I've been using the mailwasher pro software the last few months, and while it does make it easier and quicker to delete spam mail, there doesn't seem to be much of a decrease in volume of junk - even though I blacklist all junk and set it to bounce.

 

Maybe I'm doing something wrong or missing something......

I haven't found any particular advantage to using it either. You can either delete the mail at Mailwasher, or delete it in your mail program - same difference.

 

I heard that one reason maybe it doesn't work is that it isn't properly bouncing the mail - it actually goes back through your ISP. Anyway, the people who send the spam probably don't bother updating their lists much. What does it matter to them if half the addresses on the list are duds?

 

The program should actively delete blacklisted mail, but it doesn't even seem able to do that.

Not the same difference here. I am on ADSL, but deleting the mails without having to download them all does make a difference. It is also helpful that the mails are flagged.

 

In the BLACKLIST, OPTIONS part there is an option to "Auto-delete blacklisted messages". Perhaps this is what I should be doing. Some great big warning message appears when you first click on that and it put me off.

 

I think I'll give it a try.

It works for me. Have it set so that Blacklisted mails get deleted automatically.

 

The big problem though is that lots of the spammers don't send from the same address twice (or so it seems), so there are always endless new addresses being sent from. Its a complete pain in the bottom.

I have the auto blacklist delete running also I have the fiters running heavily, I have a squillion filters running

eg

"If the Body contains "increase the size of your penis" then add the sender to the blacklist, don't display the email in the messages list, mark the message as mail to be deleted and mark the message as mail to be bounced."

 

or

If the Subject field contains "penis" or "join us" or "anal" or "y o u n g g i r l s" or "anall" or the Body contains "penis enlargement" or "rock hard erection" or the Subject field contains "viagra" then add the sender to the blacklist, don't display the email in the messages list, mark the message as mail to be deleted and mark the message as mail to be bounced.

 

etc etc etc

 

Filters on the senders, headers, subjects, from, and importantly the body. All the common words that spammers have.

 

 

If junk mail gets through I look at it and add another filter to get it next time.

You have to be careful though with filtering the body of the message. Dont filter single words rather filter phrases the spammers commonly use

like " consolidate your bills"

or "increase the size of your manhood" etc

 

otherwise all you emails will be deleted if your filter single dirty words

Man I used to get so much junk mail it was ridiculous. After having an email address with an ISP for 5 years I was getting upwards of 30-50 spam messages a day. I got so fed up I bought my own domain. I am now ultra selective about what address I fill in on web forms, give out, etc. 2 years later I now go months without getting a single piece of spam. Ahhhhh, very nice.

 

...and don't even think about signing me up for any spam lists you comedians out there.

I'm using that. There is a setting where you can make it delete all blacklisted mails, but as the man said lots of these spam people seem to just change the addresses they use all the time so actually not that many get deleted. Filters are the other thing you can do

I was playing with filters yesterday after Kamo's suggestion.

 

Do you need to make one filter for every word and for every phrase, or is it possible to delimit them with colons or something?
