It's not particularly cold this morning, but we do have another layer of fresh snow overnight. It may not be prime quality, but it is of course still welcome. (Always better than a rain alternative). The ski areas are reporting around 10-15cm of fresh, and it is actually snowing at a moderate rate as I am putting this report together. Visibility looks limited to poor on the mountain early on and while it feels quite windy, lifts seem to be planning on opening as normal this morning. Should be getting colder by later on today and into tomorrow. Hopefully more fresh snow, too! Hirafu Hanazono 1000m -4.9°C, N 2.4m/s, dense fog, 15cm snowfall. Hanazono 800m -2.7°C, NE 2.0m/s. Sea of Japan Benkei Cape NNW 15m/s. Kamui Cape WNW 7m/s, 1006hPa, 0.7m waves. Warm air flowed in with the passing low-pressure system, bringing up to 20cm of wet snowfall until dawn. After the system passed, the pressure gradient tightened at around 5:00 AM, bringing in cold air and winds of 15m/s to both the sea and the mountain. The mountain is experiencing dense fog due to the air mass replacement. The opening of the gates is TBD; follow the instructions of the ski patrol. Areas above 600m have been reset by wet snow. Heavy snow avalanches are likely to occur on steep slopes. Be careful, as you can become immobilized if buried. Cornices will largely fracture with even slight stimulation, triggering avalanches below. Do not jump off them. It can trigger a slide. Surveillance of strictly prohibited areas has been increased. Actually, I am writing this at my usual time, but I have heard that the report might not actually appear until around lunchtime due to some technical something or other this morning. (Note: information from 8:30am, images will be added from the time of posting). With all that out of the way, it looks like it will be a nice day today. The sun is out right now with a mix of cloud and blue sky. Still cold, but doesn't feel as cold this morning. Hopefully we might get some decent snow tomorrow, particularly as it looks like we are going to experience a mild patch around the coming weekend. Tomorrow is a national holiday in Japan, so the number of Japanese nationals in Niseko might double to around 10. Just kidding!!! ;) ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa Base -6°C, 10cm snowfall, calm. Moiwa 800m -7.2°C, WNW 7.2m/s, wind slab development subsided. Annupuri 1100m -9.8°C, WNW 8.5m/s. Niseko Village 1000m -8.5°C, WSW 4.7m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m -9.5°C, N 2.6m/s, 10cm snowfall. Hanazono 800m -6.6°C, ESE 2.1m/s. Sea of Japan Benkei Cape NW 11m/s. Kamui Cape WSW 6m/s, 1019hPa, 1.5m waves. The isobaric spacing has widened, and both sea and mountain are calm. Due to yesterday’s west winds, cornices and wind slabs have developed on the mountain. Impact tests show that the upper 30cm fractured, while the layers below are consolidated and stable for at least another 100cm. The overall avalanche risk is low. Gates are expected to open; follow the ski patrol instructions. Areas above 700m, including within the trees, have been reset by the wind. Watch out for tree collisions. This information is issued to prevent accidents outside the resort boundaries. Niseko respects the freedom of every rider, but that freedom comes with the responsibility to follow the rules. Avalanches are a natural phenomenon; if no people are present, no accident occurs. Never enter strictly prohibited areas. If habitual violations are ignored, an accident will inevitably occur. Beacons are not mandatory, but having one can save your or your companion’s life. Keep it switched on. Many dangers besides avalanches lurk in the mountains. Do not be overconfident and ski with consideration for others. Stay alert for sudden weather changes. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Morning from Shiga Kogen. It's a cold and snowy and quite windy morning. The wind is affecting some lifts around the region but most ski areas seem to be opening. Yakebitaiyama very early morning reporting 30cm. That was 6 hours ago. Okushiga Kogen was earlier reporting 40cm. With the wind blowing the light snow around it is one of those mornings where it is difficult to pin a number, but looking at my measuring points, I think todays report should be 40cm. There is probably more in places. Tomorrow should be calmer and clearer. We might get some clear skies. Want it or not, it keeps on falling with the ski area this morning reporting another 67cm since yesterday morning. I just noticed my season total is up to over 12m. And the ski area cumulative number up to 17.5m. I wonder how high it will get?! Lots of literal whiteouts on the slopes as tons of snow was falling while the winds blew snow out of the trees. Very exciting and a lot of fun (a good day to practice skiing by feel, not visual—don’t overthink it, right?). The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Snow clouds moved in yesterday after that fine start and we have fresh snow to play in this morning. Snowfall since yesterday ranking time: Tsugaike: 20cm Hakuba Cortina: 20cm Hakuba 47: 10-15cm Hakuba Goryu: 10cm Happo-one: 10cm (Riesen) It is a largely cloudy but wind is noticeable and it is affecting some lifts (you guessed it... at Happo-one). I really hope the new gondola they have planned will be more weather-resistant.
