The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . Good morning from Madarao. Ski lifts are both Madarao and Tangram are going to be moving from this morning as we start the 2024-2025 season! Madarao has 3 lifts scheduled to be operating and 13 courses available. Tangram has 2 lifts for their 'pre-open'. Madarao is reporting 30cm of fresh snow too by early this morning, and I agree, so that's a very fine way to start the season. There is more snow lined up on the forecasts over the coming days with some clearer skies also possible here and there. As I write this a lot of cloud but the snow has eased off. It's quite bright too, but we do still have snow forecast. Variable! Season in! --------------- By the way. Sorry for my lack of update last night. I was intending to, but I was starting to feel very unwell with a high temperature in the afternoon and had to turn off machines and get some rest. Not feeling totally great this morning, but improved. It's hanging from the trees again this morning, and there's might be up to 10cm in some places - though not so much at my near ski area base measuring point. As per webcam, it looks like there has been more on this side of the mountain than over on the Tangram side. Still, I'm feeling excited and positive about all this. It started yesterday and we have actually received a decent layer of snow here in Madarao overnight. I have measured 11cm at my normal measuring point, but there is actually even more than that in places. It's still very early. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . As the ski season ends at Madarao and Tangram today, I have been thinking about the season that has been. And what a very curious season 2023-2024 has been! There’s no way of getting round it - we had relatively low snowfall during most of the season. But the less-than-normal snowfall wasn’t just a Madarao thing. Rather, it was a pattern seen in much of Japan. The word ‘danto’ 暖冬 (warm winter) was used a lot. In the bigger picture, we should be grateful that our ski areas could open all the way through winter... other regions were not so lucky. Still, we expect consistent and heavy snowfall here in northern Nagano, right? Happily, March 2024 surprised everyone by delivering a very impressive 234cm (my measurement) of snowfall. That is easily the most snowfall I have measured in March - and more than any other month this season. The previous most snowfall measured in the month of March was 145cm in 2013-2014, and even that was much more than average! The late showing means that the total snowfall number for the season is 728cm, almost exactly the same as last season (731cm). Looking at the graphs over the years, that seems fairly ‘average’ for the season as a whole. And it turns out that we end the season with good snow cover on the mountain and some of the biggest snow depth numbers of the season too. Weird, but thanks March! I think it is important to remember that while the raw snowfall data is important and interesting, it is not the whole story. To get a good idea of how the season went, the ups and the downs, please do go back and read the commentary contained in the individual reports. Anyway, that's it from me this season. Thanks for reading the reports. I hope that everyone who visited Madarao enjoyed their time here, and were lucky with the timing too! I know lots of people I met said they would be back. That's always a good sign. I will be back in late autumn as the 2024-2025 winter season approaches. Hopefully next season we will be treated to a season of classic, heavy, more-than-normal, beautiful snowfall. Yes, there is some cloud remaining but it's a really nice early morning with just a little snow from last night. Perhaps it might cloud over and there be some more light snow today - that's what forecasts seem to show. But early on, those first lifts should be really good this morning. More clear-cut weather seems likely around Friday and Saturday morning before new snow due by Sunday morning. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . Good morning from Madarao. It's the first day of the season. And what better to celebrate than a decent amount of snowfall. Madarao ski area is reporting 50cm of fresh snowfall, giving it a snow depth of 70cm this morning. My measurement is 52cm, and there is a bit more or less than that in places. Whatever, it's a very good showing that should make a big difference. The snow has eased off just now, and it even feels like it might be getting a bit brighter. Is that the sun trying to show through? Anyway, it's great news and now time to start enjoying. Ski area operations are limited, but I'm guessing there is a good chance that more will be opening up quite quickly. A sunny day is expected. While it is a chilly start, we'll probably get fairly mild temperatures creeping over into (low) positive number territory. There was a small amount of snow overnight; Madarao is reporting 5cm. Hopefully a bit more than that tomorrow with some more snow due overnight tonight. And that's about it for the moment, really.
