There's a lot of cloud around, wandering around wondering what to do, but a bit of sunshine too... our heavy snow has not yet started up. We might get more today but our main heavy snow is due to really click in from later tomorrow and it should continue right into next week. Sounds good, right? Less great is wind which very well may be affecting some upper lifts this morning. Check before heading out. Top lifts on hold at the start of the day due to wind and it looks like limited visibility up there. ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base: -10℃, 30cm snowfall. Moiwa 800m: -14.4℃, data n/a, heavy snowfall, cornice and snowdrift development. Annupuri 1100m: -18.6℃, WNW6.6m/s, heavy snowfall, cornice and snowdrift development. Village 1000m: -15.2℃, WSW4.1m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -15.7℃, data n/a. Hanazono 800m: -13.6℃, NNE4.9m/s. Sea of Japan Benkei cape NW18m/s, Kamui cape WSW17m/s, 1001hPa, 1.7m waves. From midnight, a strong winter-type pressure pattern has developed, causing significant cornice and snowdrift development in the mountains, particularly on the west-facing slopes. Avalanche risk rapidly increases in Annupuri Oosawa, Kōzan-no-sawa, and the southeast face of Mikaeri. It’s better to stay in the resort today. Avalanche risk will similarly increase in the strictly off-limits area, such as Haru-no-taki, Yunosawa, and Anbetsu. Stay away. Here, the Niseko Rules urge caution against out-of-bounds skiing. Beyond the gates is not the ski area. Designating Anbetsu as a strictly off-limits area has drawn significant opposition, particularly from locals. Forty years ago, during Niseko’s first powder skiing boom, numerous avalanche accidents occurred. Fearing reputational damage, the ski resorts banned all out-of-bounds skiing, but accidents continued. Niseko became Japan’s most avalanche-prone mountain, and Japan’s first fatal snowboarder accident also occurred in Annupuri’s Osawa. The establishment of restricted areas under the Niseko Rules wasn’t simply because those areas were dangerous. Skiing out of bounds from resorts has been practiced for many years here in Niseko and has become part of Niseko’s culture. We ask for your understanding that the Niseko Rules were made out of necessity to preserve that culture, respect the freedom of out-of-bounds skiing, and simultaneously reduce accidents. If you voice complaints demanding freedom and continue ducking ropes, that freedom will only shrink further. The background to this latest designation of the Anbetsu restricted area mirrors that of 30 years ago. Do not cut ropes. A single careless rope-ducking track can trigger an accident. The weather will be bad for a while. Several cm of new snowfall this morning with cloudy skies but a kind of subdued sun trying to break through in places (not very successfully). But it's fairly bright. Kind of. I'm having one of those mornings when the right words aren't appearing in my head easily... The coming days is surely going to be bringing some significant snowfall but perhaps also some strong winds. I'm looking at you, tomorrow, in particular. It's going to be cold and potentially very stormy, so be prepared. Just having an extra piece of toast in the morning will not be enough! May I bring to your attention a few comments made by the Myoko Now reporter (from Niigata Prefecture) yesterday here. I have a few similarly themed comments brewing, but need a bit more time to put that together. Anyway, see you tomorrow. ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base 6am: -8℃, trace new snow. Moiwa 800m: -8.0℃, trace new snow. Coastal data: Benkei Cape WNW9m/s, Kamui Cape S7m/s, 1017hPa, 0.6m wave. There is little atmospheric pressure gradient, the sea and the mountains are calm. From observations and various data, the general avalanche risk is low. All peak gates are expected to be open. Please use the gates to go out of bounds. An increasing number of people are ignoring or disregarding the Rules and skiing in strictly off limits areas. For people new to the area -> the Forestry Agency and the Hokkaido Forestry Department do not officially allow off-piste skiing from ski resorts. They merely tolerate it. After many accidents, rather than completely banning out of bounds skiing in Niseko, the local government established Niseko Rules and the strictly off limits areas, to allow climbing and skiing from the peak. If users continue to disregard, criticize or violate the Rules, the areas where skiing is permitted will be further restricted, as in the case of the recent ban on entering Anbetsu. If you don’t want your ability to ski freely to be restricted, please follow the Rules. Beware of sudden changes in weather. There is no safety in the winter mountains. Today’s snow is amazing. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Not very nice days here in Myoko. It looked like a sunny day yesterday, but by afternoon it was rainy and cold and just not great; the snow - as much as there was at the base area—really started to collapse into wet slush. Today it’s just impenetrable fog with a little snow and a southwest wind. Very strange.... Oh, the rant. I often overhear people (particularly from a certain southern hemisphere nation) talking about going to “Iki”. Meaning, they think, Ikenotaira. OK, Iki might mean “go” or “breath” or “live” (lots of homonyms in Japanese), but “Ike,” pronounced ee-kay, is a pond, like the famous pond there in Ikenotaira. “Noz” for “Nozawa.” Then there was some TikTok guy talking up land purchases in Myoko, acting like an expert, but who couldn’t pronounce “Myoko.” It’s not my-o-ko, self-important dude. So what’s my rant? As the number of non-Japanese here grows, so is an increasing lack of respect for the local culture and language. A lot of the temporary residents don’t seem to care about the place they’re in, just about making money and scooting back home with it. It’s only going to get worse if the big project now being planned and slowly coming to reality really means lots of condominiums for largely non-present owners. I mean, a guide friend in Shinanomachi sent me news that access to the Okusha Shrine in Tokagushi—a nice winter hike— has been closed because large groups come in, wander up the tree-lined path to the shrine, and leave piles of garbage. Old local guy grumping? Absolutely, but I do hear the same thing from other newcomers who are a lot more interested and respectful of the people and culture here. I could go on, but you get the idea, and I know lots of readers have made a similar comment, too. Thanks for your respect, and love for snow country. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. Yesterday it was mild and we had southerly winds again, and that kind of wind in particular is not a friend to our snow. (And neither is the yellow sand thing. Things just feel a bit weird at the moment, but that might be me). This morning we have a 'hazy gas' as Tsugaike is calling it, giving us limited to poor visibility at many ski arears, but that should be clearing up fairly soon. Or so forecasts say, anyway. It might even get to be a clear and sunny day. A couple of cm of fresh snow in places around base areas. But right now what we really want and need is large helpings of fresh snow. That is still due to be starting around Tuesday with the main event around Thursday/Friday. I try not to get caught up in the headlines, but it might be significant snow - and that would be great. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 19cm Snowfall at base this season 491cm Good morning from Niseko. It is snowing again as I write this report. Once again the Avalanche Report has 40cm as it's new snowfall number. The most being reported by the ski areas is 30cm from Hirafu, with Annupuri and Hanazono both saying 10cm at base and Hanazono with 15cm at top. (Just to be clear, I'm not making any particular point here, just relaying the numbers that are out there). My own measurement of new snowfall as of 8am this morning is 19cm, taking my season to date number up to 491cm. It felt quite windy out there when I was having my pre-report walk, and snow was certainly being blown around. Still, all lifts appear to be opening as planned at the start of the day. I am happy to see regular snowfall on the forecast, too. That's all I got for you this morning. Moiwa 800m: -9℃, data n/a. Annupuri 1100m: -11.2℃, WNW10.4m/s. Village 1000m: -10.0℃, WNW5.6m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -10.6℃, WSW5.9m/s. Hanazono 800m: -7.8℃, NW9.4m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape NW15m/s, Kamui Cape W11m/s, 1016hPa, 2.7m wave. At 1000m, wind peaked overnight at 25m/s @ 2:00 AM. Although the wind was not particularly strong, there was heavy snowfall, with snowdrifts reaching 100-150cm in some areas. Cornices were slowly developing. Observations and data indicate a HIGH avalanche risk on open, leeward slopes above treeline. All peak gates will be closed. Please follow patrol instructions. Accidents at Haru no Taki continue. Yesterday, a successful rescue was conducted through a collaboration between the Hirafu Patrol, the Hokkaido Police Rescue Team and the fire department. Thank you. We are grateful to the Hokkaido Police Rescue Team for their daily deployments at Anbetsu, Furano Nishidake, and Haru no Taki yesterday. This string of accidents has left us all feeling helpless. It’s like playing whack-a-mole. But we cannot give up. At the Niseko Avalanche Research Center, we continue to compile daily information, hoping that one day accidents will stop. Overconfidence, lack of knowledge and understanding of this sport are what causes accidents. But as long as no one dies it’s OK. We hope that today will also be a safe day. Respect to the patrol. They play an important role in your safety at the ski resort.
