So it looks as though dressing up in nighties and holding laughably theatrical ceremonies aside, the Grecians don't seem to be very good at organizing Olympic games any more. The lazy bastards are holding the whole world hostile by going on strike for more money instead of building the stadiums. They should be bombed back into line. Actually, I hope that it turns into such a fiasco that the whole thing shrivels up and dies. I find the whole thing utterly tiresome because it is thrust down one's throat for years in advance. Hitler's advisers recommended that he not hold the Berlin Olympics because of the internationalism behind the 'movement'. However Hitler recognized that the nationalistic aspects of the Olympics was far stronger, and every event since then has been marked with his stamp. Only half the venues have been completed, the roof over the swimmimg pool wont be built so it will be ala Barcelona with an outdoor pool! in the searing sun! The main stadium is a long way from being finished A planned rail link that was to have been built has been abandoned. etc etc etc How did these bumbling idiots ever get the the Olympics? its disgraceful. They were awarded the games in 1997 and they didnt even get started on planning, construction until 2000! In the future it seems only organised wealthy countries will be given the games. ATHENS OLYMPIC SPORTS COMPLEX Olympic Stadium The deadline for the Olympic Stadium roof has been put back The 16,000 ton, £80m glass-and-steel dome over the main Olympic stadium, designed by the internationally renowned Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, remains a serious doubt as time runs out for such an ambitious project. It is due to be put in place on April 14. The athletics track has yet to be laid and officials admit it will not be completed before July 20 - three weeks before the opening ceremony. Aquatic Centre This has been one of the most controversial venues. Following an argument over whether to build a roof over the pool it was decided that a plastic-coated tarpaulin would be hung over the arena as a permanent structure could not be made in time, but even that has now been scrapped. For the first time since Barcelona in 1992 the swimming events will take place out of doors. Tennis Centre The main court, with 11,000 seats, and two semi-final courts are still being repaired, with completion put back until 30 March. Velodrome The completion date for the 3,500-seater track cycling venue has been moved back to 30 June. Indoor Hall The basketball and gymnastics venue is another that is some way from being ready, with 30 April the latest date. 2. HELLINIKO OLYMPIC COMPLEX The Ministry of Environment, Public Welfare and Public Works expects to have completed the centre for fencing, handball and basketball preliminaries by 31 May. 3. MARATHON ROUTE The repaving of the route is not completed and was given to a new contractor on 10 March, with a scheduled finish date of 15 June. Greece's newly elected government has decided to cut back on landscaping to speed up the project, which follows part of the original route run by the messenger Phidippides in 490 BC. 4. KARASKAIKI STADIUM The dramatic progress made at one of the four Olympic football stadiums should be of some comfort, as a windswept car park has been converted into a half-built arena in under six months. However, the project still faces a race to be finished by the proposed date of 30 June. 5. OLYMPIC VILLAGE The official "Athletes First" policy of the Games looks to have been taken on board, and the competitors' accommodation came through a major trial as long ago as last October. Housing for an estimated 20,000 media representatives has yet to be finished. 6. SCHINIAS ROWING/CANOEING CENTRE Building work may be on schedule but the event itself suffered a major embarrassment during last year's test event when the level of preparation was called into question, as high winds caused several boats to sink. 7. TRANSPORT Greek Transport Minister Michalis Liapis described projected completion dates for key transport works as "borderline" in early March. Part of a planned suburban railway has been scrapped and the tram line that will link the centre with seaside Olympic venues, including those for sailing, taekwondo and beach volleyball, remains well behind schedule. Everyone comes, has a good time, some great parties, and Australia knows how to put on an Olympics AND have a good BBQ, proven track record!
