The mix includes light snow in places, a bit of sunshine in others with a lot of cloud around the mountain (and varying visibility depending on where you are). There's also more fresh snow for us to enjoy, and it doesn't feel windy but it does feel cold. All sounds good. Well, apart from the visibility thing, perhaps. Very sad to hear about the incident mentioned in the Avalanche Report below. There seem to have been few other similar incidents from other regions over the last week or so. Take care out there. ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base -8°C, 15cm snowfall, calm. Moiwa 800m -9.6°C, no data. Annupuri 1100m -11.5°C, W 3.7m/s. Village 1000m -10.3°C, WNW 3.0m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m -10.9°C, N 3.7m/s. Hanazono 800m -8.3°C, NNW 2.8m/s. Sea of Japan: Benkei Cape NW 9m/s, Kamui Cape WSW 11m/s, pressure 1017hPa, wave height 1.1m. Isobars are wide; conditions at sea and on the mountain are calm. Winds peaked at 4 AM at Westerly 15m/s, then trended below 10m/s. Analysis of all data indicates the overall avalanche risk is low. Gates are expected to open from the morning; follow the ski patrol instructions. The development of wind slabs is weak, but in some areas, overnight snowfall has formed soft slabs. On open steep slopes above 1000m, such as the upper Higashi-one (East Ridge), Back Bowl, and the cornice faces of Osawa, avoid riding simultaneously and do not cut under cornices or over knolls, as it could trigger an avalanche. The snow is shallower than yesterday but has reset and is not bad. Watch out for out-of-control riding and collisions with trees. Be alert for sudden weather changes. Yesterday afternoon, one person passed away on the Moiwa Mikaeri Ridge due to a medical emergency. Moiwa Patrol, police and fire department officers performed resuscitation measures at the scene, but they could not be recovered. We express our gratitude to those who assisted in the rescue, offer our deepest condolences to the family and friends, and pray for the soul of the deceased. I continue to write this report every day to prevent accidents, but at times, it feels hollow. Looks like it has been one of those days where more snow fallen to the north. Cortina is reporting 10-15cm 'near the mountain top', other ski areas not so much. It was snowing earlier on but has eased off now down here and we do expect some clearer skies, though the mountains still have a fair bit of cloud covering them. Wednesday and Thursday should bring us some clear skies from early on. It is also going to be milder. Let us hope not too mild. I have been enjoying the cold of late. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A little milder temperatures today; we’re supposed to get snow but the sun has just now decided to come out. There’s still a lot of snow hanging on the roofs and in the trees. Lots to plow away to make way for the next big snow (will it be tomorrow or not?). We've had a pretty high avalanche danger with lots of snow coming very quickly, but I’m pleased to see at the Japan Avalanche Network’s website that we no longer lead the country in risk (a number one I’m happy not to have). Give deep fresh snow a few days here and, thanks to the mild and consistent temperatures, it settles pretty well. Don’t get complacent, though, kids; travel with a friend, have all the gear (and knowledge). For me, I’m risking it all trying to get my roof to come down so the next fall doesn’t result in an avalanche onto the road! Not being that risky, really, just carefully carving away at the mounds of snow with the trusty Peter (snowthrower). Right now it is mostly cloudy with light snow falling in places but some hunt of blue sky in other areas (Annupuri). Varied weather depending on where you are. But it should be good everywhere. Hanazono 800m -8.3°C, WNW 4.9m/s. Sea of Japan: Benkei Cape NW 8m/s, Kamui Cape WNW 7m/s, pressure 1013hPa, wave height 1.0m. Isobars are wide and coastal wave heights are decreasing. Winds peaked last night at 8 PM at 20m/s in the western areas at 1000m, then hovered around 10m/s until morning. Observations indicate that new wind slabs are stabilizing over time. The overall avalanche risk is low. All peak gates are expected to open. Follow the ski patrol instructions. The area outside the gates is not a ski resort. Do not enter strictly prohibited areas based on your own selfish logic. You will lose your lift pass. As the number of guests surges, a “whack-a-mole” game continues between the ski patrol and trespassers. Respect the Niseko Rules for the safety of yourself and your companions. As Dr. Ukichiro Nakaya said, snow is a gift from heaven, and we receive its blessings. However, snow changes. When the wind blows, slabs develop and avalanche risk increases. Do not over-rely on pit checks. Consider the danger on the leeward side slopes during and just after a storm as common sense. Doing so will reduce accidents. Do you have your beacon? Do you have your probe, shovel, and short rope? Emergency food? Do you know where you are? There is no “safety” in this sport.
