There was the possibility of some heavy snow, but we basically had a day of light fall through the day, not much accumulation, and then increasing snowfall in the evening. By this morning, though, we had about 40cm of fresh, with a pretty strong, steady wind from the north. At the moment it doesn't look strong enough to interfere with lift operations, but you never know. The Coast Guard reports that the wind has been coming down since yesterday, and the atmospheric pressure going up, so maybe things will stabilize during the day (you thought I was just looking out the window to do these reports, right?) The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Sunday 25th May 2025... last day of the official ski season here in Shiga Kogen. It is almost 8 weeks since many of the ski areas in Shiga Kogen closed for the season, but the lift at Shibutoge has managed to remain open until today. I probably say this every year, but the spring season always seems so very, very long. So, that's it for the 2024-2025 season. The ski season may be over, but Shiga Kogen is, of course, popular through the year. Hopefully we will be treated to some pleasant weather during this 'green season', though even up here we have to expect heat during summer. (Thankfully not nearly as much as down in the valleys!) I plan to be back in November to start up reporting for the 2025-2026 season. See you then! The latest Furano Now report can be found here . Hello and welcome back to Furano Now!! Happy New Year, or at least Happy New Season to you. Are you in shape yet? Have you got new goodies to try out this year? Ready to let 'er rip? After a record high, astoundingly hotter than normal summer here in Hokkaido, while I can hardly wait for winter, I'm just happy the heat is gone. At times, I felt like a Londoner (Ah, the heat!! It's up to 33 C again! Jeeves, bring me some sherry!) To kick things off, Furano actually got a chunk of snow just 3 days ago. It's not going to stick around, but it was satisfying to see it falling, and to see the pure white slopes afterwards. As our beloved founder, Herr SnowJapan, likes to say, "Snow is excite." Herr SnowJapan has also instructed me to report this early season precipitation, despite it melting away. It's still part of the yearly weather pattern. This year is a La Nina year, so "statistically speaking", we should have "more than average snowfall" in Central Hokkaido. Now that Billy Gates has given up on Climate Change, let's hope the remaining players in the weather game are accurate. Perhaps the biggest news this pre-season was the October 22 announcement by the Prince Hotel chain that Furano Ski Resort has been added to the Ikon pass for the 2025-26 ski season. You Ikon folks can now ski up to 7 days per season in Furano. This should bring more visitors to town, so will be good for the local restaurants and accommodation. Let's hope the Prince uses any increased revenue for capital improvements for the resort. One can always hope. As Andy Dufresne said, "Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things." As winter sports enthusiasts, we are full of hope, always hoping for new snow, lots of snow, and then more specifically, tons of super light powder. Yes, hope is a good thing. And now we come to the huge "Elefant im Raum" (don't know why I'm in German mode today): The infamous Furano Zone 1 Quad Chair. Questions swirl online regarding its status, with many understandably wary to book a vacation to Furano if the darn thing isn't fixed. For those who missed the excitement last year, here is a quick recap: In early January, the 1 Quad suffered what would be politely explained as Major Mechanical Failure. Apparently, the horizontal wheel thingy at the top of the lift, which I now know is called the Return Bullwheel, cracked. Hmmm, not good. As you can surmise, these are not laying around in the warehouse, especially for a 25-30 year old lift. So the lift closed for the season, while a new Return Bullwheel was manufactured. This caused surprising knock-on effects for the entire mountain. Suddenly the adjacent Ropeway lines became obscene, so folks stayed in other parts of the mountain, causing lines in the Kitanomine Zone to also swell. All because one of the base access lifts, which I've never noticed to be that busy, failed. Since I am secretly employed by the FIA (Furano Intelligence Agency), over the summer I gathered raw intel from those in Lift Ops whenever I ran into them. The consistent response was positive and affirming that everything was proceeding nicely, and no major obstacles (or heaven forbid, new problems) had reared their ugly heads. This is significant, because if things are not going well, Japanese react very uncomfortably to these sorts of inquiries. Like visibly squirm, and then say something vague like, "It's a little difficult, but probably OK." So, imagine my surprise when it came to my attention that the Prince had not put out a press release regarding the 1 Quad status. You'd think they would have been all over that black eye, and totally be rushing to assure customers for the upcoming season. You'd think. But then you'd be wrong. So now they've released a typically Japanese vague statement that all should be OK by the normally scheduled start date in late December. Not exactly confidence-inspiring, but it's just how they express themselves. I'm relying on my agents in place and their positive reports. The Prince has every incentive to get this thing fixed, so if they don't, they are even more obtuse than I imagined. So, tune up the espresso machine, order your premium hot cocoa, do those balance drills, start working out, get the boards out and sharpen up the edges, watch a few ski vids, and otherwise get yourself ready to rock-n-roll "for healthy lifestyle." I'll be updating the snowfall here as it happens until the season opens (official date: Nov 30, Furano Zone only). Think snow. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Today is the last day of operations for the Yokoteyama Number 2 lift. From tomorrow, we'll be down to two lifts still open: Yokoteyama Number 4 pair lift: until late May Shibutoge pair lift: until 25th May The snow might be getting limited on those remaining few slopes, but there are still people keen to keep on going as long as possible. The Shibutoge lift should be open until next Sunday and Yokoteyama might be open beyond that. I'll post again when there's any further news to report. In other news, the section of Route 292 connecting Shiga Kogen with Kusatsu in Gunma will finally be able to full open from Thursday 22nd May. That's good to hear - it is about a full month later than planned (due to snow slide). The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Starting the last weekend with all the ski areas open; spring has really hit, and we're just watching the snow slowly retreat. Lots of good snow out there, though, and nice weather to enjoy it today. Sunny, pleasant temperatures and just some very light breezes. Tomorrow doesn't look so good, though, with rain, and maybe even a little snow late in the day, possible. I think you know when to go out.... About this season: It's been a strange one, to be honest. It looked like we'd lose most of our snow a couple of times throughout the season, with warm weather, wind and rain, but then the snow always seemed to come back. There was good powder out there, for sure; it just never seemed very 'Myoko-y' (meaning days of snow falling so heavy you can't see). Lots more international visitors this season, and they seemed to come from all over. Lots of Europeans - which surprised the locals - lots of Australians, of course, and no real troubles at all. Many people told me that they came here because they really wanted to visit Japan and enjoy the culture, not just ski (but they did want good deep snow, of course). Maybe that's why people were pretty respectful, friendly and nice. So a lot of change for us here, but not unpleasant change. We also had a lot more people getting into trouble by skiing where they shouldn't, and it wasn't all the imports doing it, either. Plenty of Japanese riding off course and into the wrong places. I hope more people learn that sidecountry really is backcountry, in that you can get killed in an avalanche just off the lifts as easily as way out in the hills. Trees are just as hard, too. Anyway, a kind of strange season, but a good one, and it's not completely over yet (see below). From this weekend the Myoko Kogen Sky Cable gondola and hotel No. 3 lift will stay open until May 6, or whenever the snow runs out. Spring rates from March 24 are adults ¥2,500, junior high students and seniors ¥2,000, kids ¥1,500. Akakura Onsen: 170cm Open until Sunday 30th March; no night skiing. Ikenotaira: 160cm Planning to stay open until Sunday 6th April. Myoko Suginohara: 160cm Back in the game until the 30th; gondola and No. 2 lifts operating. Seki Onsen: 390cm Says it hopes to stay open until mid-May—at least for Golden Week, snow allowing. Myoko Ski Park: 225cm Open until Sunday 6th April. Myoko Kyukamura Runrun 245cm Closing Monday, March 31. Madarao 170cm Tangram Ski Circus 155cm Running the No. 3 lift only from March 31 until April 6. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The good weather has mostly continued since the last update but we are getting rained on this morning in Myoko. It should hopefully be passing on quite quickly though with just cloud forecast late morning onwards. Still, we're expecting high temperatures of around 15C in town this afternoon. Tomorrow sun is forecast though maybe not quite as warm as today. Rain expected to be back by the end of Sunday and through Monday. Akakan and Seki still open as below. A good blast of snow overnight; not as much as it seemed we would get, as it was really coming down in the early evening yesterday, but still a good snowfall. 20cm clocked in the report. Some pretty strong wind as well, making all the trees white. Looks like we're in a birch forest this morning. Temperatures are staying nice and cold as well, and should stay that way through the weekend. Snow is on the forecast as well—it's occasionally sunny this morning, which it shouldn't be as we have clouds in all direction and a forecast of snow. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It was a scary sight last night, as a bit of precipitation began falling just as it got dark - and it wasn't snow. Luckily, that very light rain soon turned to snow, and we got perhaps 10cm of fresh stuff by morning. Hard to tell what it's going to do today. It's cloudy, and the forecast says we might indeed have some light rain tomorrow, as the freeze line moves way up the mountain. So far this year rain forecasts have resulted in snow, so let's hope for the white stuff, at least from the base of the resorts up. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . After a good day of snowfall, and some pretty strong winds, things quieted down this morning for a beautiful, sunny day and just great snow. Faithful readers will know I like it better when it's snowing, but today it's just perfect on the slopes: soft, sparkly snow, trees loaded with fresh white, a warm sun and a temperature staying in the minus. This could convince me that bluebird days are as good as many people say (of course, we will need more powder again soon....). The official snow reports are still all over the place; I think Akakura Onsen is the closest to reality with 30cm (I've complained to the town about late/incomplete reports; the ski areas are submitting and putting on their own websites, but it's nice to have them in one place. And early in the morning, too). The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A perfectly sunny day today, and a chance for visitors to finally see the mountain. Of course, snow doesn't magically appear on the hills (in other words, give me socked-in, full-blown snowfall anytime), but I'll agree it does look absolutely beautiful out there. The temperatures are still in the minus range, but the word from national TV this morning is for highs in the end-March range. It could be pretty warm out there later in the day. For the backcountry, that does set off some alarms. First as the snow melts and softens, and then again when the temperatures get cold and fresh snow falls on that melt layer. Keep an eye out and check out the snowpack carefully in the coming week, as things change. I am at home and late today, so all the snow reports are officially in today. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The fog of yesterday did turn to snow, with some pretty nice snowfall high up on the mountain. This morning the snow is falling in real Myoko style - it looks like a heavy drizzle and fog, but it's all snow. We haven't had so much accumulation yet, maybe 20cm at base, but if it keeps going at the same rate we could see a good coating of new fresh. An excellent day to be out skiing, which I intend to do. The nutty snow figures continue, with some areas reporting up to 40cm, others telling us nothing has fallen (or the level has even dropped). For the record I am logging my observed 20cm.
