Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata

New snowfall at base 7cm
Snowfall at base this season 20cm

Posted on Friday 18th December 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here.

The snow is falling—just not enough of it quite yet. Not a lot of accumulation following the 10cm or so that we had at the end of the day yesterday; this morning it's falling very lightly, but things are also turning a bit bright out there. Myoko-san (the mountain) has just peeked out as the sky clears. The peak is beautifully white, but unfortunately there just hasn't been enough to even think about opening the ski areas (see the original plans below; now all areas are saying, "when the snow falls...").

If you're here in town early, and I know people have been coming earlier and earlier from overseas, despite warnings from locals, there's always some fishing over on Lake Nojiri, strolls around town—it does look great here in the snow, so head out to Naena Waterfall or something!

All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Myoko. The 'new snowfall' number represents the amount of snow measured since the previous report. All opinions are those of the individual reporters. Information regarding ski area operations is manually checked every morning and is believed to be correct at the time of the report.
