aren't open this morning - the day seems to be starting with the same operations. What is open should be in great shape, though, with that new snowfall. And it's a pretty big area in itself, of course. Though I am guessing things might start getting a bit busier from today. We might get some more snowfall during today, but the biggest haul seems set for tomorrow night into Sunday with more in the coming week too. Thank you, Nature! The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Good morning from Shiga Kogen. Varying snow this morning with Yakebitaiyama reporting 25cm but I'm seeing less than that. Still everywhere is good and white and the snow is gradually increasing with a healthy looking forecast for the coming week. Okushiga Kogen ski area has opened this morning and has three lifts operating (Number 1, 2 and 3 pairs). Perhaps surprisingly, there don't seem to have been any other new openings to report. Hmmmm. Perhaps I suppose we need more snow for that to happen. So for now, we have 6 ski areas open --- but none of them are properly lift/course connected yet. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . I had planned to get out an early report on this, the opening day for many of the resorts. The snowplows decided not to show up until nearly 6:30 am, and part of the whole reason for plowing is to get rid of the big wall of snow the plows throw up along the road. So up at 5, nothing going on, then a mad dash after the big machines. But here I am with opening news! (fanfare, please). An amazingly good snowfall for the first day, with 35cm of fresh out there. It’s very loose, so one could get themselves bogged down or stuck out there. Not bad for the first day. Good morning in this first day of the ski season at Naeba. 11cm of snow welcomes us and the continuing cold weather means the snow we have is good condition. It is cloudy but there are some patches of blue sky at times too. The Number 2 gondola, Takenokodaira lift and two lower lifts are operating and you can ski/board back down from the upper run. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. And it's another very fine and snowy morning. What a treat this early season is proving to be in this region. A special thanks to the Snow Gods! (Please keep it coming, we'll be good boys and girls, honest). OK, so Tsugaike has increased its snow depth by about 40cm this morning and Hakuba 47 is boasting of, appropriately enough, '47cm' of new snowfall in some places. Jigatake down to the south of Hakuba is reporting 20cm of fresh snow. Cortina is reporting 35cm of fresh snowfall. From this morning, 9 of the 10 ski areas in the 'Hakuba Valley' promotional grouping (of ski areas in Hakuba Village, Otari Village and Omachi City) are now at least part open. Only Hakuba Iwatake remains closed and it plans to open on Friday 20th. I have made changes to the listings and information presented below. Ski areas are listed in alphabetical order and I am going to try and keep track of what is open each morning. In this early season period, and as ski areas go from being part open to mostly open to fully open, I'll gradually make changes. Think of it as an early season work in progress! Phew. It's always a hectic period but thankfully this time around we are being blessed with the snow. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Perhaps not as much as I thought we might get, but I do have another 6cm to report since yesterday. But those forecasts still tell us to expect consistent snow to continue falling. Yey! ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base -6℃, 5cm snowfall in 12h (more snow is expected during the day), calm. Moiwa 800m: -9℃, NW6.8m/s (15m/s gusts). Hanazono 1000m: -10.7℃, N3.8m/s, snowdrifts developing slowly. Coastal data: Benkei cape NW14m/s, Kamui cape W11m/s, 1017hPa, 1.6m waves. The winter pressure distribution persists, however looking at the past 12h coastal wind/waves data and observations in the Niseko mountain range, the overall avalanche risk is lowering. 12h snowfall amount is small and snowdrifts are slowly developing. The bushes are still thick, but the snow quality in the treeruns is good. Off piste area access is still restricted from the resorts. Please abide by the Niseko Rules. Weather observation stations are not fully prepared and data is lacking. Winter mountains are inherently dangerous. You are responsible for the decisions you make. There appears to have been some strong wind overnight as there are snow mounds in various places. No official news just yet, but surely we can expect more of the mountain to open from tomorrow.
