Went from Maizuru to Otaru which was overnight and took 20 hours. Cheap and bearable, but only just. Get a bed not a shared tatami room. Though Aomori to Hokkaido probably won`t take long at all and shouldn`t be hit too bad by rough seas.

Stepchild, if any ferry available from Niigata, maybe it's the best way for you, I guess.

Don't think it easy to go across the Tsugaru Straits, that is the hardest straits in Japan.

The weather is a lot often rough there. Easily get sea sick.

 

Hey Sakebomb, when you go to Aomori across the Tsugaru Straits by ferry, how it goes? Always calm or often rough?
